Looking for least smelly vape under $200 for at-home use in complex with no-marijuana policy

The apartment lease forbids any smoking or vaping of tobacco or marijuana anywhere on the property (to the edge of the lot). I'm looking to be as discrete as possible so that I don't have to switch to edibles (which I really don't want to do). My main concern is the smell being detectible to anyone. Really flexible on everything else, provided it's under $200. Just want to be able to get high like normal without too much fuss. Prior to this new lease, I used a bong and was happy with that.

I've been reading that on-demand convection is the way to go for this. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Price - Up to $200
Delivery system - At home
Efficiency - I'm flexible
Manufacturer - US would be good
Stealth - Easily stashed away in a box, preferably.
Learning curve - Beginner-friendly
Temperature control - I'm flexible

The least smelly vape i have is the tafee bowl. But its Not under 200.
But most small electric vapes are discreet and If kept clean, almost dont smell at all after vaping. FE crafty mighty, If kept clean and in a bag, wont smell. While vaping it depends on Strain and temps, lower temps, less smell.
But i think concentrate pens could be even less smelly If thats all you want.

A Heat Island log might be a good choice for you, and you could even come in under budget depending on which model you got. If you’re interested I’d ask @Alan directly what he has in stock right now. :)

His website is toasty-top.com

There’s also a thread for it here:

There are other good logs too, but most of them focus on fancier wood which costs more while Alan offers some more budget friendly options.

You could also build a Pinky or something, but there aren’t a lot of high quality convection vaporizers out there for less than $200.

I’ve heard the XMax V3 Pro is good for $100 or so if you need a lower priced portable, but if you can be near an outlet I’d take a good desktop over almost any portable.

I’d also get your flower into airtight containers if you’re trying to keep the smell to a minimum. Fresh or used it’s the main source of the smell over time if you’re using a vape.

I had a friend over tonight and I decided to put the FlowerPot in the other room since I don’t think he knows I use cannabis yet and we had other things we needed to focus on. I barely have a sense of smell due to allergies, but I could easily smell the open bowls of flower.

I moved it into the bedroom, opened the door for a little while and my girlfriend put something in her essential oil diffuser. The smell was gone almost immediately, and any bit that may have lingered was easily hidden in minutes or less. The fact that we’ve been using a heavy hitting desktop in this room for months didn’t even seem to matter.

I’m not saying no one could possibly pick up the smell, but a few hours later I’m sitting where the FlowerPot was and all I can smell is the dishwasher in the next room.

In the bedroom where the open flower is though…that’s different.

I think any convection vaporizer should do the trick (I dont see no reason the vapor's odor from one (herbal) vaporizer would be stronger than another one's).

Store your stash properly (glass jar for example), place a towel (or any big piece of fabric) on the bottom of your apt door, and if you really really want to avoid odors, you can exhale vapor in a device such as a SmokeBuddy (or similar ones you can find on aliexpress). Open a window when you vape (even though vape odors are way less persistent than smoke).

Oh and don't forget that you (your clothes, hair, skin) catch odors as well, so you need to take care not to be betrayed by them in mutual areas (elevator, etc..)

Probably makes sense to start with an Xmax V3 Pro if you're new to weed vapes. It's not the most powerful or the easiest to keep clean but it has unparalleled performance for on demand convection on a budget

Have you used and enjoyed a vaporizer before or is this going to be your first experience with one?

How many times a day do you currently smoke?

For some reason I’m thinking Dynavap, but the Heat Island suggestion sounds good too. Really anything will be a lot more discrete than lighting up.

We have the same rules at my place but it doesn’t stop the guy downstairs from smoking cigs on his front porch. I guess it depends on how committed these residences are to enforcing these policies but unless someone sees you blow a big cloud out the window or go on a stoners cough rampage I doubt anyone would ever suspect anything.

Minimum smell? Hard to beat a Magic Flight launch Box on that count. Its also well under 200 bucks, tiny and made in America.

