I always prefer fruit woods for any vape device. They've been popular choices for pipe makers for years as they're food safe. As for air holes I've always preferred them all open as intended. I tried blocking them but found it took away from the beautiful vape signature of the piece.

As someone who vapes i still think there's a lot to be said for a nice dry sift. Full melts are obviously killer and proper freeze dried hash rosin is nice if you dab. But a nice well made dry sift can be so true to the flower, increasing the flavour and effects
