Cannabis and dreaming / Vaping and sinuses

When i used to smoke cannabis i found that i wouldn't dream very often at all despite sleeping far to much. Also and when i had a T-Break my vivid dreams would start coming back - people around me have experienced similar with there dreams coming back more vivid when they stop smoking so much

Since beginning vaping i sleep far far less (and nowhere near as deep as i used to) but remember my dreams and dream far far more then i used to - or just remember it far far more..

Also aside from all the above, the only minor side affect from vapor i've had is occasionally waking up with very painful sinus headaches despite never getting them when i smoked cannabis. I tend to just put up with them when they come and drink more water and go easy on the vape, but they are frustrating because i can't work out why they turn up.

I have tried to figure out what triggers these sinus headaches and i have a few theories as to why. One theory is that when i get hold of a bit of bad weed that might have slight mold spores on it, that it could trigger the sinus headaches. My latest theory on it, is that they seem to occur after i've had a very deep dreamy sleep. One things for sure so long as they only turn up once in a while it won't stop me vaping and i will eventually work out the reason..

Anyway this is a bit of a ramble but i just wondered if anyone could shed any light on any of this.. Thanks to all of FC for all the incredible knowledge i've learnt from this place!

I think the dream part is because you forget dreams very fast. You forget half your dream after 5minutes and your entire dream 10 minutes after it happened. So when you vape you are in a deeper sleep so you usually wake up more than 10 minutes after your dream.

I only know I've dreamt something when I wake up in the middle of that dream. Dreams do not record to memory so people forget them really fast. An average person has several dreams per sleep.

Can't say about the sinus headaches but I do get allergy-type sniffles when vaping sometimes. I think it may be the vape smoke which somehow lodges in my sinus irritating them. I'd think vapor is the tiniest of particles but i am not sure if that's true. Wonder if they have done studies comparing vape smoke to more conventional smoking as to how the smoke differs. Anyway i am rambling after vaping out.

I do tend to either forget or not to have vivid dreams when i smoke the night before. It may just be the further compromised short term memory from the weed smoking making you forget dreams faster than if you were sober. I have been exclusively vaping past few weeks and don't notice an increase in vivid dreams. Diff strokes for diff folks i suppose.

Hey man, i am the same no dreaming when i have consumed pot that day. doesn't matter if i smoke vape eat... if i get high i will not dream.

2nd, regarding your sinus headaches. I believe vapor is more irritating for the nose/sinuses. the solution? make note to stop exhaling out your nose at all! if you don't pur the vapor/smoke though your sinuses they should be less irritated.

I know from doing oil that it affects my nose and i mentally make note to stop breathing out my nose. (I always tried to do this even when i smoked too.)

I always said I'm not able to remember my dreams when using mj (vape or smoke), ever. Since I use it on daily basis, I was able to notice this during this summer particularly, where I took a forced break for 20 days, and dreams kept flowing in the morning like never before. Needless to say, I'm once again in the oblivion state at the moment xD

I have a deviated septum from facial trauma and weed really helps with relieving pressure and helps me breath

lepstadder,
I switched from smoking to vaping because of my chronic sinus problems, it was getting to the point where I'd spend weeks on end barely being terribly congested and had terrible sinus headaches. I'm at around the 8 month mark where I haven't smoked at all, and my sinus problems are pretty much non existent.

It's interesting that you find that you sleep less since you started vaping Griff, now that I think about it that has changed a great deal for me too. I used to sleep about 8-9 hours a night, now I'm down to 6-7 and wake up feeling so much more refreshed than I did in my smoking days.

For me when vaping my dreams are hard to remember and vaping does cause irritation and runny noses, but smoking does not. I stopped vaping and only smoked for about 5 days, it doesn't irritate my sinuses and I have been having more vivid dreams. I think that's only because vaping is more potent and when only smoking outdoor bud you are never really getting TOO high. Although if I'm using indoor, smoking or vaping or eating, even once in the day, I aint remembering anything that night.

This seems like a good idea weedemon, i will avoid putting the vapor through my sinuses.

This quote is ringing so true on this particular thread, seems its just down to the person really with the sinus issue, some people's flared with smoke, others more with vapor.. One things for sure when the cloud arrives, it will no doubt help us all in one way or another with its water filtration.

When i just smoked i was the worlds worst for waking up. People quite literally thought there was something wrong with me because i would sleep for 12 hours or more very very easily, and would consistently wake up at 1pm when i was meant to be up at 8am in the morning. i think i was just so stoned and full of toxins my body couldn't handle it... I can't even begin to explain the change in my sleeping since i went from smoke to vape. I find now i can't lie in anymore and i can't sleep for more then say 10 hours... i almost feel normal,

One things for sure I definitely remember my dreams more when i've had a tolerance break..

yeah i get really vivid dreams when i take t-breaks too. i was 2 weeks into one last night and had dream that i was a correctional officer and i got stabbed in the chest with a shank. i woke up and was like fuck i need to get some weed in me. myrtlezap is heating up as we speak.

it effects my sinus as well. not too often but using water filtration usually remedies the problem.

Hey guys, normally a lurker around here, but thought I'd provide some insight. I'm taking a course on the psychology of sleep and have learned a lot.

There has been little research done with marijuana specifically, but one study I can cite clearly states that marijuana inhibits REM sleep. REM (Rapid Eye Movement) is a stage of sleep, and the one in which we dream. It's a fascinating stage of sleep in which some parts of the brain are more active than when we're awake! So to think of the sleeping brain as idle is a mistake. We also experience NREM (Non REM) sleep that is subdivided into 4 stages. It is in stages 3 and 4 that we are in a deep, slow brain-wave sleep, as indicated by EEGs in a sleep lab.

