I dig my ambit, beta unit and no issues. It is certainly capable of charring if your temp is set too high. Simply adjust down degree by degree and fine tune to your liking. I've not changed my temp button in months

In that price range, I'd recommend the ambit or a dynavap m.

Could be any number of things... Without pics, I'd guess nothing to be concerned of. Are you using a timer or a temp gun on your nail when you torch? It will really help you dial in the ideal temps. Sounds like you dropped the dab after the nail had cooled too much. Likely got a tasty dab...

Also try different draw techniques. Pull that first draw long and hard like you are trying to start a hookah. pull until hard and you will find an awesome first draw.
