Eating ABV - trip report.

I've been a lurker here for a little while. I am a 50-something that has been reacquainted with an old lost love - MJ. :) And there has been an awful lot to learn about weed having been on hiatus for the last 25 years. Vaporizing weed was one of the new learning curves. I got a PAX, which my wife and I both use, although she's had problems recently with bronchitis and the vaporizer seems to make it worse. While doing some googling and research I ran across a couple reports of people eating their vaporized weed and getting good results from it.

The weed I've been vaporizing has been quite good bud from medicinal suppliers. I saved the remains of three vaporizer packs with it and ordered some 00 gel caps from Amazon at about 12 bucks for a thousand. When I vape, I grind with the flite-box finish grinder, so the vape contents are pretty finely powdered. I scooped up the remains into the capsules and ended up filling 5 capsules with enough left over for probably one more. Figure 2 capsules per spent load of AVB in the Pax.

So my wife played guinea pig and ate the 5 capsules. I'd read that one must be careful not to eat too much because getting too high wasn't a very nice experience, but since the weed had already been vaporizeded and since I wasn't mixing it with oil or cooking it or doing anything but loading some gel-caps to get it right on down, we were hoping there might be some medicinal effect. If not, we hadn't really lost anything.

An hour into it and she said she was feeling pretty good, but couldn't tell if she was just in good spirits or if the capsules were having some effect. An hour and a half into it and she was quite giggly and happy and couldn't focus but wanted to do something creative and set up to do some water color painting. That was about as far as she got with that before she told me that she was feeling really, REALLY stoned. Within a couple minutes, the munchies set in and she was surfing the counters and cabinets for something to stuff in her mouth. I shared some Jack's links that I had laying around and she had some chips while we scrapped plans to make dinner and just fired up the oven for a frozen pizza.

By the time the pizza was done, 30 minutes later, she was totally couch locked and damned near immobile. She ate all but the last piece of the pizza. At that point, she mumbled something with half closed eyes about being really high and that it didn't feel good. The next 6 hours were, according to my wife, a very unpleasant experience. She said she felt like she might forget to breathe and die. She felt like we watched 8 different movies with only 8 frames of each movie showing and she couldn't keep track of anything going on and couldn't move. Basically, she ended up damned near catatonic drifting out to sleep only briefly a few times but never being really "conscious" in any sense of the word I can think of. She was barely responsive and even her facial muscles weren't moving.

So after that, we talked about it a good bit and here's the fallout.

1. If that had been her first experience, she would be VERY put off by the idea of ever trying marijuana again.

2. She'll wait a few days before giving it another go and next time, she'll try ONE capsule instead of the 5. It's way, WAY better to err on the side of caution here.

3. She has a pretty low resistance, so it might have just been one hell of an awesome high for someone with a very high tolerance but the warning about erring on the side of caution still seems to be paramount. The stuff won't kill you but it can sure take you well beyond your comfort zone.

4. ABV might be more potent if it's been merged with oil based products like butter or coconut oil but it's damned potent just eating it straight.

5. The capsules were a great idea because they made it easy, fast and I think the dosing is a lot easier that way. At least in theory it seems easier to dose by capsule than by figuring out how strong the cannabutter and cooked goodies end up being. They're compact and probably will store damned near indefinitely since the ABV is cooked and dried.

6. I'll definitely be recycling my vaped weed from now on. I can't believe how much I've thrown out over the last 4 months. I kick myself a little bit every time I think of it.

7. I'll repeat the part about erring on the side of caution. I have never done edibles and only have gone on my own experience as a former hardcore stoner, i.e. you can't get too high. I've re-evaluated that little tidbit of "wisdom" after last night.

Anyway, that's the experience and though I'd share it with you guys. It's the least I can do for all the good information I've scoured from these forums.

Cheers!

Sounds like it was pretty harsh, but damn 5 capsules was too much to start with! You would be pretty surprised how powerful abv still is.

Yeah. Ignorance isn't always bliss, is it?! And Yes, I was VERY surprised at how powerful abv is.

But one thing I learned and forgot to mention. I've been smoking quite a bit rather than vaping and this has made vaporizing my go-to method now because ABV is potent medicine and ashes are... well.... just ashes.

Great post, and.....................welcome.

Thanks, Iwien. I am really hoping that weed is legalized all over the states soon. It's decriminalized here but it's still a damned good idea to stay in the closet with it.

For me, I've never felt that way.

I didn't think I'd ever feel that way about it, either, but after ending up working at the headquarters of one of the largest global corporations, discretion became very important for the sake of my career. Everything was SOOOOO politically correct there. Now that I work for myself as an artisan craftsman, life is so different in all the right ways. Now looking back, I feel like I sold out in some ways, but maybe it was just a matter of paying dues. I don't know. I'm just very happy with life again now and I wasn't for many years.

I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to, too
Nice one.

I make a mean AVB budder and coconut oil.

I don't know why I've never thought of making up caps before.

Will give it a go over xmas.

Thanks

Stupid question, am I correct in assuming AVB is pretty sterile as apposed to NBV (my term just invented it ;))

NVB? Would that be Non-Vaped-Bud? LOL. :) I think the brown stuff coming out of the pax is pretty well toasted and I can't imagine any microorganisms being happy with after enduring 10-15 minutes of being vaporized in the PAX. :) I suppose with NBV, there's always potential for some sort of bacteria being resident, particularly if the growing media was organic (eating weed contaminated with manure might not kill you, but I think it would be risky). I feel the ABV is about as sterile as bread crumbs. :)

I used my ABV once to make oil (1/2 cup mixed with 1/2 cup veggie oil) and then used that oil after it marinated for a week to make brownies, and I will say they were WAY too powerful, I had to cut the brownies in half, and even then I would only eat half of that half and feel nice.