Have you noticed how there are some days, where you'll remember a dream clearly, and others where you don't recall dreaming at all? Well, it partly depends on what stage you woke from. If it was NREM, than dream recall is less likely. But when woken from REM sleep, subjects report a much higher rate of dream recall. This itself could play a factor in whether you believe you're dreaming or not. But regardless, by inhibiting REM, you are therefore dreaming less, and also less likely to awake from the limited REM you still get.

During REM, the Pre-Frontal Cortex is shut down. This is the part of the brain believed to handle logic and reasoning. This is a possible reason why our dreams tend to be weird or why we tend to make weird decisions in them. The same study I cited also states that, with THC withdrawl, the brain experiences a rebound effect, in which you get even MORE REM than normal. This is a possible reason why people report such vivid dreams when they quit smoking.

Sleep is a fascinating subject because its an area thats still a mystery to science. It's theorized that sleep serves a number of different functions over our lifetime, and more specifically, REM sleep serves equally vital functions. As they find more and more reasons for why we have REM, I can't help but wonder what long-term negative side effects may come from chronic use, if marijuana does, in fact, inhibit REM.

I hope to one day see more research done on this subject, as the only study I've found is from 1975 and involved only 7 subjects.
Effects of high dosage delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol on sleep patterns in man.

definitely heard this before from some very knowledgeable people

that we have especially increased REM dreaming during t-breaks is amazing

It's posts like the one above from darkdane that make me love FC so much. On the dream side of what i originally posted that answers my questions totally. Now if only i could fix the occasional sinus headache i get from vaping / explain it and i'd be sorted :p . They have stopped turning up as reguarly since the use of water filtration and i think weedemons tip about not passing the vapor through my sinus's will do the trick!

For anyone wondering, alcohol has also been proven to suppress REM sleep.

I've been thinking about what you said regarding better sleep and more dreams when vaping. I've heard many users report a "cleaner" high when vaping, with less of the tiring effects. This is completely off the top of my head, but perhaps those cannabanoids that are activated only at comubustion temperatures are the ones responsible for inhibiting REM. I'd like to see more research on the subject, as I'm simply a business student who's fascinated by the subject.

Either way, I've found that, for me, moderation has helped improve my ability think critically and sleep regularly.

Sleep also serves numerous other functions. For the brain, the latest theories point toward creativity and insight, learning and memory, and emotional regulation. For the body, they've shown sleep to influence metabolic regulation and immune function. So in other words, GET YOUR SLEEP!

I have chronic allergies and 95% of days will not have full use of one or the other nostril of my nose (unless exercising). I have had nights when trying to go to sleep after a night of vaping where my entire nose was more or less blocked with the passages swollen up to the point that I could not breathe through my nose. This was the exception rather than the rule, but overall vaping does irritate my sinuses and has a negative effect on the health of my respiratory system. It is for this reason I've always championed having edibles as the most natural method of cannabis consumption.

I can't say whether this experience is down to a particular strain or method of growing as I haven't analyzed how I reacted to different flowers from different sources. Perhaps more organic methods of growing would result in less irritating strains, but the jury is still out on this one for me.

I never dream or remember my dreams, and definitely sleep far less than I used to before vaping habitually. I cannot sleep more than 6-7 hours and i'm typically refreshed because it's a solid sleep. I can never ever sleep in anymore... i'm always up at 6 or 7am and I used to be a night person my entire life. I can't sleep without weed...literally i'll be awake for a week straight...and a little bit of vapour will put me right out to the best sleep of my life.

When I vape, I get runny sinuses too. It also causes me to salvitate. Just a couple of the side effects, perhaps relaxing the glands?

I get the same. Seems to be an effect of the vapor.

Try to not breathe in through the nose when you exhale (through the mouth).

I'm glad you said that about the salivating, happens to me too and I was getting a little worried that I was becoming a drooler!

I wonder if the enhanced REM from the T-break could be used to help learning lucid dreaming

I have experienced that when I smoke before bed, I tend to not have any dreams or at least I don't remember them. But when I don't smoke before bed, I get very intense dreams which is quite strange as I would think it would be vice-versa.

I've smoked less than I would like recently (ie nothing for 4 days) due to unavailability. I have noticed very vivid dreams, waking up bricking it midway. One scared me to the point that I could not contemplate attempting to sleep again immediately. In the dream I was walking along normally, then my body started moving involuntarily, it started with me whipping my arms out for no reason and not being able to walk straight, then next thing I know it is as though I am possessed by something, I am end up sliding across the ground leaning backwards at an impossible angle while looking down watching my feet sliding across the floor like I am being dragged, then I slam into a wall and I am completely panicking and bricking it in full view of the aghast public in the entrance of a bank in my town! At that point I awoke!

Scary shit man. The other night even though I blazed I had an extremely realistic, almost lucid dream. I was standing in a big field by the sea and vividly watched 3 planes just crash into the floor one after another. I remember consciously dodging the debree. Doesn't sound like much but it was pretty fucking scary at the time. Apparently plane crash dreams mean you are biting off more than you can chew with some project and it's about to be postponed. Sure enough next morning there's a big problem with my grow area and I have to reboot it and postpone for a few weeks or more. I wonder what your scary dream meant? :uhoh:
