Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome

Honestly I think this has more to do with vapor and smoke being a stomach irritant than anything. Also bad technique when taking a hit that can lead to vapor/smoke getting farther into your body than what is healthy. For instance, lately I've been spacing out my water hits into two, the first being the draw, after which I exhale the little bits of vapor that have already come up and that would normally go too far down if the whole thing was taken in a single hit. The second hit is clearing the bulk of the vapor produced down into (hopefully) just my lungs, and then out again.

Of course the piece used matters a great deal as well, as can size/design will determine just how much vapor/smoke goes into body on that "first hit" or initial draw.

This is purely my personal experience from dealing with stomach problems in my previous vapor setups and experimenting with how different factors affected the pain.

Im 22 years old, been smoking regularily since i was ten thanks to my redneck cousins, god bless the herbs. However, for the past six months, ive been having this reoccuring nausea and vomiting accompanied by abdominal pain everyday. The past week is the first time ever where it was so intense i was hospitalized for a few days on IV with saline and antinausea meds. After going through every single test, xrays ultrasounds ct scans, beryl coal drink crap.. bloodwork urine tests and everything.. theyve came to the conclusion im a perfectly healthy 22 year old male. Thats when my doctor mentioned Cannibinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome. At first i thought it was total garbage.. propaganda by the government. Because i love my herbs.. i dont vape personally i enjoy my spliffs. Im only here cause i seen this thread. The more and more i read up about this diagnosis.. the more it made sense.. reoccuring nausea and vomitting through out my days.. horrible stomach pains.. bad burps.. and relief in a hot shower. It unfortunately sucks because im in love with how marijuana affects the thinking process. How ever i guess its time to make lifestyle changes. Oh well now i can maximise profits and not smoke hahahahahaha

Hey everyone. First of all, I'd like to thank everyone for contributing to this thread. Unfortunately (especially being the natural skeptic I am) there are few scholarly articles to confirm CHS so we are stuck with only anecdotal evidence. That being said, I'd like to share my story in hopes that it will not cause any tension, but maybe help someone who is suffering from some very serious symptoms.

A Little Background Info
I'm 21 years old, I started smoking when I was 14 and was smoking daily by the age of 15. I smoked approximately three to five grams every single day with not a single break that was longer than a 24 hour period. I make a living off of music, so I have never needed to get tested for a job or really abstain for any financial reason. I have been a vegetarian for 7 years and am generally pretty conscious of my health, although I did mostly smoke and not vaporize. I never smoked cigarettes and rarely ever drink alcohol. I did have my appendix removed a little over a year before I ever felt any symptoms.

Description of Troubles
Up until about a year and a half ago I had no apparent negative side effects from using cannabis and in fact was a huge advocate (and still am) of this glorious plant. In May of 2013 I went to the hospital for the first time for what I believe to be CHS. At the time, I did not believe it. I was mostly unaware at the time but when brought up I thought: "I've been smoking for years and all of my mates smoke just as much if not more". "This is just some propaganda in order to deem the medicinal value of marijuana illegitimate." "People are prescribed marijuana for nausea why would it cause it?" After going to the hospital 26 times between May of 2013 and the end of April 2014, I was diagnosed with just about everything someone with healthy blood work and scans could be diagnosed with (CVS, anxiety, depression, panic disorder, PTSD, GERD, etc.). During this time I was waking up literally every single day and throwing up bile and experiencing symptoms almost identical to CVS. I tore my esophagus three times and threw up blood multiple times within that time frame. The last time I went to the hospital in April of 2014, the doctor told me about CHS and told me to do some research. After being on just about every medication possible, I was willing to try anything, including leaving my relationship with marijuana.

Within a matter of 6 days I had absolutely no more nausea. I decided that I would take 90 days off to assure that it was marijuana and not just a coincidence since I quit. I have abstained 4 months today from marijuana and have had absolutely no symptoms since. I've gained thirty pounds (I'm 5'8"; went from 99 lbs in May {yikes!} to a healthy 132 today). I hope that one day I can continue to use marijuana on a much less frequent basis but I wanted to post and share my story.