Now I have to try caps (my fiance has a box full for her essential oils)

Best advice I can give for anyone who's interested in edibles is to invest in an scale that's accurate to fractions of a gram. For an average person with an average tolerance, I'd say a dose of 1 gram ABV (or NBV) might even be too much. I'll do 4g into a tray of 16 brownies, that's 1/4g per dose. Most people feel some effect off that amount. I purposefully like to make my brownies weak enough that I can eat a second or third and not get launched into outer space.

I go with 2 to 2.5 gr of ABV and my low tolerance is legendary. :)

Besides our own personal body chemistries, a lot of this has to do with how dark your ABV is before consuming it. Mine is a dark coffee brown.

It has a lot to do with tolerance, but also factors like digestion and so on. Edibles is a complex field, and the high of edibles are like a canna/shroom hybrid and THEN some. I love it, but it is not like having some tokes. Experienced stoners fuck them selves up on edibles all the time.

I had a very important meeting yesterday, and I needed to be relaxed and calm. I ate two big spoons of lecithin- and ABV-infused coconut oil (I usually make caps, but I was out), which would knock a lot of people out. But for me it only relaxes me.

If I had eaten the same oil made from fresh material, I would've been in the same state as your wife. I would probably react different, because I know the high, and how to handle it, but I would be in no fit state to do anything but sit and eat.

The reasons I could eat the oil before a meeting is:

a. I've done a lot of edibles, so I know how my body and mind react to them
b. I've been enjoying this oil for some months, so I know very well how I react to that particular oil. Also I made it.
c. I also vaped all the bud that went into it, so I know what strains, and also how dark the ABV was. I could tell for certain that it would not get me high-high, just smiling with good musclerelaxing and antistress/agression effects.

Also I would recommend making oil out of the abv, to stretch it. Maybe a couple of drops under the tongue is enough?

Read up on edibles, it's really fun, but only when you go into it prepared to get higher then you've ever been :)

As it says on the cover of the Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy:

DON'T PANIC

Good luck, and welcome to FC :)

Hi- also new here but have been a lurker for some time...

I've tried several ways of using AVB in food but have never experienced any strong effects. The last time I ate 8g and the effects were so mild they were barely registered. The times previous to that I felt nothing at all.

I think I must be vaping out all the goodness first.

My goodness; 8g of ABV edibles would last me a whole week! Everyone's tolerance is different, I guess.

It's true that ABV already has most of the THC removed during the vaping process, so you shouldn't expect a strong "head high." But you should be experiencing other cannabinoids giving you a sleepy/drowsy/relaxed feeling. Did you get any of those sensations?

Out of curiosity, what method(s) are you using? Just throwing the ABV in to the food? Extracting to butter or oil? Did you use lecithin? What cooking times and temperatures? etc.

A good science project for you might be to make edibles using NBV (non-vaped bud, aka green bud) to see if you feel an effect from that. This ought to give you a MUCH stronger "head high" than ABV (if that's what you're looking for). If you don't feel anything from 8g of NBV (an incredibly high dose in my universe!!) then you might just be one of those people who just doesn't metabolize edibles.

It's not just a tolerance thing. One can have a VERY low tolerance to vaping bud but they may NEVER get high from edibles regardless how much ABV they use simply because their livers may lack the enzymes necessary to convert delta-THC into 11-hydroxy THC.

Also, it's not a black or white issue. The ability for ones liver to make that conversion is graduated so while tolerance does play a part, the ability of your liver to convert that THC is just as impactful if not more so.

It is these unknowns that suggest that those who take edibles for the first time, do so with very small doses and make adjustments to those dosages until they find out what works for...........them.

Again, tolerance is but one part of the equation here.

Some people do that; other people (like me) extract the ABV into coconut oil and lecithin...

I've been putting the AVB with coconut oil /butter mix or coconut oil /corn oil mix, on a low heat for a while (tried different cooking times - but figured it doesn't really need decarbing as its been vaped) then cooking in brownie mix, putting in cake or just putting the AVB/butter mix onto toast.

The first batch of brownies had a little over 1oz of medium-brown AVB using the above method (it made about 12 brownies) and felt nothing, even after eating loads of them.

The last time, with the 8g I put the butter mix on toast, and felt a very mild effect in my body, but it lasted about an hour at most.

I've certainly had good effects from ingesting it in the past - one time I simply heated a bud in a spoonfull of butter and mixed it into a pot of yoghurt, and was bombed for hours. :)

Oatmeal...thats awesome haha

This worked out REALLY well:

Recipe:

Bring to boil 1 cup of either soy milk, regular milk or almond milk (I use soy) and 1/2 cup of water.
Pour in 1/2 cup of steel cut oatmeal.

Simmer for 25 to 30 minutes with intermittent stirring to desired thickness.....uncovered.

While simmering, slice up one banana into empty bowl. Add in a handful of either 10 large blackberries or a couple handfuls of blueberries. Sprinkle in a teaspoon or two of cinnamon.

When oatmeal has reached desired thickness, add in 2 grams of ABV (my ABV is a chocolate brown color) to oatmeal in pot, and stir............immediately remove from heat and pour oatmeal/abv mixture over the banana's/berries and cinnamon. Sprinkle on top a handful or two chopped walnuts.
Toss and stir to mix things up.

Enjoy........Not only did it get me totally blitzed within an hour and kept me there for another six, it's a really healthy AND a tasty way to get there.

Bottom line.....you don't need to either heat up your abv nor do you need to mix it in with food that has a high fat content.
