It's a 5mm LED. The yellow one I have fitted in the red spot is a 3mm. The bamboo doesn't get hot on the bottom but I don't think it touches. I love how bright it is. It really lights up the tube.

3 volts. I figure the circuit was meant to have the LEDs so I just swapped them out. I've ordered some cool color changing ones so we'll see how that turns out. The one picture I snapped of my work... *edit* A little research tells me red LEDs only want 2 volts so I should have put my meter...

I replaced the reg/green leds with some others I had lying around. It went smooth so I think I'll order some cool colors. :)
