Aromazap/Myrtlezap/CeramicRockZap

just as an update as to the power supplies. i decided to purchase the cheap $20 power supply, and it's almost exactly what i got from Rick originally, except all of the parts are cheaper, even the LED screeen only reads to .0 instead of .00
it works well enough as long as i take the cove off and leave the circuitry exposed. it's only moderately dangerous, so i will keep it for now. definitely going to look into the spartan in the future though. i also recommend anyone else looking at power supplies to look into that unit.

Albert H, those are a couple classic Zaps. Actually one classic Zap and one very trippy CRZ. The Zap is a Myrtle and I am guessing it has a SS heatport? The one on the left is a Sumac "Out on A Limb" classic. Some of you will remember we did only a few of the Out on a Limbs and the Sumac(sometimes referred to as SUMO) were the most popular. We stopped the OOAL version because they all had the limb/log center in the piece so we had some occasional cracking of the wood.

We found the basic rule, "you get what you pay for", to be right on with VVPS's. I went through several cheapies before zeroing in on the Hildebrant brand to be good and high quality machines with almost no failures. http://www.tattoomachineequipment.com/tattoo-power-supplies I tried some of the little dinkers we have seen in UD and HI land lately and found they did not work at all or for only a short time. Maybe the quality of those small ones has improved over the last year or so?

I wouldn't expect a unit that has to run with the cover off to last very long. Think about what they do for a minute. They take 120 volts at 15-20 amps and convert it down to 12 volts, 1 amp with a variable voltage control. In my simple mind that takes some mass to do the job right, especially 24/7.

Got the best sleep in over six months last night. Very nice for the old man.

Edit:
Last night Wilma took the baby "out" to sleep. They have all been in the feeding shed for the last week but last night she took the gang up on the hill to bed down. We had a little sun yesterday which melted much of the remaining snow.
Here is a short vid of the gang coming in from the hill yesterday. Daisy is one week old and this was the first day out on the hill, right where she was born. She is looking real cinnamon like to us so we may have to re-name her. Any thoughts?

These cameras are controlled from the house. Needless to say they are on 24/7 and give us much entertainment.

Hey Rick hope everything's working out for you and the family. Now my question is, my MZ resistor is shot. I removed it and got a part number off the old one ( 23J20RE ) Ohmite. I ordered one online and the resistor itself is shorter. Do you know if they modified them or if it will work? The info on new resistor is as reads: Ohmite 23J20RE 3W 20 Ohm. 1252 MX. Please let me know if it is correct. Like I said the resistor itself is shorter. Thanks so much

Shouldn't it be 5W, the resistor? I thought all log vapes used a 5W element.

Well that's what I thought too. But these new ones show same part # but it also gas 3w 20 ohms. Makes no sense. I may just contact sorce of supplier. So this 3w 20 ohm won't work ?

Your post quoted the part number above as 23J20RE, not the 25J20RE which is the correct one.
3 watts will not work.

Thanks Rick, eyes aren't what they used to be. UD also brought that to my attention. I screwed up again. I only ordered 4 and they sent me 4 boxes of 25. What the hell am I gonna do with 100 of these things. Lol. Oh well. S.... Happens, what can I say. Trying to give em to UD. He have better chance of using them than I would. But that for the info.

Doh! Did they charge you for 4, or for 4 boxes? :o

At any rate send me an email when you have a minute and we'll see if we can't work something out, maybe I can take them off your hands for some credit towards an UD. Those are the ones that I use(d) in the 1/4" core UD and I'm supposed to revise it this year so there's a good chance I could use them. I could also send you a handful of the 5w ones for your PD. :peace:

So completely bummed. My cat went running past me desk, got caught in my Zap cord and pulled my Zap and VVPS of my desk. Well you can see the result.

The Zap got cracked *sob*, and the cord got jerked out of its port on the right hand side leaving the top half of the pin stuck inside the port on my VVPS.
The Zap sill works *whew*, but I can't remove the top half of the pin from the port in the VVPS.

So 2 question for all the wise Zappers out there;

1. Is there anything I can/should do for my poor cracked Zap? Or is it only matter of time *sniffle*
2. Since the top of the pin is stuck in the right hand port can I just move the "short" pin from the left hand side and power my Zap with the right hand side? I'd rather not plug the Zap in to test the theory.

