dewaxed ntane?

smokum

I am who I am and your approval isn't needed!
Just removes the plant waxes stripped in the extraction process... more pure by definition, but not totally necessary unless you want/need to.

Edit: but also removes some/most terpines, so the 'cost' is at loosing some flavor

Just to add a bit more, there's a difference between dewaxing and winterizing, with dewaxing you use a mechanical method (dry ice and a Buchner filter) to separate the plant fats, with winterizing you use a secondary solvent like alcohol to remove the fats and waxes.

Its a winterized oil made with "ntane", ntane is medical grade butane. Many people believe that it's cleaner then 5X or 7X filterd butane.

How is butane used in the medical field?
I ask because it seems to me that the phrase "medical grade" is being used too loosely quite often for nails and other stuff to demand a premium.

As a refrigerant? There are uses for it in the field that require very pure n-tane but they're few.

To be honest @mestizo I have no idea what medical application it could have other then in a lab maybe. I do know that ntane isn't a new product and used to be very expensive compared to 5x filterd 'tane.

It is hard to always know what's are the safest products these days as sometimes food grade trumps medical or vice versa.

It is used as a refrigerant (so is propane sometimes), a food grade propellant and for botanical essential oil extractions of course :D.

N-butane contains no mercaptans (the leak detector) or propanes (the propellant) that a normal can of Tane would have. A can of butane that empties completely in say 60 seconds would contain more propane/isopropanol then a can that takes 90 seconds to empty.

I am not familiar with that mechanical method. How does that work?

Not sure I understand. The dry ice cools before butane evaporates? I get the funnel and paper filter, I just don't get where the dry ice comes in.

The dry ice is going to lower the temperature of the ethanol to the point that the waxes precipitate from solution. The buchner funnel uses a filter disc to filter out those waxes and a vacuum to pull the ethanol through the filter disc. A #1 whatman filter is great for this.

For me the easiest method (I have no vacuum) is to let most of the butane boil off after extraction, then add about 5ml of ethanol to the butane before it gets too gooey. then I allow the Ethanol/butane mixture to off gas the rest of the butane. Afterwards I put the ethanol into the freezer overnight to precipitate the wax, load it into a 10ml syringe and push it through a .22um syringe filter onto silicone sheets for thin film drying. After all the gloss is gone you know the ethanol is evaporated off and you are left with sickly awesome smelling absolute.

I then gently heat the absolute with a 1.5:1 gm to ml ratio of Liquidizer electric juice. so for 1.5 gm of absolute I would add 1ml E-juice in a shot glass over very low heat in a water bath. This makes it easy for me to vaporize the absolute based E liquid by using a syringe to add it to the coils in my RBA on my Sigelei zmax mod.

Haha ok here is my Tek
1.Take metal thermos that holds 16oz liquid and drill 3 1/8" holes in the top. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004MH3NGU/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
2. Put tape over holes. Pack thermos to about 2/3 full of material and put on lid.
3. Put thermos in freezer overnight. The tape prevents entry of water which can ice over your trichomes and prevent good extraction
4. Put can of Vector butane in freezer overnight or at least a few hours. This cools the 'tane and lowers the pressure.
5. Take butane and thermos outside. Remove tape from thermos. Inject butane into thermos in one of the lid holes and let sit for 2 hours. The other two holes are for venting. If it is warm outside an ice bath can help keep the thermos cold. One can of Vector will fill the thermos about 3/4 full with the herb inside.
6. After 2hours put unbleached coffee filter over the end of thermos and insert into regular mouth ball jar with metal rim but no lid on. (the metal rim is the perfect size to go around the filter and keep it tight). The jar would be upside down over the thermos.
7. While holding everything tight together invert the thermos and jar assembly and the butane filters nicely into the ball jar. keep inverted for the 10 or so minutes it takes to get all the butane out.
8. you can let the butane offgas from the thermos after removing the thermos and filter from the ball jar. Then use Iso to get the rest of the goodness from the material. I dont do a second butane run.
9. Sit the ball jar in a warm water bath until most of the butane is gone.
10. Add 5ml everclear to the remining butane and keep in water bath ntil no bubbles are formed. You should already see some wax precipitating.
11. When no butane smell is left cap the ball jar and put it in the freezer overnight. It should go to a cloudy yellow color.
12. remove the liquid with 10ml syringe and put 0.22um syringe filter on.
13. Push the BHO/everclear mixture through the filter onto silicone sheets. Make sure not to let the everclear warm up too much when using the syringe filter or your precipitated waxes may reenter solution. let dry to a dull clear yellow. If it looks glossy water is still present.
14 remove the absolute from the silicone sheets. I usually warm the sheets with my hand until the absolute gets a little sticky than roll it up into a ball using the sheets.
15. Weigh the absolute and calculate the amount of electric juice to add. I do 1ml juice for 1.5 gm absolute. Put this electric juice in a shot glass and warm up in a water bath (100 degrees F-120F)
16. Add the absolute and stir with metal dab tool until dissolved.
17. Pick up the liquid with a syringe and use syringe to dispense onto coils of RBA. I like the syringe because it lets me add just the right amount onto the top of the coil.
18. Enjoy!

Credit to Jump and Skunkpharm for introducing the thermos idea. Yeah it uses more butane than columns but it is very easy to do and the results are awesome.

Not exactly true ... when winterizing a bho run you do use a secondary solvent such as iso but then you place the iso/bho run in the freezer for 48 hours or so to let the plant waxes solidify and rise to the top. Then you take it out of the freezer and poor it through a strainer to remove the waxes. The second solvent is need because obviously butane is unsafe and evaporates way to fast for this process.

You use a secondary solvent like ethanol because of differing polarities of the solvents. You can run BHO, evaporate the butane out, and then winterize, because butane and ethanol are different chemicals with differing polarities. Butane pulls fats from the flower, ethanol pulls them out of the oil. Plus, ethanol has a higher evaporation temperature than butane, so if you don't have access to a vac you can use ethanol to help evap it out.

True however ethanol is both polar and non polar so not the best for this application imo. Iso is polar while butane is non polar which is why I blast straight into 99% iso when I'm winterizing a run.

I'm still trying to grasp how you are trying to pull the fats from the oil with the ethanol ... it goes in the freezer at some point, right?

Yup, you just gotta make sure your oil is fully mixed in the ethanol first, then freeze to drop temps/precipitate the nasties out.

In what way do you think the thermos method is better? Just easier, or better results?

I have always used the tube method, but would be willing to change if the end result was better.

I don't understand how you are pulling fats simply by blasting into iso. Do you freeze after and filter or what?

Yeah exactly. Iso is polar while butane is non polar so they repel each other so when you blast straight into iso the butane basically purges itself off with very little heat in very little time. After the butane has purged off it's into the freezer.