I think Xmax v3 is a great option. Firewood 7 is another but may be above your budget. And well above your budget I second the Tafee Bowle.

I have the following IQ, Firefly2, Fury Edge, Xmax V3 and a few others......there will be odor. Start doing dabs, don't worry about smell at all. A Puffco Plus or a Stone Smith slash. Both under $100.

My last apartment was in a non-smoking condo building in an illegal state. The state went legal but the building remained non-smoking.
During my ten years there, I smoked from a single hit bowl and latter vaped; perhaps a gram a day, daily.

In cold weather I'd sit by a window, exhale out and be reasonably certain all windows around were closed. During the warm season I would do the same except when the apartment was breathing out through the hall, thus sucking my exhales into other windows.
The best days had the building breathing the other way, wind from the hall rushing in, then out the windows. With the exterior door at the end of the hall propped open, the airflow could be considerable.
On such days I could keep my hall door propped open to the security-chain limit and securely vape inside.

At one time, the apt next to mine was rented by a single individual from elsewhere where tobacco smoking was culturally ubiquitous.
Well before the departure of that one, there could be no doubt whatsoever which door stunk up the hall way (12 floors of 8 apartments each).

When wind direction or winter were limiting, a lot of my vaping time was spent near the kitchen exhaust fan; it was a sweet seat on the living room side of our pass through kitchen counter, with a view of the TV. I exhaled into the fan's flow. I also kept the bathroom fan on.
Both exhausted into the same exhaust duct that ran the length of the hall to the outside. The exhaust fans pulled sufficient air out of the apartment, such that there was noticeable in-draft at the door.

There was a neighbor three floors below and two doors over, who had a nose and an allergy and a mission. She was nice but I worried about being the source of her disturbance that had her walking the halls and following her nose. She lived at the exhaust-outlet end of the building. I was never hassled.
(Willamette Tower, Eugene, OR. if you are interested. The building has a web site, a history and a mid century plaque about being an all electric building.)

Moral: Be a pleasant person and a nice neighbor, know your environment, keep negative pressure in the apartment, use all exhaust fans, keep the fans on after consuming, fans should have working one-way air-seal flaps but neighbors may not, use whatever coverups as you may- I suggest Ozium and cooking Indian curry a lot.

I'll have to check it out the toasty. A desktop would probably be preferable since it will live at home. My boyfriend has a higher than average tolerance, and mine is lower than average, so I'm looking for something that will be comfortable for both of us. Perhaps dropping $100 on a XMax V3 Pro would be the best move - I could stand to spend less money right now on non-essentials. Can it get someone like my boyfriend high without spending 10 minutes taking hits?

I think any convection vaporizer should do the trick (I dont see no reason the vapor's odor from one (herbal) vaporizer would be stronger than another one's).

My saving grace on the flower smell is that I'll be in a legal state (CA) and they can't forbid me from possessing weed that I can claim I smoke elsewhere. I'm not concerned about my clothes smelling like weed, because it's legal and they can't make me quit altogether, they can only prevent me from smoking within the complex and creating a problem with other tenants. I don't see how I could get evicted for possessing weed, so long as I don't smoke it on grounds... right? The lease states that the policy is enforced by tenants notifying the owner, so as long as no other tenants are aware that I'm vaping, I think I'm good.

And I do plan on getting a Smokebuddy or a Sploofy - we weren't exactly the most desirable tenants so if I have an eviction on my record I'm pretty well screwed. Not sure if I should blow through the Smokebuddy into the apartment or outdoors? Is there any proof that vaping weed indoors does any damage to materials?

Probably makes sense to start with an Xmax V3 Pro if you're new to weed vapes. It's not the most powerful or the easiest to keep clean but it has unparalleled performance for on demand convection on a budget

Yeah, I'm definitely leaning in that direction I think.