Sorry to "like" such a traumatic event... I was sympathizing more than liking.
I am hoping Rick can pop in here with a suggestion.....
It works....
and so my instinct would be to try to keep the unit well waxed for a start to keep it from drying out.
my next step would be to secure a Velcro Strap, and get it on there good and tight.
Finally I would then write to Rick (if he has not answered here) and ask his advice about
wood fillers and such......
and while waiting for a definitive answer, at least you would be "banded" together, and the piece "wood be" in good shape~

Unplug the VVPS from the wall socket and unscrew the four screws that hold the VVPS cover in place. Take the VVPS cover off. The inside of the phono jacks are usually open so you should be able to get a pair of needle nosed pliers in there and back out the broken phono plug. You will need to replace the mono phono plug on your power cord. Years ago my old dog thought it was a good idea to grab my headphones and take off running which broke my headphone plug off inside the jack like yours. My dog destroyed the headphones but the jack was easy to fix.

Happy Valentines Day everyone. Make it special. Smile more and hug alot. Watch out for those chocolate covered strawberries.
Looks like I missed a few days of Zapville at FC.
Cracked Zap and broken VVPS plug from a skittery cat. Glass Tooties, VVPSs and all the stuff that keeps going on even with our doors being shuttered with that big old lock that just says.."Greetings from LEO....tough shit for you Zapman and Zapsters".

A cracked shell on a Zap does not guarantee the Zap will not work and often they will keep working. I am not sure about clamping and gluing as a solution because the internal stressing of the wood will be hard to overcome with glue and a clamp. It will probably re-crack close to the original. I would find some kind of attractive tape and tape it thoroughly with a good body wrap. This of course is not the ideal solution of sending it back to Zapville for a new shell. I wish I could offer that but it is not possible at the present time. Same with the Tooty request and all customer service situations that have come up in the last 7 months. We were forced out of business, the door is still locked and we do not have a key. I cannot respond in any meaningful way to any Zap issue at the present time.

This is a main technique of LEO in the WOD. Shut them down and keep them down and do it any way possible. Truth and Integrity be damned.

We are expecting some news on the legal front soon but then we have said that for the last 6 months. Maybe sometime in 2013?
My sincere apologies for the lack of action on these issues. It sure is not the "normal" Rick but for now anyway, what is, is.

On the other home front, Howling Hills Farm is gearing up for a super season. Some early starts are peeking through the flats looking for light. Early spring meeting with the chefs planned.

On a lighter note, it really was funny on invasion day. LEO strolled into our "starting room" with flats and lights and potting soil and they thought they really had something big. That was until they realized we have a very successful little farm on the hill. Hell, we delivered $600 in LEGAL produce the day before they got here.

Thanks Rick I've given my cherry Zap a place of honor, luckily I my walnut one plus other vapes. It'll always have a loving place in my collection, as it was the first vape I fell in love with and made me a fan and user of log vapes! It's nice to hear that spring is peeking through and loved the calf pics and videos. Keep us updated as Spring is sprung.

Sorry to see and here ur bad luck NewVape. Those things are pretty darn durable. The tattoo power supply you have did you have to short out the left mono plug to make it work, leaving the right side the output? Let me know when u get a chance. I got a new PS and don't know which is which. Looks identical to urs.
Thanks

That's the ticket. So sadly the plug housing inside the PS is covered, at this point I'm going to just get a new VVPS. For the cost of a new one its not worth monkeying around with this one. I have this one that Hazy found and posted on another thread. Now just have to get a back up backup.

I just did that and set it on 12.0. Plugged other mono cord in ( one goes to log ) put a Ohmite 5w resistor on plug and it got hot really fast just holding it, but I reversed mono plugs on power supply and it also got hot really quick. I only left it on these a few seconds because I was only holding it with finger tips. So I know one side or the other is an output, only problem is I don't know, it's not marked. Need a volt meter I guess, any suggestions anyone to determine which is which?
Thanks

Just wanted to make a quick post. Dave at UD has helped me get my VVPS up n going. Talk about great customer support, underdogvapes.com has it. You too Rick. Just wanted to say thanks again to Dave and Amanda. Will defiantly do more business with them. Oh my new black walnut vape has a name now. I call her MISS Foggy. :)
Oh yea Rick, I was unable to buy a CRZ from you before all the BS that started at Zapville. But I bought one used from a guy that he got from you, I also love that thing. The wood is beautiful. Only been used a few times. Thinking of a name for her as well.

UD, PD! MZ and ole Iolite. Also bought CRZ great vape Rick.

Hey all. Been out of the loop in this thread for awhile, but I am still using my zap and still love it. I'm glad to see that while production might have stopped on the zap, its legacy still lives on.

Does anybody know if any glass worker out there is still making the Zap Bubblers? I figure this is a total shot in the dark, but I've Googled every way I can think with no luck. Anybody know any vendor I can check out?
