Nope, shouldn't be any noticeable difference in temp or taste between Ash and Maple Dogs. Maple has a smoother finish while Ash has a more contrasting grain pattern so they each have their pluses and minuses style wise but not functionally.

Oh man, sorry to hear that Fred. If you look in the plug there's a little metal flap that is supposed to press in towards the center pin and I bet it's gotten pushed away and is making the connection loose. If you can carefully bend it back towards the center a bit it'll tighten things back up...
