If you plan on smoking the reclaim anyway, like myself, I don't mind it. I don't think the reclaim gets hot enough to vaporize and enter your rig. As you said, it protects the rig from excess heat but it just makes it easier to collect reclaim. Also helps keep your rig cleaner for longer periods of time. After one session, my rig looks clean while the dropdown looks like it's been through a lot.
