regarding sleeves, I've gone both ways but tend to use without for it feels slightly smaller in my pocket. BUT I do find sleeves add a noteworthy layer of protection and insulation against falls/drops/hits.

I'd typically just de-stem something like that pic above. You don't so much have to smush to fit more, just break up into smaller pieces that fit/pack better.
