There are instructions in the manual for lining up markings on the tempest with the glass insert of the wand. Even if the tempest is sitting as deep into the wand as the markings suggest, the bowl will still be a few cm above the induction coils, so I doubt it heats directly.

I would not recommend anything by storz and bickel if "easy on the throat is a top priority". Either go for some form of ball vape like tempest or Angus enhanced, or if you prefer conduction you have the bakx (haven't tried it though).
