FREEZE:

Place the decarbed 7g herbs in sealed Mason jar into the freezer for 24 hours.
Also place a pint of Everclear or other 190+ proof alcohol in freezer for 24 hours.
After 24 hours add 90ml/3fl oz to a Mason jar with herbals. Shake aggressively for 5 minutes.
Place back in freezer for 2 hours and then shake again for another 5 minutes.

1. Using a mesh coffee filter or cheesecloth, clean t-shirt, pantyhose or other fine weave, clean material, place in or line a funnel and pour the solution through it into a clean container and press using a silicone spatula or other utensil. Place the pressed plant material back into the jar for a rinse with fresh, cold alcohol. The jar of material does not have to go back into the freezer. After straining through the initial filter, set it aside until the 2nd run, the rinse, is complete.

2). The 2nd run can be done with no further waiting since it is only a rinse but my test studies have shown that you increase your potency by 25-30%. Using 3fl oz of fresh, freezing cold alcohol, pour it into the jar of material and shake for five minutes. Strain your material as well as possible then add the alcohol solution to the first run solution.

If you don't have a mesh coffee filter or a way to press it, place a square of cheesecloth or other material over your fresh container, being sure to allow enough on each side to fold over the ball. After you've strained the weed, you can dispose of the leftovers as you see fit. If you don't have a press, cut the cheesecloth large enough so that you can pull the corners together and use a wooden spoon handle to wrap them around and then twist. You don't have to squeeze like crazy because the alcohol drains well.

3. Place a paper coffee filter in a funnel or other setup. There are examples in the video and picture guides. Pour your solution into the filter until it's full. Keep filling it until it all filters through. You might have to move the filter around to find fresh spots in the filters. Those husks really gum it up but it's worth the time. You'll get a nice clear Green/Gold Dragon. Of course, you can always filter it again if you're a perfectionist.

REDUCE

Now we're ready for the main event, concentrating the extraction by reduction of the alcohol.

1. Set up your double boiler configuration away from flame or other open heat sources. Use a fan for ventilation. If using an electric range, be sure your vent fan is on high. The more ventilation the better. While there won't be the concentration of vapors there would be for larger quantities, there's still enough to cause a flash fire if not careful.

2. Have the heat source for your double boilers at a level that causes a gentle boil in the water. If you're using a crockpot where the water may not boil, just put it as high as you can. If you use an electric rice cooker that only has one temperature, just keep an eye on it so it doesn't go beyond the desired level. If you don't have a double boiler set up, air evaporation will work, just slower

* If at all possible, your upper chamber(bowl) of the double bowler should fit snuggly in the lower portion a few inches above the water line. This is to prevent loss of steam and therefore water. If it's a loose fit, keep an eye on the water level and add more as needed.

3. Measure your combined haul from both runs. If you don't have a measuring device, you can mark a spot halfway down your jar and use that as your guide. As your tincture reduces, you can keep track of the level easier.

4. Add your dilute GD to the upper chamber/water bath and reduce it by half of the recovered volume. Up to 1/2 ounce will be lost with each run due to absorption and loss. Alcohol boils at a much lower temperature than water and thus will not damage the thc. Depending on your heat source, your solution may bubble a little bit, a rolling boil, or just swirls. What you want at minimum are the swirls. That shows there is action.

5. Finally, this recipe is designed to give you approximately 3 fluid ounces of concentrated Green/Gold Dragon tincture. So for the last step, reduce your solution by half, or down to your goal volume, which should be about 3 fl.oz for this size batch for beginners and bottle it. It is now officially ready to sample. There is a reduction guide for potency level a little further along.

And there you have it. I've tried to make the actual steps as simple yet concise as possible. And as stated previously, this recipe is pretty much designed for the novice, the beginner. It does not require a lot of marijuana that could be lost, anything is possible so it could happen. I don't advocate making this or any other cannabis product for the first time with your emergency stash. You don't have to have expensive pot or even buds. I want everyone to be comfortable within themselves with trying this.

I, too, felt like my product was over cooked.

My Nova'd flower and olive oil extracts do not seem terpy, though they're potent. Definitely overcooked if I really wanted terpenes. My guess is Ardent tuned this thing for THC not terps. All the Ardent lab reports I've seen show only cannabinoids, not terpenes.

You won't find many methods preserving terps I've noticed. Best bet is to use pure kief w/o heat. Only suggestion I personally have for maintaing terpenes levels.

Hi guys, new to the forum here. So I kinda need a bit of help. I've been making butter for a little over a year now. Always have used a mason jar in the oven at 120°c for 30 mins. (Can't accurately set my oven to 122°c for the 27 mins and I don't want to risk going to the 145°c for 7 mins option on my tired old oven. 30 @ 120 has always made a potent butter but required alot of nurture with me sat by the oven so naturally I bought a Nova. Since then I have trashed £300 worth of prime buds. First batch was 14g of Critical Kush which went through the nova then in to my standard oil bath method of extraction into 400ml extra virgin coconut oil with 25% by volume of liquid lecithin, for 4 hours at around 80°c with the material ground to almost flour in a coffee mill prior to infusion. A method I've used time and time again prior to buying the Nova. I should have had 400x 1ml 5mg capsules to microdose with. The result? 400 caps that do not produce any effects at all. Even if I take a handful, I took 6 one night and should have been messy after a 30mg dose. The same thing happened when I tried 14g of lemon haze although this time I tried infusing in the nova and diluting the Infused oil with a premade mix of olive oil and lecithin. Again half ounce that resulted in a useless batch of oil. My last batch I ran this weekend, half ounce again.. bought a metal hand press and metal gauze to squeeze every last drop out of the material. It had been though the nova and fully cooked down. It went in the coffee mill and was turned to flour.. no dust was left inside. Did my double boiler thing for an hour, oil changed colour & smelled the house out. Got every last bit of juice I could from the plant material that went like black sand. Though these would be the ones that worked... Took 2, waited 4 hours.. nothing. Even tried them first thing in the morning when my dose usually hits harder... Only just felt a extremely mild effect.. off 10mg... The support over at FB say they think that because the nova is set to produce high THC it's not producing anything else and my body needs a bit of CBD & CBN + Terps to get the feeling I recognise from oven decarbed weed. Does anyone have anything to add to this as I feel since I've bought the nova it's needed up wasting and ounce and a half in material.

Sorry to hear of your bad experience. That sounds very similar to my attempts at infusing oil using my magic butter machine. I rendered more good pot useless with this machine than I care to admit! Many have good results but I was snake bit for some reason. My MBMII is now a good bookend.

I’ve never had a failed attempt at an excellent decarb result with my Ardent. Unfortunately, I have no suggestions to offer for your process other than make sure your Ardent is in fact heating up. Time period for the process can vary but generally expect 60-75 minutes.

I do, however, have a suggestion for an alternative medication modality. Do a good decarb using your Ardent. Grind it finely as you have been doing and simply put the ground flower in a gelcap of desired size. I generally use a size 1 or 0. Lightly tamp it down and add a few drops of carrier oil of your choice. I use MCT oil but EVOO or slightly warmed coconut oil would do equally as well. Let it set for a while for everything to meld and it’s ready for ingestion. Easy peazy! No more messy infusions, extractions, etc. The more we manipulate this plant, the more of its goodness we loose. Keep it simple.

And I’ve found the efficacy of ingesting decarbed ground flower far superior to anything else I’ve ever tried. Onset generally within 30-60 minutes with a linear ramp up to a gentle peak at about 5 hours with positive effects still recognizable as long as 8 hours later. Give it a try. You’ll like it. It’s been a game changer for me.

A word of caution. I offered this suggestion on another forum. One individual tried a dose prior to going to work and got so fucked up he had to return home. Anytime when trying something new, it’s always prudent to do so when you have an opportunity to chill out if you experience unexpected results.

Good luck and let us know how it works for you.

I am real sorry to hear about your travails...so unnecessary....

ardent should send you a second unit to try...sound like a defective timer, heater, something. This should not be.

Personally, I’ve always preferred low-scale and low-tech, but even so, decarboxylation seems really easy for some to overthink (not a swipe @M1ndf1r3). example from your comment about FB(?) saying Lift is “tuned to making THC”, which is bullshit. Decarboxylation is cooking: x degrees for y long, and done.

If you want to test your lift again, I suggest only running 7g thru it, and giving the other qtr your usual treatment so you can compare results.

That's the thing I've tried running 3.5g through it and infused into 100ml of extra virgin olive oil to be taken sublingually. This oil was weak as hell too. The info about the nova being tuned for THC came from talking to Ardent support via FB. They said basically the lab they worked with enabled them to refine the process so that THC is obtained without further decarb. They suggested that the process involving the oven may end up producing some levels of CBN with the THC which they said if I'm not getting much effect from the nova decarbed material I probably need in an entourage effect style. This is actual advice by them. They said to try running half of the batch through it twice to create CBN and then infuse them combined... Like I said, I've done a few oven decarbs at 120 Celsius for half hour and each one of those infusions using the same techniques have ended up nothing short of lethal! I may as well be infusing from male plants using the Nova..

Since you’ve only used the lift since you got it, you need a control: you need to *verify* that the weed you’re getting is still giving your old results with your old technique, isolating the failure to the Ardent unit.

Very sorry to say, it sounds like Ardent has at least one person spouting BS: THC begins to convert to CBN before all the THCA converts to THC, so they’ve picked a ‘magic number’; ‘entourage effect‘ has to do the COMBINED effects of the cannabinoids and other components, *NOT* with CBN. Overcooking is by far a bigger risk than ‘the decarb cycle failing’ if you’re heater is working at all...frankly, a grilled cheese sandwich is harder to make than a good decarb batch if you know what you’re doing with time and temperature.

Sounds to me like the heater is defective, could be running to hot for too long...’cause by all reports CBN isn’t psychoactive, and you DON’T want to convert things into it.

Your initial tech seems good: good heat target, limited duration, and your results proved worthy; unless your weed has changed , you should be getting as good results as before - and THEY should have told you that, not *me*. I don’t think you can finagle your methods to overcome this. They should stop bullshitting you and send you a replacement unit. If performance in the replacement doesn’t measure up, they should refund your money without hesitation.

Lou has given good advice. Agree 100%!

Just curious, did you purchase the silicone sleeve they’re hawking? If you did, DON’T use it. In spite of the bullshit they’re pushing, this sleeve is a game changer. I’m convinced it can radically change the decarb process. Silicone has a low thermal conductivity, which means that it transfers heat at a low rate compared to other materials. In other words, it’s insulative! I fail to see how you could possibly obtain comparable results when doing a decarb with the sleeve versus without it.

I have a small silicone measuring cup that I've used in lieu of the cost Ardents to try. I only use it with rosin for spatters.

I also wondered how it would work, but it does. I'm also willing to bet my cup is thicker than the OEM version too.

Maybe some pics pre and post decarb, color change may help with determining if it's over or under heating?

Thanx for sharing, MonkeyTime.

I don’t have one of the sleeves and may be all wet with my thesis. It appears the sleeve fits pretty snugly into the aluminum cup. With the heating elements and heat sensors embedded in the walls and/or bottom of the unit, it just seems that the silicone would impede the consistent transfer of heat to the material. But who knows; maybe it’s magic!!

Maybe our bud here has the misfortune of having received a faulty device. Hopefully he can verify the problem and have it remedied post haste. I consider the nova the most overpriced, poorest quality essential tool in my apothecary cabinet!!

I realize this is a month since the last post here but I wanted to say the silicon sleeve isn't for decarbing. It's for making oil infusions after you already decarbed your herb without the sleeve in your Lift/Nova.
I got mine because I don't want to stink up my place and I think it's awesome. it's really convenient for me especially since I also use said silicon sleeve for coconut oil and butter infusions. Handy dandy. It's cool that Ardent includes info about rates of infusion using various oilS. I pretty much use coconut oil full time for what I make but the options are interesting. I don't have much experience decarbing or infusing butter other ways, and I probably wouldn't at all without mine. It just wouldn't be practical for me any other way.
Also, @MonkeyTime your arsenal of vapes is fantastic! How do you settle on the Mighty when you have so so many to choose from? What a great problem to have!

