Can't speak to the "necessary" or not, but both my ShowerDome and my HydraLine HTs do not contact the metal. Even inverted on my Mobius Ion it doesn't contact the metal. All seal well too.

I thought about trying a high temp o-ring at the base of the male glass joint. Thought it would provide a seal against water going inside and a buffer between the metal and glass. But I coulodn't figure out just how hot the top metal might get so wasn't sure what material o-ring to look for...
