Easy ABV Coconut Oil Recipe(Crockpot)

lol.. No offense taken. There are a gazillion ways to do things and there is no one answer, just like with most cooking - a ton of diff techniques/recipes for similar dishes.

I use the mason jar as I'm generally working with smaller amounts (1-2 oz of ABV). Crock pots range in size but generally in the several quarts and up range (mine is 8 quarts). The jar keeps what I'm cooking contained to a smaller area which is all that is needed for these smaller amounts... it also makes for less loss as it's easier to empty a small jar than it is to empty the large surface area of my crock. Easier clean up as well.

For straining... I've mentioned many times I don't like to use cheesecloth as it eats some of the product. I have used in the past but have completely switched to strainers that aren't absorbent so....less loss of product. I use 2 very fine stainless mesh strainers for larger amounts and for smaller batches I use a nylon tea strainer basket. Both work very well and don't absorb any of the liquid.

These are the types of strainers I prefer:

Again....there is no right answer, this is just my personal preference. I think you experiment until you find methods that you prefer :D

I really want to try this method. Im thinking your jar method will help keep thing not so messy. I have 75 g's of ABV bud. I was thinking maybe just starting with 1oz. in the jar. How much coconut oil would I mix with about an oz? or should I use more than that? I use an Extreme q and I vape the stuff pretty good.

The part about this that confuses me is that there's no mention of stirring. You're saying you can just mix up the canna-oil and let it sit in the crock pot for 9 hours without stirring? Ive read different crock pot methods, as well as the tried-and-true stovetop method, and stirring is one of the most crucial steps. Does coconut oil behave differently than other reagents to allow this?

I'm a little baffled about some peoples fear of the law still. I know a guy who smoked pot and liked it when he was a teen, and now that he is almost 50 and is still a virgin, he will not enjoy weed or grow it even though he live in a secluded tree area. He does not drink, he does not have sex and he does not smoke or even consume chocolate, and the one thing he can do for fun, he will not because it is against federal law, even though it is state legal for medicinal use and it is decriminalized where I live. This poor guy will, live rest of life without any thing to give him pleasure. All cause federal law.

I suspect it gives him comfort to be law-abiding. As for sex, he could be having sex left and right, up and down, forward and backwards, just not with others. Don't assume he is orgasmic-less just because he is solo. He may be of the school, "Nobody does me Better". And chocolate may not ring any bells for him. Is he as happy as the next guy? Does he smile a lot? Does he have friends? That's the tale that will tell.

I do shake or swirl the jar of oil once a day, during the process.
If you are just cooking it in the crockpot, no jar, then yes, you should stir maybe every few hours.

I always stir periodically, I agree it is key.

I don't measure the oil, I use enough to thoroughly wet the ABV I'm working with and then add a little extra to make stirring easier.

Gotcha. Which method do you believe gives the best infusion results? Crockpot or stovetop?

Today I got some organic virgin coconut oil and decided it was time. I have about 80 grams of medium/lightly vaped weed in a bowl, inside a crockpot filled with water right now. I used almost two cups of melted coconut oil. I did the same thing as Lo mentioned and have in the past as well. My previous batches weren't really strong and I never had this large of an amount of avb before. This is a shitload of avb haha.

As for straining it once it's done, I believe I'll use my french press (which I realize now I could have used for the simmering process as the glass part is removable. Doh!). Then I will strain it through another permanent style coffee filter to get out some of the more fine particles.

I don't think one method is any better than the other. For larger batches the crock pot is convenient, larger jars and less adding water. Smaller batches I like a smaller mason jar in saucepan.

Very good. I'll be working with 1-2oz, pretty sure I'll be doing in a saucepan. So the lid to the mason jar can stay on the whole time, except to stir it?

Whats a good water level to be maintained in the pan?

All done. I wound up transferring the avb/oil over to two mason jars as the crockpot wouldn't simmer without the lid on. I let it simmer overnight and stirred it every couple hours other than while I was sleeping. I had the lids on but left it just loose enough for any pressure to escape but as far as I know, no water got in. In total, I believe it simmered for ~12-14 hours.

