Elium is in early Alpha stage and is currently taking questions from the vaporizer enthusiasts like yourself. We did a Q&A on reddit 17 days ago where we answered lots of questions. I wanted to do one here at the same time but the one on reddit blew up so much I eventually had to close it down because I could no longer keep up with the question and get my daily work done. But I have a bit of time to do this again so I figured I would start a new thread here. Below are the stats that I gave to reddit as well as a list of potential changes we are going to make based on the reddit Q&A.

Here is the link to the reddit thread in case anyone wants to read through the questions before asking any here. https://www.reddit.com/r/vaporents/comments/8k70ed/new_dosage_controlled_vaporizer_elium_vapor_ask/

Here are the Stats I gave to them, and the changes I am going to employ already.

Specs

Size: Vaporizer is a bit larger than most weighing 285 grams. Still lighter than the Ghost MV1. Similar in size to the Mighty. But you will understand once you read the list of features.

Dosage Control: It electronically injects your extracts into the oven using a medical grade linear actuator. The dosage is in (EDIT: I made a mistake here and said 1.75 mg. I meant to say 1.25mg. However, keep in mind we are in beta and if we realize there is no need for such a small dosage this might change. 1.25 provides barely any vapor at all.) 1.25mg increments up to 5mg total injection at one time.

Cartridges/Oven Inserts: Cartridges(Oven Insert) for extracts can be filled by the user and will be available prefilled by dispensaries in Colorado starting end of the year. It holds up to .5 depending on the density of oil. Cartridges(Oven Insert) for dry herbs hold .3 similar to other vapes on the market.

Cartridges come in Glass, Ceramic or Stainless Steel. Depending on preference.

Battery Specs: Battery is a removable 18650 custom battery pack. It is removable, can be charged in the device or outside of the device but it is not compatible with other devices nor are standard 18650s with Elium. Our battery has a large protection circuit board to prevent battery failure in extreme conditions.

Currently, battery life is about average right now 45-60 minutes of continuous use. Averaging about 4-5 sessions but we are looking to increase that before launch.

Heat Up Time: Heat up time for extracts ranges from 20-45 seconds depending on a viscosity of oil and amount of preheating required for the motor to inject. (Motor will detect when it is ready so you don't have to) Heat up time for dry herbs is about 35 seconds.

Cleaning: All components that make contact with vapor or extracts/herbs is removable for cleaning. In fact, there is a separate oven insert for extracts and dry herbs. The vaporizer has a removable vapor path which is made up of two ceramic plates wedged together. The plates have an etched path that increases the travel distance and helps catch particulate. Elium also has a spare slot to keep an extra oven insert so you can carry both dry herb and extract or two of either.

Housing Material: Housing is made from Aluminium Alloy and comes in 5 styles. Plain aluminum, Blue, Orange, Green, and Black.

Target Price: The current price we are aiming for is $349.00 US. But we will be doing a presale offering a $100 discount. Depending on how progress goes from here this may also change.

Changes being made already:

  1. The Battery: Of course the biggest concern with vaporizers these days seems to relate to the battery, or better yet the ability to remove the battery. The battery we are going to use in the device is the LG 18650 HE4 . We originally went with a custom battery pack which required us to put the protection circuit directly on the battery. While for testing we are still connecting the protection circuit directly to the battery and then wiring the battery straight to the main PCB, (this is just much safer when we are running tests with both the heater and the motor that drives our injection system) we hope through more testing we may be able to make it completely removable. *Fingers crossed. Please understand, however, that we value your safety over your ability to use the batteries you currently have. There are still too many variables (such as batteries that have been damaged or fake imitation batteries) which may affect not only the safety of the device but also the performance for us to say right now whether or not this dream will become a reality. Our device draws 20 amps of power when heating up and not many other devices on the market do that with a removable battery so the tech is almost completely new. Especially in a situation where more than a few hundred devices will be made.

