I found the following info on an official site about the safety of ceramic fiber:
---
The fibres themselves can irritate the skin, eyes and upper respiratory tract but the main concern is that the individual fibres are small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs and possibly lead to the development of lung cancer and mesothelioma.
---
But even if it was 100% not a possible cancer risk, you really don't want any kind of fibers getting into your lungs. COPD is horrible, and can be caused by virtually anything getting stuck in your lungs, especially with repeated exposure. Also, there is more to why people are upset that what may happen from whatever fiber was used. This is not a single issue problem. That has been explained many times in here already. There are definitely people over reacting, and people underreacting to the situation, as well as people who are just focused on facts without much emotional drive.
I have never owned one, so for my own sake, I'm not nearly as upset as anyone would understandably be if they had been using it. But since I generally care about the well being of others on this planet, I'm empathetically upset for them. I was also assuming that I was going to buy the new Ariolite if people on FC mostly thought it was good enough. Now I have to hold off because people raved about the AE, yet didn't know about this potential issue, and people do have valid cause to not blindly trust the company.
If we assume that the material was 100% safe, and therefore there is no cause for concern, YLL still handled this whole thing terribly. If there was nothing to be concerned about, they could have made some sort of public statement with data and links to 3rd party sources that back up that position. But to the best of my knowledge, that has never happened. I would also think that it would be odd to offer replacements if there was nothing wrong in the first place.
