Thank you for your insight. I whole-heartedly agree, and was in fact thinking about starting a separate thread the other day for the exact same reason. I was hoping to try to work things out here first though, as I feel we've got a good thing established as a community on this thread and I'd like to keep building on it if at all possible. The inherent problem with this thread seems to me to be trying to serve two separate functions.
A. The OP @EverythingsHazy is seeking collaborative forum advice on concept pieces that he would like to then take to Chinese blowers as proposed new products.
B. Members fear that having too many cooks in the kitchen will mess up the relationship that @blankrider has already made with Steven, but are also actively proposing ideas for new pieces that a consensus of people would like to see made.
I think the only reasonable way to deal with this conflict is to have a separate thread for each person that wants to work with an overseas glassblower. So basically if @blankrider would like forum advice on new glass ideas for him to bring to Steven (or any other blower for that matter), a dedicated thread would be a better way to go. That way any posts in this thread are to share ideas, designs and criticisms to proposals that @EverythingsHazy is working toward.
We cannot prevent members from contacting Chinese vendors. Members have the right to do whatever the fuck they want in this world. However forum members can vote with their mouses (mice?) as to which thread they choose to support.
So @blankrider you are welcome to start a thread for glass concepts for your dealings with Steven, but it's entirely up to you if you want to or not. I hope that you do.
The time, however, might have come to split this thread up a bit. If @blankrider doesn't want to do it, I will happily start a new thread, as long as in doing so I'll have the support of all those here with whom I've so enjoyed working recently.
If we do go forward with a new thread, I would recommend we call it something like "Open-Source glass," and that we lay down a few simple guidelines from the beginning to ensure that everyone's voice and opinion get's fair representation.
So who would be interested in a new thread? Do people feel that this move would be beneficial to what we are trying to accomplish here? Thoughts?
EDIT: @Stu I was just thinking about the idea of multiple threads for each glassblower we have contact with. The only problem with that currently is that we only have contact with one, and there seems to be some dispute over this "territory." In the long run I think that would be ideal but, until more contacts are made overseas, I suggest we focus mostly on ensuring equal input into new designs by all participating members, so that we can utilize our one contact most effectively. Either here or in a new thread, whatever the group decides to be the best course of action.
