can you get ethanol? pretty much the same thing. you can order it online im sure. just make sure not to get "denatured" ethanol.

i would think if you can't get grain alcohol that you could get grape alcohol, good luck

I think the white buildup is more likely plant waxes and terpenes (spelling?). Hence why you are less likely to see it on an abv run... The freshest herb puts off strait white looking residue that when dried I have seen it look like soap crumbles.

I use ec to collect wand hash from all my gear. Now I usually use butane for flower extractions.

I've heard of people leaving there plant matter sit in the EC for either a week or two in a closed container, mainly to make tinctures. Would this be an effective method or maybe just overkill? There would be little agitation and it would be to sit in a cool dark place for a week or so, Then evaporated.

The idea would to be to use this in a tincture. Does this sound right ?

yes you have the basics down for tinctures, look around for 'green dragon' for more info.

for tinctures remember you'll want to decarb the plant matter first, same as edibles...

i then said fuck it and put both the 1st and 2nd run into my funnel and melted them into my Omi cart. it loaded beautifully. i am however worried that this oil is too thick for an Omi cart tho because im not getting very big rips. they are pretty light and it took FOREVER to prime. on top of not working well in the Omi cart it tastes horrible... worse than the ISO taste. i think i will stop with the EC and just use ISO from now on. i dont like the idea of doing butane runs and my backyard is very small (in the city) so its not easy for me to do the runs outside. so id rather stay away from butane, but EC and ISO make the oil taste funny (ISO is better than EC IMO).

so now im back to looking for a dif way to make oil. i guess ISO will have to do for now. i would love to hear if others have done any EC extractions.

2Clicker first of all you should probably not be vaping, combusting, inhaling any oil made with a grain alcohol.

which is basically any form of alcohol you can drink. my thought is grain alcohol is a sugar and you shouldn't inhaling that. that's not smart.

Iso is probably safe, as long as you use a high percentage alcohol such as 91% and properly purge it.
make sure the only other ingredient in your Iso is water. because that's safe not sugar.

just my opinion..

Regardless of your extraction PURGING is a very important step!

I use the 2.4 OMICRON carts with Concentrates I make myself.

I have used EVERCLEAR and i found some 99% ISO.

PURGE-PURGE-PURGE regardless your method of extraction.

HEAT-VACUUM-HEAT-VACUUM

If it has any off flavor after then buy it or purge it again!

There's no sugar in Everclear (or any 190 proof grain alcohol). There's 95% ethyl alcohol and 5% water. That's it.

thanks for the concern my friend, but as haywood has stated EC extractions are safe. after distillation of 95% grain alcohol there are zero sugars left behind. other lower proof/% alcohols like vodka or something else would be a bad idea for that reason.

i have since gone back to using EC exclusively. it MUCH better than iso flavor-wise IMO.

EC is fine. It's that 150 rum you can't use...you will end up with a sticky mess of sugar :puke:

I don't think we can get EC in Ontario...so I stick to 99% Iso. I find the best way to get flavour out of ISO, is to let it air dry.

For the particularly determined and adventurous, perhaps home distillation of lesser proof alcohols would be an option?

I don't know anything about such a process, just blue skying here…

Hey if that's the ingredients and you like it do it your way. I just was hesitant and thought I'd discuss it with the most dedicated group I know.

Perfectly acceptable and totally encouraged. So you admit you were wrong about everclear though? I just want to clear it up. I've heard there are sugars or starches, and I think even greywolf said that. Everyone else insists its sugar free, but I really respect greywolf, so I'd like to know for sure. I basically just want to minimize the risks, hope dispensaries that open next year have CO2 oil, and buy that like its going out of style since I don't have to worry about contaminants. I don't care if I like BHO or everclear better, I'd still take the Co2 just for peace of mind I think.

My friend just got a nail setup and loved the everclear run I did on some trim for him. I don't have a nail setup, only the cera EO and the cera body is with thermovape right now, so I haven't gotten a good sample of my everclear oil yet, only melting it onto bowls in my underdog. Works great, but not an efficient use of oil IMO, so just waiting.

Take some everclear and evap it. You will see right off the bat if there are sugars.

Anyone who says ISO tastes bad, is doing it wrong.

Personally I leave it with no fan or no heat until the liquid is basically gone. In a closed drawer with no airflow this takes almost 2 weeks. I know I could speed this up with heat or air, but I don't feel safe doing that yet. Is it safe to put a pyrex full of EC on an electric griddle at 200 degrees? I have no idea. Plus I have to use that inside, so I wait until almost all liquid is gone to be safe, since the last of the liquid is always water.