  2. Housing Material: The next largest concern we registered was in relation to our Aluminum housing especially in regard to the mouthpiece. Since our last conversation I have done some heavy testing to the device and would have to agree that while the mouthpiece doesn't get hotter than other devices on the market the vapor does get hotter or dryer as the housing heats up. Also, people did not like the idea of lips on aluminum. This is something we are going to fix right away. We are already redesigning the mouthpiece so that it has less moving parts or points of failure. But we are now also looking into other material types for the outer skin of the mouthpiece or even the whole device. The best option we are looking into right now is Peek Plastic, which other high end vapes are made from, we would still, however, make the actual vapor path out of ceramic (Silicon Carbide a very strong ceramic), Stainless steel or glass. Let me know if you have any other ideas for the housing material. In regard to the rest of the housing, we are looking at Magnesium Alloy on the high end (Cost wise) or Peek Plastic on the lower* end. I personally never wanted a fully plastic device but I am open to suggestion none the less.

  3. Shape and Weight of Device: While our device is not the largest or smallest. We also want to take into consideration what shape people expect. One thing to clarify is that the Ovens for dry herbs and extracts are removable. Meaning you can fill your dry herb oven outside of the device. But the key thing to remember here is that we do not want the device to be a rectangle brick like so many other devices on the market. But we are working on removing some of the weight by changing some of our materials, this includes getting rid of some of the metal or switching it for a lighter version. We haven't come up with a solid plan for changing the shape so I wanted to clarify with all of you what shape you prefer in a portable vaporizer?

  4. Dry Herb oven size: A lot of people wanted to have the options of a "half packed" oven. We have decided to work on our dry herb oven design and I am happy to say that it is not going to be a problem for us to make multiple different sized ovens. This will give you even more control with dosage as now not only can you control your dosage with extracts down to teeny tiny amount but you will also be able to do the same with the dry herb chamber. *More details about this coming soon but this will come standard with the device on release.

  5. The last thing we are thinking of doing is giving the user more control over your dose sizes. Right now we are working on 4 presets and from your feedback, those may all be a bit too small for the average user. Therefore we are going to work on a way for you to adjust these to whatever you want (within reason, the oil still has to fit into the oven chamber and not clog it). This will either be done through the device itself or through a Smart Phone App. We wanted to avoid creating an app at all costs but if it was just to allow the customer to fine tune or "mod" the device to their wants it may be worth looking into. Of course, we will never allow the app to be connected to the internet except when updating or for it to transfer any information about your vaporizer usage to a central server.
These are the major things we can and will be working on. The battery is the only thing that is still tentative based on testing. In regards to our website, we are going to be making a lot of changes to the device so we wanted to wait to release the final version of it until we are closer to knowing what the final product is going to be. We will be launching a landing page giving you the chance to sign up to our newsletter and also reserve your chance to be one of the first to test the device when it is ready. If there is one major thing I have taken away from our reddit Q&A it is to not rush our product just to get it released and start making money. I am in this to do it right, not just to do it. Feel free to ask any questions, give any feedback and I hope that I can answer them as thoroughly as possible.

Print this in 1 foot high red letters over the door to your company...on the inside so you see it every time you step out.

Another way to say it is measure twice so you only have to cut once.

It has been a bit since I updated so I wanted to share some of the things we have been up to.

1. We finally moved into a real office so that we are now all working face to face all day. This has speed up innovation. We will be expanding into an actual production size warehouse very soon. This will allow us to Assemble and test our first run products in house until we can trust a manufacturer with this step. (Possibly we will keep this process in house forever. We will have to see as we grow but will remain transparent throughout the process)
2. We are testing out some alternative housing materials such as PEEK plastic and a seeing if we can achieve a better external temp with less insulation. This may help us to reduce the size. We also removed most of the rubber along the side of the device and will be adding some texture instead to make it easier to grip. Again to remove some of the size of the device.
3. After testing several "off the shelf" heating elements which are only slightly customized. (Similar to a lot of production vapes) We are now working on a new in house heater that is more powerful, and more efficient on battery life. We are getting close to something that will beat the reliability of anything else out there.
4. We are working to make the mouthpiece more simple. Less parts = less failure and less cost to you. This is a process that requires us to try several new options all at one time until we find one that has the desired result as its hard to determine how each user will attempt to open and shut the device.

