There is indeed a wood flavor present when using one of Ed's Stems. I for one thoroughly enjoyed it. It starts to fade after several loads have gone through it. And then slowly goes away completely once the vapor resin fills the pores of the wood... I miss it now LOL As far as burning...

Some units, the newer ones, have a battery indicator built in that shows by different color lights as soon as you start the unit or plug it in. Older units do not have the indicator though. Turn your unit on and then check what the lights do before they start flashing to warm up to level. Or...
