Do you guys prefer these stands with the heat shields?

I tend to like something more simple and minimal but if everyone prefers the extra safety of a full shroud that could be accounted for.
i do personally, thats why i passed on those sweet bubbletrap CC stands. In the picture of my desk above my cat regularly walks within inches of the hot coils and no trouble so far!

I always prefer a heat shield just because cats and clumsy hands. I can’t think of any downsides to having one and only benefits also makes me more comfortable keeping it on 24/7.

I've never seen the need for a heat shield stand personally, but if the footprint is small enough I don't see a problem having one. I do have a shield installed on my 25mm coil that's waiting for the zxxl, but that kinda sits over the rest of my vape station and would be dangerous without it. For my zx, I still use one of those cheap glass stands with the female joint and it's never been an issue for me.

the Terp Ready does not. The Frieght Train is the one that comes with a heat shield.
I thought the Terp Ready did have one, doesn't it?

What if you made a bowl that is wired but fits a bowl inside that is wireless. Wireless bowl only holds enough heat for one hit but you can lift the carrier bowl with the rider wireless to do back to back hits.

With the low profile, a double decker with small bowl could be cool but maybe someone has thought of it!

Does the Oldhead Terp-Ready have a heat shield? I'm going to use that.
I'm not sure what the total weight is on the ZXXL heater head. I'm thinking possibly that the weight of the heater head could cause the Terp Ready to be a little wobbly but maybe not. I thouht about using the Terp Ready for the heat stand a while back but didn't want to part with the money that the Terp Ready go's for. So instead I purchased the O'Connel heat stand holder from the OCW web site and a 25 mm coil from vgoodiez to with the OCW heat stand. And then after I purchased the O'Connell heat stand the wireless dock station by Crossing Tech came out shortly after so I purchased that as well. I will wait to decide as to which one to use when the zxxl finally arrives. Right now I'm thinking the lower center of gravity thus making for a more stable base would be the Crossing Tech as opposed to the taller O'Connell heat stand. I tested the O'Connell heat stand out with just a 25 mm banger and it works great for that and much less money than the Terp Ready.

My zx adventure:

The zx gained my interest a couple of years ago. I liked the idea of a zirconia/ceramic vape for pure taste and the one man band appealed to me. Ryan seemed a genuine guy.
But I kept finding reasons not too and then the prices went up a bit (vape makers have gotta eat) so I cursed myself for my stupidity.
Then Ryan discounted the zx for a bit. I had it in the basket. Even exchanged a few emails with Ryan. But life got in the way and I missed the discount window. Bugger.
Then a few weeks ago a zx became available on leboncoin, a french exchange site. Bit expensive so I held off. But the seller discounted it for 4:20 ( I also doubt he got much interest. LBC mainly full of volcanos or mightys etc) and so a deal was done.

I received the zx and coil, original bowl with single position, the glass bowl, the hanger and 50 screens. It wasn't cheap but I got a decent saving and avoided import duties etc. so I was happy. I sold a few vapes to help cover the costs so the boss was happy too!
Soon it arrived. I quickly plugged it in and boom. Wow.
This bad boy is fantastic. I grow my own and some of my output can be a tad lacking in the terps. But this thing somehow manages to bring out the best in whatever I throw at it. And anything that has a lot of terps can bring on the sneezes (skunk fever we call it!).
It shines as a one hit wonder which is what I wanted. Get the loading and temp right and no clean up hit required.
It milks the glass near instantly. A bowl of .15 is finished with one inhale easily. i love the look and design. The signs that Ryan is a true vape engineer are obvious. Why have a handle on the bowl when a couple of o rings will do the job. Simple and effective and nothing to break. How the head and bowl seamlessly couple together providing a solid seal. Such precision.

My only gripe is this thing is supposed to reduce herb consumption as it is so efficient.
Not so.
This thing is so tasty it demands to be hit again and again. I keep finding new taste profiles and to ensure I didn't just imagine this, I have another hit. I haven't had a single dab since I received this, that's how good it is!
I admit this is a 'me' problem and one I need to get in control as my tolerance will creep up again! But I felt the need to raise it 🤪.

So I'm now finding myself coveting the zxl. I doubt I will wait this time and I suspect I will get in the pre order list asap. I need to know. Can the zx be improved upon. Time will tell.....

