The Toad from Morwood

Kind of random, but I always think of yours as the Totoro Toad. The Toadoro, if you will.

@cx714 i like that a lot! I can see where you make that connection. One of my favourite movies too, along with Howls Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, and one can never forget Spirited Away.

@UgoMailleIII not too too far off, but still a good distance away from me. This is the Interior of BC.

@lieutenantlemons has a very Miyazaki inspired sleeve on his Nomad, in case you haven’t seen it. :)

Thanks! The design came out way better than I could have ever hoped.

And funny you say that because I remember talking with Dan early on about giving this Nomad a "japanese forest" type of vibe. In fact, the design overall was very much inspired by Studio Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki films, specifically
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. :)

Happy to report that Nomad 059 will be in my hands soon enough and I'm super excited!

hey @Arawfish

I really like the photo of the Toad by the lake (or on the lake for that matter...)! what a nice place it must be to enjoy your new companion!

How do you find the performance?!
I find the learning curve very reasonable!
My first attempts with the simplest configuration - without glass beads - were successful.

I approached combustion several times with the addition of glass beads... since then I have temporarily removed them.

And since... my Toad and I have been getting to know each other more and more, always better! we are constantly improving!

I think I have partly solved my problem related to the fact that the draw is very open, without restriction. I think I have found a draw/airflow that suits me!

In my experience, preheating plays a big role. I count to 8 for the first puff and...it's delicious and really gets a lot of vapor (comparable to my other vaporizers).
Then, it depends on a lot of parameters... is my second shot very close? is my grass dry or wet? did I make a long or short first draw? is it hot or cold? etc
Usually for the second shot I count to 7 or 8... and if my shots are close together I can go down to 5 seconds of warm-up...
I'm still experimenting, hence my approaches to combustion.
My AVB is now darker, although it can be uneven at times with a darker disc in the center if I'm doing close prints with heavy preheats and high airflow.
It doesn't bother me, just an observation!

I'm now getting 5 or 6 puffs of excellent quality, that's great!

With my batteries, I still don't bother, I change them every 3 or 4 bowls.

And I haven't tested the high heat, the glass balls, the wooden rods yet...I'm taking my time with this setup...I'm enjoying it!
I also grabbed an extra button, I will surely install it when I change the heating... in several months! I will have a new vaporizer!!

Looking forward to hearing feedback from future users!!

Hey @fangorn! Thank you for your perspective and experiences.

Although I don’t have the low heater, I find my experience thus far has been pretty similar. Pre-heat is the most important factor in getting a good hit for me, along with draw speed.

I was having really spotty performance my first day but I narrowed that down to my year and a half old Molicell that’s been through probably over 600 cycles. I refreshed my battery cache and have been getting admirable performance.

I get about 3 draws before I reload, but that’s mostly because I do big lungful draws every time. I do find it’s very easy to overpower the heater with my drawspeed though, but at least I don’t have to feather a button the whole way through my hit.

Best taste is achieved through the glass tube with no beads, but I’m a bead kind of guy and it’s still very very tasty, it can get hit around the lips sometimes though. The wooden stem is very nice and cool but there will be a bit of flavour imparted into your vapour for a couple sessions, but I like the taste of wood myself.

Thanks for your detailed user experiences. These are the kind of posts that this and the Nomad thread are missing in my opinon.

Do you stir your bowl at all between hits? Could you post pics of your abv sometime as well?
(Would you say you're changing your batteries generously after 3 or 4 bowls or you notice a definite drop in performance after?)

I like to get my herb to as dark roasted coffee brown as possible before discarding.

Have you used an mflb before? From reading your post it sounds like having experience with that will help with these devices. But my other point is that that doesn't completely evenly roast either but I'm perfectly fine with the level of extraction --- granted I only use mine with the power adapter these days ---but I just wonder (and assume they do) if these devices roast the bowl at least that evenly without having to stir.

I guess that variable can technically be attributed to how your herb is ground, packed and your inhale as well though...

So I don't know if anything I've said has any substance. There's so many variables that can come into play with these type of devices but I am sure they are more than capable at deep extraction.

Dan told me to load the basket all the way to the brim, no tamp, for the most even extraction around the edges. Personally I don’t like the potential for crumbs getting into the heater so I shove another basket screen in the end hit it like that, the trade off for that is there’s a small ring around the edges that looks like it can be cooked more, but when you give it a stirr and hit there isn’t much vapour left. Very similar to the Tinymight in that regard.

Awesome thoughts and comments!

I'll add a few details.

The old battery thing is definitely real. Regulated devices can compensate for a weak cell, and you'll just notice you may have to charge sooner than normal. But an unregulated device is tuned to have a perfect balance between heater and battery, so, a weak battery will cause a noticeable drop in performance. My cells last about a year, but it all depends on usage. When I switch cells I notice a drastic change.

