Advice from experienced BHO makers... Simple Winterization?

Right now, my bho process is as follows:
Grind weed with hand grinder; tightly pack tube; blast into deep pyrex dish; surround dish with hot water until it stops visibly reacting; let sit as long as I can afford to (usually overnight); and surround with warm water when I get ready to scrape it.

Now, without changing much as I am on a budget and doing this on a small scale for personal use, I am looking to improve quality. I have upgrade to a glass tube and found the icmag post that orders butane in terms of quality to help on that end.

I want to start winterizing. 99% isopropyl is what is available to me locally. From what I gather, I do what I've always done and introduce the isolation when the reaction from the hot water bath stops. How much isolated do I add? Then, I gather, I stir it up, run it through a coffee filter and freeze it. I've seen time in the freezer anywhere from 4 to 48 hours. How long do you keep it in the freezer? Do you cover it while it is in the freezer?

I am also unsure about the next step (s). I assume it doesn't freeze, so when it comes out of the freezer do I run it through another coffee filter? And is another hot water bath sufficient to finish the process?

Thank you.

Dude, the black print is really hard to read. Not to :horse: but PLEASE remember SAFETY FIRST when blasting and otherwise using flammable solvents. Think about ANY possible source of ignition or spark before you proceed. That said, you only really need enough ISO to dilute and filter. No set amount. Some even do their blast directly into a small amount of ISO to make it easier to pour and purge. Butane will purge faster from oil diluted in ISO. Then you must purge the ISO. If winterizing, it will need to be in the freezer until ALL of the oil/ISO has passed through the filter. The filter process must be done INSIDE the freezer. (Or back porch if you have a cold winter.). After filtering you will have to purge the ISO. A thin layer in a Pyrex dish, over a hot water bath until all trace of ISO smell is gone. Then do a flame test. If it doesn't spark or sputter, DAB away. If you are using for edibles, use everclear or similar in place of ISO.

Sorry!
I blast outdoors.
I thought it was filtered then placed in the freezer. I understand what you mean. Let it run though the filter while in the freezer. I still do the initial hot water bath purge before this though?

If you are purging the butane first, do the hot water bath until reaction stops then mix with ISO, freeze for several hours, then filter while frozen. Then purge ISO.

Thanks a lot. This is the simple explanation I've been looking for. My only question is how you purge the iso. Is another hot water bath sufficient?

Yes, you can purge the ISO with a simple hot water bath. Purge until ALL ISO smell is gone. Then try a flame test. The finished product should not spark, it should only melt.

DieHard,
I know it isn't an exact science but how much iso do you recommend using and how long in the freezer? Say, per ounce of dry starting product

donkitrk99,
I have people telling me that bho cannot be improved upon with this "iso wash". What is the goal of this extra step? Is it to remove the wax?

The winterization process just allows further removal of unwanted components of the concentrate. Such as waxes, lipids, and chlorophyll.
