Hey that coil cover should be flipped over and covering the coils I do believe. Seems like it's intended to catch the heat the coil is throwing off the back side so the unit can heat up quicker/retain heat better in use.

Sounds like what I was experiencing. Set it to 800, wait 10 minutes and then adjust down to what you want to took care of it for me. That nail assembly needs a few minutes for a good heat soak. Also get a screen and bend it like in my picture a few posts up in the thread. Works like a charm...
