I can't say from experience but the question has been asked before and I THINK the answer was that the cap will discolor a little bit but not nearly as much as it does with flame. I'm sure someone will come along and verify this.

With cheap butane lighters, the problem is often the fuel. I use 5x filtered and it worked pretty well, even in cheaper lighters. Try emptying the fuel (from the filling point) and re-fill with a better fuel. Just tossing that out. Might not be it.
