Netflix's daredevil looks like it could be a good series...
...it seems like they're going for a dark, frank miller-like interpretation.
I am definitely willing to give the Netflix Marvel (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage) the benefit of the doubt. And Daredevil certainly looks very true to the comic in terms of grit and violence. I'm especially psyched to see David Tennant as Kilgrave/Purple man.
But, given the plots and characterizations we've seen so far and what other projects are coming, I'd bet good money Daredevil is far more Brian Michael Bendis than Frank Miller. Bendis wrote Daredevil long before he wrote the Avengers, and actually wrote it for longer than Miller- Miller wrote it for 2 years then came back for a brief run; Bendis wrote it for 5 straight years, 55 issues in a row.
And keep in mind how much of the MCU and Sony flicks are the Bendis version of the characters and stories. The Captain America in the movies has more in common with the Ultimate Cap- superhuman rather than peak human strength and healing, friendship with Bucky pre-dates his becoming Cap; the Spider-man movies, both the Raimi and the later ones, have more in common with Ultimate Spider-man than the original (origin is from a genetically engineered, not radioactive, spider; Parker's parents were scientists working for Oscorp, not CIA agents who knew Fury; Venom has no connection to Secret Wars); the movies used the Ultimate Nick Fury - who was actually visually based on Samuel Jackson, who of course ended up playing him. Even the Fox X-men has many Ultimate elements - no magic/mysticism, no secret identities, mutants openly known and hated from the get-go, Magneto responsible for Professor X's paralysis.
Bendis created the Ultimate universe and wrote Ultimate Spider-man. He created Jessica Jones, brought Luke Cage back and made him leader of an Avengers team (and dropped the Power-man stupidity), plus as noted wrote 55 issues of Daredevil. Bendis (and Mark Millar) wrote Civil War, the next Captain America movie; he has been writing Guardians since 2013. Age of Ultron (the comics) was Bendis. Quake/Daisy, who Skye on SHIELD turned out to be, is a Bendis character. Powers, another upcoming Marvel TV thing, is purely a Bendis creation. I could go on. In fact, the only writers who come close to his impact on the Marvel Cinematic/TV Universe are Lee & Kirby (who of course created most of the characters) and Jim Starlin (creator of Thanos, the Infinity Gauntlet, and Gamora, long-time author of Warlock and other "cosmic" Marvel).
I am a huge fan of Bendis - frankly I think he is a far better writer than Miller - but his dominance is getting to be a
little much. Still, there are worse writers to use as the core of the movie and tv projects.
UPDATE: I have won the bidding for the Infinity Gauntlet. It is on it's way. Soon I will RULE THE UNIVERSE!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHA!! And according to one of those stupid quizzes, "Which Marvel Villain Are You?", I am THANOS. So apparently half the universe is in serious danger. We knew Thanos was bald, but who knew he was a bald dumpy Jewish vaper?