Let us know what you would like to hear about regarding the progress and also feel free to ask any technical questions about what you already know about the device.

We are in the process of making a 3d animated video to illustrate the inner workings of Elium. This should help with showing how the oven inserts work, how the heating system works as well as the dosage injection. I hope to have this done asap.

Big update for Elium! Sorry for taking so long to get this up, between fundraising, development and other start up related hurdles I have not had the time needed to make these updates public.

Check out our new website with lots of great info about the vaporizer and our story so far. Elium Vapor

We have updated the design of Elium a lot since you all last saw it.
  1. We have moved the buttons to the front of the device. We also added a third button to make menu navigation much easier and intuitive.
  2. We have increased screen size to show more data (Battery life etc)
  3. We have improved our heater and moved it below the oven chamber to increase convection heating (Still hybrid Convection/Conduction) and also to moved it further away from the extract cartridge (I use the term cartridge but this is more like a syringe with a right angle nozzle to dispense extracts from liquid to semi liquid extracts directly into the oven one hit at a time)
  4. We improved dosage sizes now boasting 4 different dose sizes for extracts from small to very large.
  5. Improved magnetic mouthpiece to improve durability and ease of use. Also made it much easier to clean. (Final version will have a Zirconia Ceramic Mouthpiece which is essentially a very durable chemically inert ceramic)
  6. Improved battery life, we are working hard to make the removable battery pack before launch. Lots of resources going to this right now. We have increased battery capacity to 3500mAh already however, we are looking into a 5000mAh battery but so far we see some safety issues with our current discharge rate on these cells. the 5k mah battery may be a version 2 update. But we will be doing a lot more research here before release and I will keep you updated on progress.
  7. Decreased overall size. The device is roughly 12% smaller than it was before making it fit more hand sizes and also fit pockets better.
  8. Device has switched to USB type C fast charging. It is also now located on the bottom of the device vs the back so the device lays flat when charging. It also has a dust cover.
  9. Improved herb basket which is easier to remove, easier to fill and easier to clean.
  10. We are about to start a new equity crowdfunding round to raise funds to make additional updates to firmware (faster heat up and calibrate temp on screen to match oven rather than heater), Hardware, and build 100 Beta units 50 of which will go to UL, CE and FAA testing facilities to get our device certified the other 50 which will go to Beta testers all over the world and for us to bring to events for you all to have a chance to try it in person. The remaining funds will go towards finalizing manufacturing tooling for injection molding and packaging. We will then raise the additional money needed to build the first lot of units that will be sold and shipped.
  11. Created a video showcasing extract usage (I made this one a while back, sorry for not sharing here sooner) Link to Video
  12. I am currently filming and editing the dry herb function video and hope to have it up this week. Will come back and share the link when it is ready.
  13. Increased our engineering team size to include manufacturing specialists to simplify the device assembly process further and bring manufacturing costs down as low as possible.
Thank you all for your continued support, I have joined the vaporents discord to be easier to reach with questions but will try to start checking in here more frequently as well.

So, after to gave a look at your website, can I assume the bowl is a stainless steel bucket? is the concentrate directly injected in that bucket or is there a sort of insert which will fits the bowl/bucket?
Is there any convection heat involved for concentrates vaping?
Is there 2 differents modes to vape flowers and/or concentrates? I think not
Can I use simultineaously flower insert and wax AED system?
Leaks-proof?

Sorry for all that questions but your product wake up my interest!