All batteries have an internal resistance, the lower that resistance is, the more power you'll get out of it with the Toad/Nomad. The molicels have a very low resistance, which is why I like and recommend them, but other batteries may have a higher internal resistance, and may run cooler. This may or may not be noticeable.

Evenness of extraction, and that 'ring' of greener herb around the edge is something that definitely can happen, but is also completely avoidable with practice and technique. I do think this is probably the hardest part of the learning curve.

In general, my sweet spot is to finish a chamber in under 5 hits, usually around 3..maaaybe 4.

I personally don't stir, but there's nothing wrong with it either.

Generally, in my tests, I find the herb extracted before it reaches anywhere near a very dark brown. In my convection devices, I'm going to a more medium or light brown or straw brown colour. Conduction devices I'll be going darker. I don't know what the science is there... just something I've noticed.

So with the heating on high, you preheat, you release the button... and you inhale? You don't hold the button down at all during the inhalation??

For my part, I try to remove as much metal screen as possible. But on this point, I find that by filling all the way to the top and applying light pressure with your finger, the weed stays in place. it works less well if the cannabis is obviously dry!
I really understand your fear... but -and this is rather strange- it doesn't bother me.
Once, I had to brush because 2-3 crumbs had fallen...

No, I don't stir my bowls... for once, I'm afraid that the weed won't stay in place afterwards.
I've tried it once or twice...but haven't found much benefit.

I can post AVB pictures... but I don't find it representative of what I have in front of me... The lighting plays a lot and you won't see the actual color.
But as kindly requested: I think my AVB is clearer than in the photo.
I rarely go very far because I find that what interests me is extracted first!

For the batteries, I change them every 3-4 bowls... because I don't want to bother feeling the loss of power yet. It's easier for me to have this parameter to manage. My charger is next to my sofa, and my battery reserve is 3 meters away...
I cannot enlighten you on this point... for the moment!

For the dark "roasted coffee" color, I think it must be possible, although not necessarily easily with low heating.

I've never gotten this far with the Toad...I quit when I don't get too much vapor...and/or don't like the taste anymore.

I can not compare with the Mflb because I've never tried! The toad is my first battery operated, unregulated vaporizer.

But yes, the AVB is relatively uniform. And even if it cooks less evenly than my other vaporizers, I am very satisfied anyway. When I watch my AVB, I don't feel the urge/need to stir my bowls. And I brought up the darker circle, just because... I'm doing my tests. This is not at all representative of my experience!

Since you are talking about variables, for information (compared to the photo), I use a herb ripper with the medium plate (turning my grinder upside down at the start).

Long story short, one or more users claimed that the Toad (or the Nomad for that matter) worked just as well, that it looked good... Well, that sounded crazy to me, but it's a claim I'm with Okay. With practice, I think you can get him to do whatever you want. I get objectively very big clouds... (even compared to the current benchmark for portable vaporizers that produce clouds..., and that without inhaling for 20 seconds... which I really appreciate. The flavor is really great, and the extraction depends on what you want, and therefore how you suck.

But given what you ask as a question, I will tend to tell you to skip the low heating and choose the high heating directly... but I could be wrong... maybe dan or d others will contradict me!!!

In short, happy vape to all !!!

NICE, thank you for the images and info!

I hear ya that a phone camera does not represent abv very accurately AT ALL color-wise. It's a bit uneven but you are only still getting familiar with your technique.

The roasted sections look well enough roasted for me though.

I went ahead and got both heaters for the Nomad, I figured why not. But yeah, you're right even Dan says he would recommend high heater as best all round.

I agree I think this vape you can achieve anything you're looking for. I'm not even sure why I'm asking if it can get dark coffee brown because I'm pretty positive you can combust in it if you're not careful. Flavor being great is important and I'm super excited for the quick hits.

I personally don't go for huge clouds and prefer wisps or trying to absorb as much visible vapor as possible ha but I'm a micro doser.

Having received one of the very first units, I feel I've done a disservice to the community by not posting more about it.

I've been running with my TOAD nearly exclusively for flower since acquisition, pardon the lack of posts- I've been caught up between moving homes and sick kids and have not had energy to post up as often as I'd like...

Lots to LOVE about this device. I am not babying mine, take it everywhere and in all conditions. Its picked up a nick or two along the way, but the wrap is really tough and the pouch is awesome. I'm loving the mushroom art! Pear stem is a favorite, but I tend to use glass for ease of cleaning. I'm a high heater and coming in with my draw on the 5-6 second mark. I am set up for shallow bowls, quick extraction and typically get a fully extracted and toasted top in 2-3 draws. I seek full extraction with my devices and TOAD is no exception. Admittedly, I've combusted more times than I care to admit, but it is part of the curve (and occasionally even after you have a real good taste/tongue for temps).

I got to go deal with kids, but so much more to share... will try to post up more later!

...currently on the fence if I should fly TOAD with me to Crested Butte/Red Rocks. Thoughts?

Sounds like a good idea, easy to have it be fully cleaned, small and durable, make sure you bring a back up glass stem though!
