So while your herb tray is empty would you mind doing one or two drop tests and reporting back?

That's a lot to ask. Maybe a short drop on carpeting?

As for the knurling you are asking about, I do not really see the need for it.

It really isn't knurling as the those vertical imprints are cut shallow. Your finger tips can't even feel them, that's how shallow & fine they are, yet the make a noticeable difference when turning/grasping.

the name of the grinder, machined to cover the 3 parts!
They only line up one way and it would be something to do while being super medicated!!

Well, maybe some visual indication of how to align the pieces.

The visual alignment would be getting the parts twisted around to form the name over the 3 parts.
A game to waste some time on!
Think of the name stretched across the 3 parts and etched into the aluminum.
When you open and disassemble the words will be in disarray.
The fun is getting it all to line up again, think Rubic's cube!

Good idea to see if the magnets are strong enough to withstand a 4 to 5 foot drop!

I'm thinking it'll be fine but thought it was a worthy test considering I have never seen a grinder with a herb catch with no threads.

I did the test in my basement on a carpeted floor. I do not want to drop this and mess up the finish.
I started at 4 foot and knocked it off and sent it flying, stayed together.
Moved to the 5 foot table and same process with same results! These magnets are strong!

Still not satisfied, I tried a 6 foot drop and still held together!
7 foot drops from the ceiling and still it does not budge!
I tried straight drops, side drop, spinning drops from 7 foot and still together!!

Still not satisfied, There were no marks from the carpet so I thought, let's really test these magnets out!
I started by throwing it at the carper gently, like bouncing a ball.
Side, Top, Bottom any way it stayed together... CRAZY!

Not wanting to be beat by tiny magnets, I gave it a hard toss as if I was bouncing a ball from the ground onto the wall, pretty hard!
Finally the damn thing came apart!!

Also tried it in my office from my desk to the hardwood floor.
Grinder stayed together and left a dent in the floor....Luckily it's a rental!!

I think it is safe to say, if it is closed it will stay together.
Falling from a desk, counter, pocket or bag should be well survived.
It may open if it falls from height on a hard surface like concrete though due to the shock.

Funny, I've never dropped a grinder. @lazylathe, you certainly went above & beyond.

Possibly some very fine, decorative knurling would be nice.

Apart from color, I'm not interested in aesthetics, I'm only interested in functionality & ergonomics, & as lazylathe demonstrated, durability. The only other light imprinting that looks like it won't hurt fingers is this one. Is this one honeycomb?:

Good to hear it held up. We tested and designed it to make sure it stayed together if it was dropped. My floor has tons of dents in it too. Lol.

I'm curious. Did the top pop off when you threw it or was it the bottom?

It was the top that came off.
I would imagine because it is heavier?

Yeah, usually the top pops off when it takes a huge hit at a certain angle. It usually needs to be thrown though. If the top was lighter, it would be even better at taking falls.

We'll experiment with different grips, but we haven't felt the need for them yet. Since it never jams, it doesn't require that much force to turn, but we understand that some people would like them. We always felt it was better to reduce the amount of force required to operate it instead of adding grips to increase the force that is available.

Yeah, usually the top pops off when it takes a big hit. It usually needs to be thrown though. If the top was lighter, it would be even better at taking falls.

It did take quite the flick of the wrist to finally get it to pop open!
Any harder and I would have started to damage the surrounding furniture.

I just thought of another good test! Should have done this a long time ago...
The center grinding pin needs to be tested!!
So here we go!!

Loaded up some sticky Bruce Banner and shoved a nug into the magnet!

Started upside down to ensure the nug stayed in place.
A few turns later and this was the result.

You can see a bit of resin on the magnet and some on the center post thread as well.
Works just as advertised!!

I think it could work out considering how the centre post is designed to force the material out from the centre point. Getting started might be a little awkward but I feel like the tooth geometry might hold up well in this case.

The SW2 has a few teeth removed to facilitate this kind of scenario but the bud tends to get swished at the centre point and it takes so much torque to get the grind going that the middle section jams at the threading making it difficult to unscrew after.

BTW really nice idea of shaping, lazy. Would look phantastic. But guess its would be a haptic and ergonomic desaster - but who knows.

Found a solid chuck and stuffed it in there nice and hard, added some more bits around the first row of teeth.
Same deal, start upside down and there was resistance so I started to twist and could feel the tooth biting into the bud! A few turns later and it's all over with...Another boring show!
The center post has some resin and bud stuck on it butt he magnet is perfectly clean.
I would not say it was any more difficult to grind, just more awkward since I did not want to damage the teeth due to the height increase due to the bud.

Yeah I grind as I vape for the most part. The size looks great. My grinder looks to be about the size of that Santa Cruz but taller because it’s three piece. The taller skinner of this grinder looks nice