I've tried a Volcano at a friend's house - that was awesome. I have owned several MFLBs and, while they are fantastic when I have just come off a long break and my tolerance is non-existent, I quickly get underwhelmed after a few days of use. I could probably make do with it, but my boyfriend finds it absolutely impossible to get high at all with a MFLB and vastly prefers a bong. So I definitely want something that is good for him.

Personally, I smoke maybe 1-3 times a day, a very small amount each time. My tolerance is naturally low, and even when smoking daily it usually remains pretty low and only slightly increases over time. The last time I did a dab, for instance, I got physically sick. Didn't even do the whole thing. My partner, however, definitely needs something a little more heavy-duty.

Regarding the enforcement.... yeah that remains to be seen. My current place had a no-smoking clause as well, and my partner smokes on the balcony lol. We're in Texas though and our neighbors almost never have windows open because the weather is usually too hot or cold. I plan on not doing anything for the first few weeks and just smoking away from the complex. My neighbors will probably already be on high alert after we move in, so I'm going to lay low and gauge the atmosphere first. I suspect that there will be other people smoking nearby (lease actually states that there probably will be because these people are on old leases) so I'm hoping that one of them will be close enough to my unit to provide cover.

Hahaha, yeah I've had neighbors like that. Always a good time. That is very comforting to hear though... especially if I pair it with a Smokebuddy or something similar.

BTW does anyone know what the best Smokebuddy-like device on the market is?

Forget the X-Max then, email Alan to get a heat island, there are a lot of options, but a basic standard core in the 3/8 small size or the 7/16 large size will only be $65 for bamboo, figure another 65 for the power supply, shipping, and stems. Best way is to get a WPA as one of the stems to use with a glass piece like a bubbler as well... That is going to be the most versatile for you and your partner, and it will smell the least and be very versatile, you don't even need to bother with smoke buddy crap if you are in California using a log (just keep your weed in airtight containers and be mindful when you are opening it and grinding it, that's what's going to smell the most) The log is going to do everything you want and more, no real sense getting a portable in your situation :2c:

Very much appreciate the explanation. I did look into the Xmax and immediately disregarded it based on tolerance reasons. Seems like it would be great for me as a portable vape, and I will keep it in mind once I'm in the market. I might just completely transition away from combustion now that I'm being forced to do so at home.... I already have breathing problems so I should really stop smoking. Trying to turn this major inconvenience into a positive thing, because it's looking like most new leases in CA have these addendums, so I might as well get used to it...

Will a log have any issues with vapor "leaking" from the unit itself? I'm not exactly sure how it works so I'll have to educate myself. How does it compare to a MFLB, smell-wise? I find that the MFLB creates such little smell that I used one inside my apartment in TX with a non-smoking policy and a clause stating illegal activity would warrant an immediate eviction... I'd invite my property manager inside the day after using it with complete confidence. So, anything on that level or better would make me pretty comfortable.

I did email Alan, but I've been reading that there can be a significant waitlist. If there is a long one, I was considering an Underdog. Would that be a similar product? Also low-smell?

No not at all, that is only a problem when you are using a session conduction based device like Mighty or Pax or Arizer that is constantly cooking your herbs creating the vapor for you... Not at all a concern with a log, the vapor is on demand, created only when you are inhaling, pure convection.

I'm not exactly sure how it works so I'll have to educate myself.

For example, you would plug the log in, turn on at a certain voltage level say 12v and after 10 minutes it is good to go and can be left on 24/7, you then would be using a glass stem as both your vapor path and chamber, it has a basket screen inside it, you can suck up some herbs like a straw, into the basket, then do the same thing but putting it over the log so you are then inhaling air through the log to be heated and then go through the herbs in the basket screen in the glass stem to create the vapor as you inhale (this is pure convection) alternatively, my preference for using these, is to use the WPA glass on glass style stem, where the other end of the glass straw is tapered to fit into a glass bong bubbler or J hook type thing, that way you load the little glass stem like it is a tiny bowl for smoking, except the log itself is your lighter, you turn it upside down and sit it on top of your bowl and same thing inhale the air through to create the vapor. Specifically for the HI, there is a wide variety of different materials for stems, steel /glass /wood /even paper!