Closing
I'd just like to say thanks for reading if you've made it this far and I hope this can help anyone who is struggling with this. I have read many blogs of people being angry at people like me for posting about this and that is my last intention. I am a firm believer in the medicinal value of marijuana and would still recommend to anyone for a lot of different illnesses. I don't believe that everyone who smokes like I did will have these results but it can happen to some people. Please be open to accepting that marijuana could potentially affect people differently and sometimes negatively. I can relate to it being hard to swallow trust me, but please do not diminish other peoples health issues because it hasn't affected you or someone you know in the same way.

Much love,
Blueingreen

I am having an episode of this today I think... can anyone help me?
I have dealt with CHS for a loooooong time. The first thing I do is try promethazine to stop it. Tablets if you figure out what's happening soon enough, or usually suppository form. If that doesn't work I use a narcotic and "knock myself out" and sleep for a long time. Most times when I wake up I feel better. Just groggy. Someone on this forum said that I use this for an excuse to use the narcotics. WRONG. I'm a pot smoker, not a druggie. This is what works for me.
Next cut back on your daily intake of mj in any form. Good luck!

Thanks for your heartfelt contribution here. You describe my own horror almost exactly. There is life living with this demon. You must be smart and consume mj in any form in moderation. My question is: why do some of us get CHS and not others?

Thanks I took some extra xanax to try to calm me down.... also been having horrible anxiety for last 4-5 months. So getting this again now is just making everything worse.

Anxiety seems to be a trigger for me. Hard if not impossible to avoid all of the things in life that bring me stress.( I used to think my son made me sick. I always had an episode right after he would come home from college for a few days. )
Try to avoid stress whenever possible. Whatever will take some of the load off of your shoulders to start with. Try and find time to relax and do something that you enjoy doing. I also pray, but that's me. It helps to have a friend to "unload" your stuff with too.
It's a real pain to live with this but you can do it. Start listening to your body. :)

Well I do take huge hits... I'm 46 been smoking since I was a kid, don't think I can stop..

Now about how I inhale huge hits,, maybe I can make them smaller?

My GF is a teen social worker. She was telling me about what the kids call "Ghosting Hits" where they hold them in so long nothing comes out... Its supposedly a trend? Maybe I been holding them in too long? I read how its bad for you

Ive been going through this for the last 6-7 years maybe 8-12 times total. Sometimes it goes away for a year or six months..

Last time I had it about a yer ago I started taking Omeprazole ( generic prilosec ) for a few months , it didn't come back so I stopped taking it... think it helps?

I don't think it's necessary. You can do this without that stuff. What I do works for me until I can't stand "moderation" any more and way overindulge. Then I just start over again. It's worth it because I love marijuana in all forms for recreational and medical reasons and I don't intend on giving it up.
What I do: First I actually quit for about 3 months to clean out and start all over. Now I smoke less mj and when I smoke I make it "a big deal" and enjoy my treat. I smoke a small amount starting in the afternoon sometime. Then after dinner and again in the evening. I also have to watch my diet and not eat a lot of fatty foods or beef because sometimes they can get the barfing started. Hardest of all, I try to avoid stress. You can do it too.
Other than that I live a pretty much happy and healthy life. I am blessed!

Or moderate, you don't need to stop. The poison is in the dose. Some people are just in denial that they are drug addicts. And many medicinal users are just trying to avoid withdrawal. All my opinions only ofcourse.

Guys... if cannabinoids are the issue you need to stop intaking them...
Said it best right there!

but what if its not?

try going to the dr to get checked out.

but dont mention CHS and see what they say....

you could be hypoglycemic, you could have a vitamin deficiency... you could be having galbladder, kidney, appendix exc issues....

if you go in with the intent of being diagnosed chs... you most likely will be cause there is still a trend of doctors not liking cannabis for "insert stereotypical reason" and would happily associate any negative reaction to it.

cannabis and cannabinoids do play on bloodsugar... thats why they are evaluating its effectiveness on maintaining diabetes...

so maybe its not the pot you need to be worried about... or maybe it is?

