IMO, we'll always need people who enforce the laws we collectively decide on as a society. But I don't think "more training" really covers it. We need a page 1 re-write on how we do law enforcement in this country.

In many cases, we can offload some things we ask cops to handle to mental health professionals or social workers. Funny enough, that's what "defund the police" was always about. Using some of our massive police budgets to offload work to social workers where appropriate.

But more importantly: cops don't even claim to prevent crime. They're job is to solve crimes after the fact. Something they accomplish around 25% of the time.

If we want to reduce crime, we need to improve the material conditions of citizens. People who aren't facing desperate circumstances are less likely to commit crimes. People with good paying careers doing something valuable to society are even less likely to do so.
Whaaaaat? People who have what they need to survive are less likely to resort to drastic measure to survive????? Next you're gonna tell me that cops don't even have to protect and serve, and that they have additional protection against breaking the law despite being the ones who should be most scrutinized as those in power!

In the US, state / local Law Enforcement Organizations (LEOs) enjoy something called 'qualified immunity'. If an action was committed, they're generally off the hook / untouchable. This varies by state ('blue' states will prosecute faster for documented misdeeds; 'red' ones generally shield the bad cops, especially if there is a racial component involved; aka: 'open season on people of color'.)

Federal LEOs used to adhere to the higher 'blue' standard, but after seeing them tackle, cuff and remove a sitting US Senator today (who have specifically protected free speech rights under the Constitution), that looks to be pretty much gone as a guardrail of US jurisprudence, now. Should be pretty easy to find the video on US-based media today.

Next up will be what happens on Saturday, in California, Texas & DC, amongst other places. Saturday looks to be a very interesting day to see what is left of Rule of Law in this country, with 1800 distinct protests scheduled across the country (and more across Europe, in solidarity, etc.) By nightfall, those US locations (or all 'blue' states, etc.) could be under martial law. Hopefully not, but people have been expecting this for awhile, now.

Supposedly, the weather forecast calls for > 85% chance of strong thunderstorms in the area, getting worse as the day progresses.

I've also seen reported that there's an ad in the DC Craigslist offering $1000 payment per person, to attend along the parade route.

Coin flip as to whether he wears the same old blue suit / red tie, or dresses in something a little more... fitting for the occasion.
(joking here, but barely).

The reports that I have seen say that he was released after he identified himself and later had a private conversation with Noem. So not quite what you are suggesting.

When I posted that, I didn't yet know that he had been released. Which was fine, for their propagandistic purposes while ICE Barbie stood in front of the camera. They claimed not to know who he was. Don't believe that. He identified himself when he started speaking.

As for what *did* happen...
- He was tackled, after being shoved out of the room
- He was handcuffed
- He was removed from the facility

All of those things are on video; I did not make them up, and they are irrefutable.

The point is that he should not have been touched.
Here is the Speech and Debate clause from the US Constitution

Article I, Section 6, Clause 1:

The Senators and Representatives shall receive a Compensation for their Services, to be ascertained by Law, and paid out of the Treasury of the United States. They shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place.

The following explains (with cites) about how this section has been interpreted over the last 250 years to provide protection from the executive, so that what happened to Sen. Padilla today would NOT happen, under our laws. Understanding the Speech and Debate Clause