How does it compare to a MFLB, smell-wise?

The reason the MFLB has minimal smell is because it is on demand, so that aspect is the same, however the HI should smell even less, being pure convection, the MFLB is on demand pure conduction, and super antiquated design imo if you're not plugging it into the wall it's not worth getting at all and I don't think it's worth getting today at all regardless unless you're interested in collecting old vapes for fun?

The log is going to be much more powerful, should be better flavor and efficiency, I think less technique really once you realize how to take the deep inhale breaths, it is not like smoking since you have to create the vapor by inhaling the air through the herbs, but once you get the hang of it it will be simple and easy to share with others too... When you are using a vape like this, after you take a hit, the vapor will smell in the area for a few minutes, it will quickly dissipate, you don't really have to worry about it, regardless of the rules, in California, you really don't need to worry, I ignore any of those things when I see them in leases because I am vaping in Cali!

I did email Alan, but I've been reading that there can be a significant waitlist. If there is a long one, I was considering an Underdog. Would that be a similar product? Also low-smell?

You're mistaken, the wait list is only for custom orders, you are emailing Alan to inquire what he has in stock to sell you now ready made, one of those options should be the bamboo units which are the cheapest as I said. He also has square and round models in basic woods, domestic woods that are already made, the waitlist is more for custom exotic wood builds... And there is no wait list for stems, it's basically made to order for them. Might not be instant quick turnaround, but if you email him and start talking to him, he can tell you more info and tips, get you set up with the best thing for you, I really think you can't do better than this for your needs!

Yes underdog is great, e-nano is also using similar design, these are log vapes, there are a lot of other options, but they are going to be more money, HI is available to get the cheapest this way, not only that Alan is great and has a lot of attention to detail, very pure materials and he has a lot of great tips, he can even give you specific accessories to help minimize the smell (essential oils and aromatherapy type stuff too)

Wow. Fantastic... I'm glad I was able to chat with you about this. Yeah, I am totally fine with the bamboo if he has any available. Sounds perfect for our needs.

Yeah the MFLB is underwhelming even for me with my baby tolerance, but the smell is indeed pretty minimal. So if this smells even LESS, that is awesome. I know I shouldn't be so worried about vaping - I guess it scared me to read that "vaping" counts as "smoking" and would warrant immediate eviction if they found out. But I feel that it's not a problem unless I make it a problem for another tenant or damage the unit, and am otherwise a good tenant. I still can't seem to find evidence on whether or not this kind of vaping causes any damage in the form of residue on surfaces?

Yeah dude my landlords love me regardless, there are so many different types of places to rent though, so I'm lucky I'm not in a big building or whatever! Anyway no, vaping is not going to leave residue on surfaces, I've thought of that sometimes when vaping heavily with big clouds in a small space like for example if you're in the car on the windshield, but it's never an issue lol

Lol same, I'm ultra responsible and pretty quiet so I get on well with landlords. I'm also not going to be in a big building - it's a complex with like 100 or so units but there are no indoor hallways, just three long buildings with units side by side. Glad to hear about the surfaces, I felt like it would maybe be more dangerous to blow it out a window and possibly right into a neighbor's...

Oh I still consider that a big building compared to where I am and have been! No always is great, yeah honestly there's really no concern, out of window is even harder to distinguish, it dissipates so quick, but there's really no need to take any precautions, vaping with a good vape like this is going to be the precaution

Rad. I was literally just thinking Okay I'll get the vape, then I'll get a Smokebuddy, and then I'll blow through the Smokebuddy and directly into an air purifier with an activated charcoal filter... Insanely overkill, I think I'm just insecure about housing. Can you blame me? lol

Lol you're not wrong! I'm sure I'll be more of a believer once I actually try it. Definitely going to have a non-smoking friend come over and see if they notice a smell after using it. My own nose-blindness is what always concerns me.
