Mine is a new one and it does this too. I can turn it down from max to 3 o'clock and it'll still stay green, but anything past 3 and it'll switch to red.

I've never noticed the metal taste either, with both my old ticking unit that ran hot and my new non-ticking unit. Maybe it's the screws you use to stir the bowl that impart the metallic taste?