I gave up most of my hobbies as the kids were growing up, this one snuck in towards the end and I had money that u could afford in this area, I feel very lucky! The Mighty is just too easy, consistent and delivers. I've tried to replace it and the MV has come close, but can't quite manage to make me put it away. Most get rotated, the Mighty is almost always in the group being used.

It's about time to busy or the Nova and make some more caramels!

Hey everyone

Do any of you know how to get rid os the smell from the silicone cover? Im referring to the herb smell after I used the nova/lift to decarb. I did about three 7g loads and the cover smells like fresh herbs. Nice smell but not discreet. Don’t want the neighbors to complain.

Thanks

Are you sure it’s a cannabis smell? Is it new? Many of us had stinky lids from the factory processing, supposedly. I still think it was an ingredient that was used in the makeup of the lid. Time did eventually take care of it. I soaked mine repeatedly in a weak dawn/water solution and ran it through several dishwasher cycles. Helped some but wasn’t a total cure. After all the washing attempts, I tightly wrapped the lid in aluminum foil and still use it that way to date. The terrible smell was actually getting into my weed while decarbing. I did call and complain and was sent a new lid that stunk worse than the original!

Good luck

Yes it is a weed smell, when I put the unit away when not in use inside the original round box. It smells like a fresh bag of weed. So far I have not notice the chemical smell everyone else is referring too. I have tried soaking in vinegar and water and also covering the lid in baking soda. Just want to be low key and not having people know about it.

IME, the weed smell coming off the silicone lid is pretty strong after use but dissipates. I tried once to clean it with dish soap but the weed smell was just replaced by a dish soap smell so I don't bother anymore. I wipe off any moisture, let it air dry, then stow it in the Nova, where I don't notice the smell.

I have tried this method twice in the past week and I've not experienced anything approximating a game changer aside from a light buzz. Here's what I did: bud decarbed in the Nova, then finely ground. I filled the long end of a size 1 gelcap with the powder and about 6 drops of MCT oil. I let it sit for a few hours and then I swallowed two of the capsules. I felt very little effect after 90 minutes and then a slight trippy effect, but that was it.

The bud is of reasonably decent quality, it's the same bud that would have me soaring if used for firecrackers. I would love for this method to work for me. Any suggestions as to what could make this a real game changer as you describe? thanks alot.

update: great success! with a bamboo skewer (flat end) i pushed more material into each cap plus more than double the original amount of oil, let sit to saturate and it's quite nice. everybody try this. it has a different quality not having been baked into anything. and thank you very much boocoodinkydow.

I’ve recently been forgoing the gelcap and MCT oil. In a pinch one day, I just licked my finger and dipped into the ground powder (best to do this prior to picking your nose or scratching your ass) and licked it off. I’ve found it an even better experience with less material.

I'm debating on buying this unit since it's the holiday season and such but I don't mind using the oven for decarb and think maybe purchasing an infusing machine or even an instant pot might be better overall?

I don't like the idea of any kind of silicone smell and for the price of this unit there shouldn't be any kinks in this product at all......What's the current consensus on this unit?

The first 20 pages of this thread had a lot of complaints.......bad silicone smell, tin foil the lid to prevent it, infusion process not working properly, defective units etc?

I'm going more into the non inhalation route for delivery so I'm really wanting to make tinctures properly and easily!

@Truth Seeker, my feeling is if the product is universally bad there would be a consensus. There obviously isn't anything close to that. Some people just like their way better, and some people just hate new things. The first 20 pages ended over a year ago, and I have to believe it has been updated and improved since it came out. I for one like mine it's convenient and fast and I use it to infuse with the silicon sleeve AND lid. Nobody including me has ever noticed a small or taste in anything I made in it. Not saying others aren't more sensitive, but don't fall for the mob hate mentality. I got lots of information with mine but it's all on their website. For me the convenience and discreteness are huge. I'm also inexperienced with other methods of decarb and infusion. This checked both boxes at one time.
