Might that have been resin? There has been a lot of discussion about cleaning the resin ring that builds up inside the lip at the bottom of the joint, I've seen little resin ticks along that lip, too. Aw, you poor thing. If you haven't yet, try that Ion with a CloudBuddy - it rocks!

Do you by chance stir with the ELB in the Cloud? That'll do it for sure. Anyway, I'm not particularly concerned about the vents. There are not-difficult ways to mitigate any ABV from reaching the unit's internals and making it easy to keep clear of debris.

I didn't ask because of loose ABV, although that is an excellent question. My reason is - wait for it now - there is yet another complaint that I forgot to mention before, oops. That complaint was that the shell halves sometimes did not line up precisely, so that the seam was a tiny bit off...

Yes. But IME at least squeezing the 2 caps together results in slight pinching of the top cap such that it is not a tight fit if used later with an ELB in the regular fashion. Not that it is unusable, just a tad loose. So I've reserved the ELB/caps set for double-capping just for that...
