It depends on how much you use it! Personally I like to scrape my stems out every eighth of an ounce or so. Sometimes I get more than an eighth of a strain and will clean it when I am done with the strain. Some materials are more resinous!

I've noticed small small amounts of (herbal) material build up on the threads and get crushed/flake off from use. Would be good to give it a good clean if planning on traveling with them.