After work I went and got some soy lecithin (should have done this from the start but I just remembered today), crushed up about six tablespoons of the lecithin and split it between the two jars while heating. Once the mixture hit 80C and I could see the lecithin was dissolved, I transferred the mixture into my French coffee press. I didn't find a need to filter it a second time. This was the yield from about 80 grams of medium vaped AVB. I believe these are just quart jars (two cups? IDK...)

I leave the lid off when doing the saucepan bit personally. I've seen it done both ways. Long as you don't have it so water condensation drips into your jar you're good I'd say.

I keep water level high up on the jar and add water as it evaporates. Not high enough to get in the jar though.

I did the coconut oil (trader joes brand) and it turned out great. Those photos above, where the green is dark green. Wow and WOW. Mine is a much lighter color. Sour D + chocolate and i made using just a wee bit. Used the mini crock pot that came as an accessory to the big crock pot. "Little nibbler" appretizer warmer...Repurposed as The Infuser. 6 + hours in the mini crock pot, cheesecloth squeeze and wala. Its potent enough, but next time ill give it a go for 12 hours or so. That dark green is saweet! Totally envious!

Excuse the obvious question, but does this mean a saucepan filled with water around it, making it so that the water level is even with the oil inside? That sounds like a great hack to a double boiler, especially with the mason jar having some thickness to it. Please advise!:rockon:

That's the way it seems to me. I've made canna-oil on a few occasions in a saucepan on the stove.. But using the mason jar as a double boiler seems simply genius by decreasing the surface area, minimizing loss, and probably cutting way down on the smell. I look forward to trying it out. I think the anticipation is even making me vape more so I can collect enough AVB, lol.

The jar of finished product is just a pint jar so there was only about 350mL of oil from ~80g of avb. That's why it's so dark I think.

Haha I'm pushing the limits today. I'm not going to vape, just ingest these capsules, they aren't strong enough. I just ate 10 capsules (10mL oil) so we'll see where that puts me. I figure this is a safe way of judging just how strong this oil is so I can find a suitable recipe.

I added extra coconut oil half way through the extraction because it was a bit difficult to stir & I didn't want to leave too many actives behind. Had I not, these would probably be a little more realistic. I hate taking pills so was hoping these would be strong enough where only a few would do it.

I feel mighty fine right now, but there's something missing... I think I'm used to the psychedelic effects of vaping, whereas oil made with avb is cannabinoids that have more of a physical effect. This is a good thing, because I can't stand the psychedelic effect sometimes (gives me hardcore anxiety/paranoia). Ganja makes me trip harder sometimes than even an eighth of zoomers, so this is kinda nice. Very peaceful and relaxing :)

Yeah, taking pills does suck. But whats worse is that rancid cannabutter taste. Its awful! Cant get the taste out of my brain!

Its making pills for me. Bring on the weed tasting burps!

My continuing coco-saga....

So I took about 4.5 oz of ABV and water cured it over some days in a 10 quart soup pot. I dried it out. It is practically odor-less. I put a few tablespoons of taste-less, dried vae-poo on some peanut butter sandwiches and slept very well: I didn't even have to get up in the wee hours to wee. But I peed my bed. No, that last thing isn't true at all.

It now weighs (or what's left) 2.75 oz. I just mixed warmed-up coco-oil and remaining duff in Mason jar in crock pot.

The adventure continues................

Hmm I'm interested to see how this turns out! I did a water cure on an eighth of bud a long time ago and it was the weirdest thing ever to smoke! It was so boring and flavourless but super smooth. I wonder what the colour of your oil will be

After 20 hours or so in crock pot, I harvested the oil. The oil has an olive color and is very dark. I've tasted the oil and I can taste some canni-connection, but it is not pervasive. Still not very tasty. Hopefully it won't taste bad cooked with something.

I'm going to run it through a Melita paper filter to filter out the suspended organic matter. I'm not sure if that helps or not. But what the heck.

Dang that post-use is black! You DONE extracted everything from it!

It will be good. If not, turn it into massage oil!
