Whilst I haven't used a glass bat, I would only use my coil with glass expansion of some sort. I seem to remember the end of a glass bat is also shaped to fit a glass joint and a quick google search may confirm that?

No it isn't. If everything is clean and functional, hot spots are user error. It could be any combination of over-loaded/tamped the bowl, flame running too hot/long or inhalation speed not matching the lighter and load size.

I'd consider a jet flame mandatory for good results. As long as you don't run it too close I feel like it actually gives more margin for error than candle flame lighters. The even, steady flame on a jet seems much easier to aim and hold at a consistent distance away from the ceramic. I also...