Do you have CHS? If not then you have no idea what you are talking about. No disrespect intended.
Most of us have been to Dr after Dr for this and had every test imaginable. I have. Had gallbladder removed. Had all body systems tested. Most doctors are uneducated about CHS but they are starting to figure it out.
"so maybe its not the pot you need to be worried about... or maybe it is?" Un-necessary comment.

Pot smokers are not drug addicts.

I didn't say that. You can make a statement like beer drinkers aren't alcoholics either, but some can be, no? It's a drug, period. Some can moderate, and some cannot.

if you go in with the intent of being diagnosed chs... you most likely will be cause there is still a trend of doctors not liking cannabis for "insert stereotypical reason" and would happily associate any negative reaction to it.

Or perhaps there are in fact negative reactions to it, for some people, who don't moderate?

why is it people are always sure to comment that there was no disrespect intended from a clearly disrespectful comment... as if somehow stating that you dont mean it that way... makes it less disrespectful...

No disrespect of course.

LOL @farscaper, and some mods hate exactly that kind of thing as well. I don't think any comments are unnecessary either, unless they clearly break the rules. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and just because someone thinks their opinion is the "right one" isn't necessarily so. Some people just can't accept opinions that they believe in their hearts is right. I've been noticing this alot on the forum at times. Even in some of the vape threads, it's like "nope, that's wrong that's not MY experience".

OK I will be bold. Vaporization and eating pot prevent CHS. I do not beleive there is anyone reading this that vaporizes pot only ( no smokin) and has CHS.

Perhaps our friend @CentiZen can chime in again?

After I was diagnosed with this; I stopped completely for several days and then started enjoying the herb on an infrequent basis. Within the week, my nausea was gone. I just didn't feel sick anymore. Eating no longer made my stomach warble and waking up is not a 4 step process anymore. My life returned back to normal, for lack of a better term. Of course, this is my story and your mileage may differ.

Second post in the thread. Was also brought up in "Nausea: The Monster" as well.

I'm of the opinion that we're fucking around with your endocannabinoid system by flooding it with external cannabinoids and that can lead to some not-so-pleasant stuff. Those that have had experiences with other drugs can see some similarities. I think it's just withdrawal of cannabinoids causing nausea and loss of appetite among other things (which makes sense considering cannabis can reduce nausea and increase appetite.) :2c:

Couldn't agree with you more @Quetzalcoatl ! I am living proof of this as well. It's amazing how people justify their usage, when it's the vaping that causes many of the issues to begin with. www.cannabisrehab.org is a great place for those looking for support, it's hepled me so much over the past few weeks.

I am looking forward to returning to vaping, but am going to treat it the same as any other drug. I've said it so many times before, the poison is in the DOSE.

I'm not saying that my experience is like everybody else's, that would be silly because everybody has different sensitivities for different substances regardless of tolerance. I vape like crazy for constant neuropathic and muscular pain. Too many cannibinoids for my receptors? Perhaps, but it's a million times better than the pharmaceutical alternatives, again for myself but maybe not for the next person. For a while I even thought there was something wrong with the weed (it was top shelf), but the problem was I had reached my toxic limit for the by-products of combustion. Because when when I switched to vaping the issues went away. This may not be the case for everybody, because again everybody is different. Some people... some people like cupcakes exclusively, while myself, I say, there is naught nor ought there be nothing so exalted on the face of god's grey earth as that prince of foods... the muffin!

@grokit My experiences as well. There is documentation of toxic combustion generated cannabinoids to the hypothalamus which regulates the gastrointestinal tract, body temp, and the autonomic system (that explains the tactual effect of warm showers).
If I smoke even a little my body begins the headaches and prodromal GI symptoms the next morning.
You don't have to give up pot, just give up smokin it.
And it's obvious that some of you think you can understand this horrible syndrome without having it. It's not just nausea....its nausea that makes you want to die. The shower thing has to be felt in order to understand its significance