So well done @invertedisdead . You have created a beautiful and very effective vape.

For a while I did wonder if I would have been better off just getting a zx back in the day. But then I wouldn't have tried many ball vapes prior to the zx. And then I wouldn't have appreciated how good the zx is. So I'm actually glad I've spent money and time to get here. I'm comfortable in the knowledge that I don't suspect the zx is fantastic, I know.

For handle I came up with this, 14 ga copper wrapped around a tiny screwdriver shaft and vice grips holding the wire in place, I wrapped the shaft and pulled it out, then with the extra wire circled the bowl and wrapped it up. I was planning another idea but tried this one first. after using this the rubber rings feel so hot, the handle stays cool, can get warm by the bowl if your heat soaking it. but never gets hot or even very warm. so far its a free win.

this is a great idea, thanks for sharing! i appreciate the elegance of the z bowl but for me with the rings its difficult to clear with one hand when hot so i've been using a dropdown with a passthrough. this is a great option. also, i recently learned about drill stops! check them out, they are basically rings available in different sizes that have a threaded hole. if there was an imperial sized one that fits the OD of the z bowl you could also just screw a standard bowl handle in. there would be metal to zirconia contact. that would be a problem for glass, i'm not sure if it would be a problem with zirconia.

I just looked into drill stops based off your recommendation!
Made of steel and 16mm dimension.
Some even come in black and that would match the Z Bowl.
Cool idea.

That's what my original minimal stand idea was based around, but I wanted to do something a little more sleek with a built in recessed taper design.

But I never released this because I wasn't sure if this was too simple and maybe people were expecting to see something more elaborate.
I had ideas to do stuff with all this space to hold your tools and stuff, but in the end I found those designs a bit gaudy and over the top.

With the comments looking for more "safety" I had an idea to do a threaded stand, kind of inverted from the CH stand.

On mine the removable disc is threaded so that ZX or ZXL sized tapered discs could be installed and the same stand would work with either system.

In the photo you can see extra threads to move the disc up a little higher than the base of the safety shroud, adding an additional layer of insulation from the air gap underneath.

I have a bunch of other stand designs from over the years, maybe I'll look through them and post a few more.

Ryan are the next ZX’s shipping out this month or the next you think?

More like next month, sorry for the lag, I was really thinking I was going to have no downtime between the last batch and this batch of ZX's, but the random unexpected influx of 3 shelf bowl orders right towards the end shorted me on a bunch of plug & play kits that should have handled this downtime between batches.

What an awesome write up and a treat to read this morning my friend, thanks so much for giving the ZX a solid and proper go and I'm beyond stoked to hear that it's living up to its expectations and finding a warm home in your lineup!

The ZX is definitely my favorite dry herb vape and the one I'm always reaching for, I'm always stoked to see people still enjoying this design as I suppose it's a little bit "mature" for this constantly changing landscape :D that said every batch usually gets a minor little change here or there.

The upcoming ZXL also has a few little changes I think people are going to like ;)

Re: ZXL, I received the prices and they are confirmed good to go.

Just waiting a little bit to post the ZXL preorder because of this stand discussion; if there's interest in one/some of these stand ideas then I could add the ability to order that along with the ZXL.

For handle I came up with this, 14 ga copper wrapped around a tiny screwdriver shaft and vice grips holding the wire in place, I wrapped the shaft and pulled it out, then with the extra wire circled the bowl and wrapped it up. I'm glad you posted this for others to see as I thought this was a really cool DIY when you showed me in your email!

With the way I use the ZX I honestly don't feel like the Viton gets that warm, but I think this is a cool and practical solution for anyone that does.

I agree that heat soaking the bowl especially at higher temps (600F) can make the bowl rather warm, that's going a bit beyond the intended scope of the device but I do it occasionally, especially vaping rosin with my ZX so I do understand!

the only trick when i looked into them is that the metric ones (16mm, etc) may have metric threads in the hole so you might have to find the closest fitting imperial one to get imperial threads. If I recall, one of the metric sizes (m4? m5?) is close enough to the threaded handles that we use that it can be used.

That's what my original minimal stand idea was based around, but I wanted to do something a little more sleek with a built in recessed taper design.

I love that second one! the changeable disc is a great idea. tracking down titanium heatposts in certain sizes is a pita!
