When I'm using it on the stem, I keep it open about 1/3. If I think of it when I put it on glass, I usually close it a little more but if I forget to change it it still works well enough about 1/3 open.

I don't have a Tempest wooden sleeve yet, but I have been effectively using a revolve one recently. The Tempest Head has a lot more mass than a vapcap tip so it's not a surprise that it has a lot more heat to shed and that will go to the stem if it has no other place to go and can't radiate it...
