@blokenoname Yep, I'll put clipring in there for good measure.
The gouge tools are pretty basic.
This one's about as basic as it gets - a modified piece of coat-hanger wire!
Then there's the the expensive version...
If I can find the right parts I'll make a delux height-adjustable...
Finished this beta unit today. Ran it for 10 hours prior to sealing up the base and inserting the washer
over the heater cover retaining screws. A local friend of mine said he'd test a unit for me so it'll be
the first one to go out into the wild .
The washer down there is a M8x25mm...
I came across a link to this thread in a @phattpiggie post on the HGL thread.
(Btw, @RastaVapa all the very best mate, wherever you are and whatever you're doing).
Before and after pictures of logs is such a great idea I thought it'd be fun to add some imput and
perhaps even revive the thread...
Got that 'rustic' finished a week ago and it's been my daily driver since then. Working fine so far :).
The main concern was that, once plugged in, the heater-accelerated drying might split the wood but
that would probably have happened by now if it was going to.
Unfortunately, you can't...
Thx bloke.
Ordered myself a decent set of circlip pliers and will just have to man-up about the drilling :uhoh:
A very kind neighbour has loaned me his bench saw. I was having a lot of trouble getting a straight cut on the handrail so all my blanks were looking like mini towers of Pisa -...
Getting close to a viable unit now, mate
And none of it would have been possible without this thread :clap::)
@FlyHi
I've got several pages of A4 covered in notes and sketches to help with this process of log construction.
Nearly all of it taken from this thread. Pretty much...
Got the heater cover finished today which meant that all components were ready for
final assembly into a working log.
That washer down there came with the jack plug connector. I put it in the vice and squashed
it to a better size. Not the most elegant example of craftmanship I know, but...
H FlyHi
Great to hear that you're doin' the DIY jive
(to the music of KC and the Sunshine Band according to @ubardog ):D
Here's the wire I'm using.
The site offers a range of diameters - I went for the 0.9mm.
But I guess bloke will be along soon to advise you on that and also on the ss...
Yea, I'll certainly use the higher temp solder.
Anything that adds to safety and durability has got to be better.
Heater position is straightforward and single 9mm tube is likewise.
Thanks on that
I'm still scouring the internet for suitable ss tubing. Very little 9mm out there...
How about...
Manfred Mann - Blinded by the Light. 1977.

Or anything by ELO ??
A previous attempt to build a desktop vape about four years ago, sadly, did not end in success.
The heat source on that project was a halogen bulb. However, it's an...
Thanks for the info, bloke
A longer leg on one side for coiling around the resistor makes good sense. It does look bit short.
Possibly more spacing between the coils too, to make it a bit thinner?
Lucky I only bought 50cm of that solder and not a whole spool.
Thanks for the link. I'll...
The new solder arrived so watched Tom PD's vid and a couple of others. Practiced on some spare wire
first then soldered the extension wire to the resistor.
Yet another new skill this project has taught me :)
It's not shown in the photo but there's now 7cm of wire on one side and...
Many thanks for the useful centering advice, bloke
Also, glad I checked with you on the solder before using it. You saved me some wasted time there .
Will put in an order for the higher temp stuff today.
Got 3 x 30cm lengths of oak from this site on ebay - enough for about nine stems.
They do say "un-sanded" and they ain't joking :o
My advice is don't handle them without gloves until you've given them a good sanding.
Bought some of that silver plated copper wire that you mentioned in an...
Oak 12.5mm (1/2 inch) doweling rods arrived yesterday so I drilled out an 8cm length.
Countersunk at one end by 1cm with the 8mm bit to hold a ss tip.
Very difficult to centre and drill accurately down the middle - but if you photo it from the right
angle you can almost disguise that ;)...
Well, after much strenuous testing:science::science:, here’s my review of the latest Misty log vape.
Friday, January 11th - tracking info indicated immanent arrival of the new oak Misty. Pm’d Bloke: “…the runway’s clear and the landing lights are on” - and it’s been my daily driver since it...
This is a literally brilliant concept  Follow the light !
Does it work OK with a dd stem ? Or is the bulb too bright ?
I imagine it could dramatically illuminates a bubbler
Well, look what the postman brought me this morning :D
A log builder's kit
Drilled and undrilled blanks for me to mess about with, ss tubing (two different diameters), a variety of washers and cliprings and a complete heater cover
It's yet another fine display of Bloke's...
The big event chez brainiac this week was the arrival on Wednesday of the drill press.
Finished assembling and setting it up yesterday and.. switched it on today :D
Had some pine handrail/mopstick ready cut into blanks so I got out the forstner bits and 'had a go' :uhoh:
Took great care...