I need to do more experiements with EC, but the thing is I haven't had the best results so far. The trim run I did was very very dark and so incredibly harsh that I just want to clean my cera cart of it and waste it all. Maybe I'll save all the trim for topical use if I can't make it smoother.

The thing that bugs me is that skunkpharm says to soak it for up to 3 minutes. They know their shit and their results are perfect. Yet after a 2 minute soak I'm getting dark green or even black results. I know I can fix this with a faster soak, but how can they soak longer and still get great results? I will try a very fast wash on a small amount of prime buds next, but I know that will mean lower yields for sure.

I made some Rick Simpson Oil with everclear and the absolute best organic buds my friend grew for me. Sensi Star. Very strong indica effects. I'm too scared to take the RSO though, because I don't do well with edibles and it seems like people only measure it in "rice size" for dosage. I can't figure out how much BY WEIGHT to start with as a baby dose. I'm so terrified of it because I don't want a 12+ hour edible style freakout. I don't have time for that and its very unpleasant. I had a capsule with .03g of the RSO in it, and I didn't even take that because I was scared even that much would be too much to tolerate. I really need someone else who is more adventurous to try it and see what amount is where ANY noticeable effects start. My scale doesn't seem to register anything lower than .03 so I'm thinking of eyeballing about half of the .03g and starting there, increasing by .03 until I feel effects. I really REALLY don't want to overdo it. Hopefully someone else doesn't mind doing a long everclear soak and trying it out. Ideally someone with way less anxiety.

OK, I have a bout 1/4 of nice shake and I'd like to make some oil. I am not going to try butane. I tried it once and didn't like the experience. It was smelly and I got practically nothing in return. Anyway, I have this in the freezer now. I was thinking of going to get some Everclear, but I also have 91% ISO here.

What do you suggest for this first time run?

Tstat,

Great Scott!
I suggest everclear over iso. Just personal preference, but I feel like residual everclear is probably safer than residual iso.

I used 7 grams of PRIME bud, and got exactly 1.01g of Rick Simpson Oil. I let that soak for a much longer time than if I were making something to vape, so I'd imagine I'd get less than a gram if I did a quick soak on a 1/4 of excellent buds :/ Not the best return. I'm sure it will be even less with trim.

Gotta pay to play I guess.

I'd say soak it for 45sec to 1 minute tops if using everclear. Like 15 sec with iso. Save the trim from the quick everclear wash, then do a long everclear soak to make some RSO. You'll get a small amount of everclear hash, and whatever is left in the trim still will not be wasted since you will get RSO from the rest. No need to be quick with RSO because the plant matter is doing no harm that way.

OK, thanks. I have the ISO in the freezer, so I think I'll try that first and see what I get. If it comes out OK, I'll try Everclear next week!

Update:

Well I did it. I let the shake and ISo freeze for a few hours. Then I pored ISO over the shake and shook it up a little for 20 seconds. I then filtered it through a wire strainer and now it's filtering through the coffee filter. This part is taking forever! Even when I shake it around, I can't get more than a drip at a time to come out. In the pyrex bowl, I can see trichs, so I guess I'll get something. Doesn't look like much. I put everything back in the freezer, so I guess I could run it again later tonight.

Never looks like much. Usually isn't to be honest. I did a LONG soak to make the RSO and still got only 1.01g from 7g of top buds.

Next time I get trim I'm going to try bubble hash to see if I can get a bigger yeild, but I need at LEAST 2 oz of trim to use my 5 gallon bubble bags I'm sure. If I'm not thrilled with that, then I'll save trim for topical use. I'm determined to find some good use for it.

Well, we have a lot of experience with bubble. My first suggestion is to invest in the real Bubble Bags, if you dont already have them. It makes a huge difference. We have so much trim that I might invest in one of those washing machines.

To make good bubble, go slow. Don't beat the crap out of your material. Let is sit for a while after agitating and use as many micron bags as you can afford. Also, we don't use fan leaves and try to leave all small buds for hash production.

The last shit my son made was from Vortex trim. It was so good that you can dab it and leaves nothing behind!

I personally love bubble, but after trying real BHO from a dispensary, we really want to make more "honey oil" type stuff.

Do they have CO2 oil there? You should try that out. I've never had it, but I'm a HUGE fan....on paper.
