Today was a good day.
My zaps arrived here after about a month of waiting, Finally got them!

Rick fixed my walnut zap with the broken heat-port and also sent me a new little zap (the d15 myrtle burl with the red bow). I just finished zaping a couple stems and I'm very pleased to say both are working great.

The walnut one isn't as hot as the myrtle, But it gives better hits than before with my old heat-port. I'm getting around 4-5 hits off a stem from the walnut and 6-7 off the new myrtle one, No surprise though, As the walnut is definitely a more solid wood which will take some of the heat from the core.

Really? I thought that one of the design aspects of the CRZ's was that different wood densities would not affect temp output.

Oh yeah, I just used my walnut for 4 decent tasty hits and couldn't draw any more but whispy vapor, then took that same stem and got 4 clouds out of the Myrtle.

The ABV difference is like apples and oranges

While the new design has opened up the opportunity to use all types of wood, as it turns out, wood density has had some effect. Also, the size of the shell itself. There were a few that had too much wood around the core and ran a bit cool.

I have three CRZ's now; Ambrosia Maple, Black Locust and Sumac. Of the three, the Locust is the hottest. It is also the smallest. The maple and the sumac run about the same, in spite of the fact that the Sumac is much bulkier.

Oh, that's right, you have not been around for a long time so we understand.
The wood mass and density still affect the heated air produced by the CRZ to a small degree. That has been mentioned on this thread several times. Sorry you may have missed that info.

chib, glad to see your Zaps arrived safely. You did not have a broken heatport. The actual ceramic heater was broken. It was broke in half when I removed it to do some turning on your Zap. When we found it, I fixed it and tried it. Works like it should. The little Myrtle will run hotter as the wood is very light. As I recall we sent a DC transformer too? Do you notice any difference between that and the AC transformer??

Ah, ok. I remember when the CRZ's were first introduced, it was stated that the new design now allowed for all kinds of different woods to be used and I took that to mean that the outgoing temps would no longer be affected by ones choice of woods.

Extrapolation can be a dangerous thing.

It's not that they AREN'T affected, its just much much less so with the added insulation.

I have the myrtle hooked up to my old AC and my walnut hooked up to the DC. The walnut is about the same heat on the outside as is it was when I first purchased (used AC before), but I'm able to get more vapor now. I suppose it came somewhat broken and then once It was dropped a couple times it was finished.

The myrtle gets plenty hot with the AC, not sure why anyone would need any hotter.

Gots a question. When replacing a screen in the glass tooty, I have to take off the whole SS stem section apart from the glass tooty, huh? Because right now, I have a stuck clip in there but no screen (got that out with a paperclip), and I can't get the clip out. I'm only going in from the outside so I'm assuming if I can reach the other side, I could get it out.

This true? I read Rick once before saying to use some vice grips or pliers when removing the nylon section from tootys.

Use a pair of pliers or maybe your grip is enough. Pull the tip out with a twisting motion. Once it starts moving, it will come out easier. Clean the glass and the tip, then re-install a new screen in the tip. I put screens in from the back side of the stem tip but it will work each way. A 1/4" dowel or drill bit(shank end) works well to seat the screen and the clip. Use it as a ramrod when putting in the screen and clip. You will need to spread the clip apart just a little so it will stay tight in the larger SS tubing. Re-install with a new piece of silicone tubing(we supply extra with each Tooty). Work the tubing over the back end of the SS stem tip until only a small lip of silicone is left over the back end of the tip. Then work it into the glass as far as you want. A drop or two of tap water will slightly lubricate the surfaces to make the job easier.
The customer I referred to in my last post has already got back with me. On with the day...........

what is the inner diameter of your glass tooty where the SS tip fits in? I have 3/8" ID silicone tubing and was wondering if the tip would fit snugly inside

Since we are talking about tooties and tooty screens, I need some advice on how to replace the screen since dumbass me removed the screen before checking to see how it goes back in.

Imagine replacing the screen from the port-side of the SS tip (outside). Do I push the screen in until it clicks into the groove and then follow with the clip? That seems logical to me. Or do I have it backwards?

Screen, then the clip. Or pull the SS piece out and you can re-install from either side.

Thank you Rick! I eventually got it. The instructions are kinda overwhelming at first but in the end I overcame that

I finally ordered a clear tooty. Wish I had just ordered it when I ordered my zap as Deez recommended me to do. I ordered with a carb hole. What are your thoughts on the tooty carbs? Yay or nay?

It's too high up for me. Makes it too hard to hold with one hand and still plug the hole. I need a lower hole or a bigger hand.

Yea i wasnt like trying to make you get something that you thought you might not have liked just that its easier for it to all arrive together save a little time and money ya know. anyway i hope you like it sublime! I am not a fan of the carbs but I just like the idea of simply removing the stem from the zap to clear it. Thats just me though im sure some people prefer the one with the carb

I'm a big fan of the plain jane tooty and the mini stem. the carb hole is nice, but come to think of it, it does require two hands.