  1. There will be several inserts available for extracts one that fits directly into the oven and one that fits into the bucket. The one that will fit into the oven is a glass honeycomb (We are still perfecting this) The one that fits into the bucket is a stainless mesh. However you can also inject directly onto the screen in the oven chamber (I really enjoy this as it hits hard like a dab). The entire oven/heater/ air path is isolated water/air tight and can be cleaned. The oven, heater and the heater sleeve are all made from surgical grade 316 stainless steel. It also has a clean setting like a conventional oven that allows for a short burst at max temp to burn out any remaining extracts if you are not able to clean with q tip and alcohol.
  2. The heater provides hybrid convection/conduction heat to both extracts and herbs. But with the insert in place you get more convection than without it.
  3. There are two different settings when you turn the vape on. One for extracts and one for herbs. The one for extracts will allow higher temps than the one for herbs. You can pack herbs into the oven and then inject oil on top though so completely possible to use both simultaneously for a sort of supercharged hit ;)
  4. The oil injection cartridge can be tucked away when not in use making it leak proof. It also injects at a right angle to help prevent the device from just dripping oil when not intended to to so. (I try to address this in the video but will post more clear video to showcase this)
I am here to answer everyone's questions so do not feel bad for anything you ask :)

Interesting! Must have missed this before

Let me know if you have any questions. I will be doing my best to post some additional videos leading up to the Beta test phase. At that point I will do my best to let as many people try the device in person as possible before we sell anything.

It was said in the OP to be 349$ but there will be a 100$ discount for early pre-order... although maybe they changed it...

What is your suggested retail going to be?

While we are still finalizing our manufacturing costs we are still aiming for $300-350 price range. There will also be a discount for early supporters of $100 as mentioned above by PPN. Prior to that there will be a Beta launch of about 50 units to get the device in the hands of reviewers and also have enough devices to bring on the road to various events for people to try before we start actually selling product.

I’m really looking forward to videos!

Any chance you can enhance your website, maybe with some gif’s that demonstrate how the basket fits in the device and/or loading flower and extracts?

Thanks!!!

I will be adding the videos to the site for sure. I address the loading of the basket and extract in upcoming videos. I try to make some time very soon to render gifs of these points as well to add to the site.

Dry Herb video is live. In this I address some of the questions you all have, including how the basket is filled and loaded, how the extract cartridge is loaded, How you could use them both together and how the dry herb vaping mode functions .Dry Herb Demo Video

I read about the possibility to dose concentrates to the milligram but I don’t get how it is possible, since the ovens for both waxes and herb seem pretty large to me.

Watch the extract video
While we understand that perfect dosing is not possible due to density variances between oils/strains etc. the vaporizer is capable of delivering the same amount each time you inject. Oven size doesn't matter as the injection amount is controlled by our actuator not the oven/user. In the video you see me inject a mid sized dose. We have 4 different dose sizes from much smaller to much larger than that.

Oven holds about .1 to .25 of dry herb. We will be adding a honeycomb glass insert for extracts and a half pack herb basket closer to release. Will update once those are ready for video.

I am yet to see a device that excels at both concentrates and dry herb. A liquid pad type setup is never as a bucket for concentrates. Likewise a conduction bucket is not as good as convection for dry herb. A jack of both trades might not excel at either.

I would like to be proven wrong.

We have spent an equal amount of time developing both. The device can utilize a dish, a concentrate pad or be ran open with just a screen between the heater and concentrates. We changed our entire heating system more than once to land on one that works well for both. I agree that this will not be a easy feat to master as devices tend to focus on one aspect and then add the other as an after thought. Currently we are working on a glass honeycomb to get more convection to the extracts and I will keep you updated on the progress. Dry herbs get a good mixture of convection/conduction which is what I have always preferred. I am pretty happy with the way the device is performing with both currently and know that it will only improve from here. Flavor is the #1 factor for me. Hope that we can be the device that successfully accomplishes this. I can't wait to get to Beta and have you all try it out for yourselves to be the true judges. There is no doubt that no device is perfect for everyone and I would be wrong to think that ours will be.
