'Burnt popcorn' taste is from overheated herb. If you do get that from a PD it is because a crumb of herb has fallen into the Heat Exchanger (where it's not supposed to be) and is against the resistor and is overheating. Turn the unit over and tap it out. Generally loads that are tamped lightly...

I haven't put the wrong end in my mouth... yet. ;) Somewhere in this long thread, Toofat, I compared the resistor to the engine and the heat exchanger to the radiator, so that is how I look at it too. Nice explanation of why you need both surface area and mass.
