The Advanced Telemetry Module by REFC Labs - The world's first advanced precision & multi-core capable desktop heater controller

Hi there, accessories folks!

With staff permission, I want to introduce a new vape accessory that I recently released - The Advanced Telemetry Module kit by REFC Labs.

The ATM is a drop-in / inline advanced variable voltage controller module that can power almost any 12V vaporizer, heater, or accessory that we here use today. It is meant to be compact, portable, lightweight, and convenient without sacrificing performance or usability, or even desk space.

The ATM was designed here in the lab to meet several goals and resolve some rather obvious deficiencies in user experience with the standard 12V VVPS unit used with most desktop class 12V Vaporizers. In addition to rather awful accuracy, many of these controllers suffer from voltage drift as the components inside heat and change in tolerance. This manifests as a change in display voltage and output, giving the user an inconsistent experience until the brick has fully heated and settled in. Furthermore these units have a distinct lack of repeatability as the settings are adjusted every time it gets used, making repeat uses a guessing game. One solution is to unplug it, but this doesn't help if the knob gets bumped (very common) or another device is used.

Facing these challenges, I designed an inline voltage controller that adds precision, programmability, and modularity to standard 12v desktop heaters. The ATM was designed for use with The HighLighTED Glass-Halogen Heater Core, but has proven to be a very capable PSU for nearly every 12V heater I've thrown at it. It uses "industry standard" 5.5x2.1mm female dc jacks commonly found on most 12v heaters.

This controller provides extremely stable DC conversion (accurate to 1/100th of a volt/amp/watt), 10 memory presets, and 2 memory shortcut keys allowing the user to have "idle" and "boost" modes available at the touch of a button. It also features programmable overvoltage, overcurrent, and overwattage protections as well as a dimmable LCD for use in low light. For those of you that care, this unit can run in both constant voltage and constant current (CV/CC) modes. If you don't know what this means, that's perfectly fine :) For our use case, constant voltage is appropriate and the default "mode" that everyone is used to.

Simplex (single controller) and Duplex (dual controller) model kits are currently available with more stock being manufactured daily. I wanted to bring some visibility to this project to the greater FC community as most of the discussion has been buried in some pages of the HLT thread in /plug ins. Current kits ship with the shell and DC jacks. The customer supplies the correct converters from amazon (linked in product description) as well as a power brick and the necessary male-male 5.5mm cables. I have plans to make completed units available in small quantities as I am able to. This assembly is *super* easy like the HighLighter takes only a screwdriver and a few minutes to assemble. A build video can be found here and a programming guide is now available here.

I'm happy to answer any questions you may have! More details are available on my site (linked above), and instagram. A short demo video can be found over on reddit in r/VaporMilking showing how simple it is to boost a halogen core.

Warmest regards,

Red

I have been loving my duplex unit for running my Woodscents and Highlighter! It really makes my old china VVPS seem useless in comparison, the voltage sag issues caused me to always be fiddling with the knob. The ATM lets me to set it and forget it when it comes to voltage, most I’ve gotta do now is press the on/off button for each module. If you value conveniency this is the thing for you!

I'm not an intelligent person, so please be patient with me, but will this allow me to run both a vapbong power supply AND my PID for my flowerpot? Because this will be life changing

Not yet. The current model allows for multiple VVPS controlled heaters. I'm currently investigating a dual PID/VVPS. This is a much larger challenge due to disparate wiring between manufacturers and the fact that you need both mains power and low voltage (so it still needs an on-board PSU for the VVPS).

Don't expect anything right away, but it is being investigated with hopes I can provide it.

Red was nice enough to put one together for me, siplex (I don't really like saying simplex, reminds of herpes lol and siplex seems more like a direct counterpart to duplex -- like why is there an extra M added randomly?? I really don't understand language LOL) in purple and I am really looking forward to receiving it!! He does such great work...

@danjens very nice, is that the GooRoo 3piece or the hookah one? Looks like the hookah mouthpiece, though you're using it backwards maybe? I love that aqua blue turquoise though, I have a mouthpiece like that that I use with my orange yellow 3piece and modular TAG super slit...

This is the hd 3 piece with an added hookah whip. Got it during the Black Friday saw for around 170 with a colored mouthpiece as well. Unbelievable deal in my opinion.
Definitely not backwards on the wand, using the same orientation as received from gooro. Distinct -~10mm side for tubing and mouthpiece on the other. Picture may make it look strange with the tips cut off.
I absolutely love this piece with the whip. Being able to watch the glass milk up is very satisfying.

Yeah it's just interesting because they make that color end the mouthpiece for my three-piece bubbler version... Yeah it looks great, fantastic score, enjoy dude! I've got a whip coming soon to use with mine as well.

I’ve committed to simplex that Paul over at TimberHead Designs is going to put in a two tone Cocobolo wood housing to match my WoodScents setup. 2A5B184C-DDF3-4C0A-ABFA-CD5ADA303028.jpegI’m hopeful we will be able to get a spot for the WoodScents to rest and a spot for a Dynavap.

Here is a pic of a Duplex that @Timberhead did in walnut recently.

@RedEyeFlightControl I believe Paul has been working with you. I hope you don’t take this as bombing your thread. I love what you’re doing and I’m excited to get one of these ATMs.

Paul did reach out to me to ask if I'd have any issue with him using the dual converter idea. I expressed this was OK as long as my material design was not copied. His design looks great! I would prefer for the "ATM" name to refer specifically to my housing design so there is not confusion as to who made what. I did not design or produce this one - I don't want to take any credit away from @Timberhead for this kickass setup!

vaped.
@RedEyeFlightControl are the cases printed using PLA or ABS? looking into vapor smoothing mine and curious of the material used to know my options and if i want to risk it or not. i am happy with the way it is now but just curious.

@RedEyeFlightControl Do you still plan on selling completed ATM's? Would like to pick one up, would replace what two separate controllers i use, one for woodscents and figure i could use this for my induction heater as well.
Yes - I'd like to get a few listed soon.

The cases are printed in either PLA or PLA+. You can use acetone vapor to post-process PLA if I recall. I would be very careful! I typically use a small pair of cutters and a torch to "paint" any issues with heat, which will re-color and hide most surface damage, within reason. It's a good trick for cleaning up edges and other print artifacts.

Where can I find it in europe? I want to use it in my vapbong 😋
I ship to most countries worldwide and should be able to help with a few exceptions.

@Shit Snacks Hey bud! I was wondering if you tried your controller with any of your sweet Collyland gear? Would it work? Is this the reliable PU we’ve all been yearning for? Some yesses, please? :) :D

My man! No I have not tried it with anything except for my Halo yet, however yes it will work great with Collyland stuff, Red specifically tested it with his and lists it as an example in his promotion of the ATM... I got mine with a power supply that has enough voltage room to use my Atlas as well, it similarly runs at higher voltage for me, even more than my Collyland bandits... Really nice to have multiple VVPS set up to use in different rooms with different vapes, although my ATM is probably the nicest one!

Got my ATM up and running, with all the attendant discoveries and questions.

I'm realizing that I don't know the voltage range of my Herborizer Ti's original dial, can only find the temps that correspond with each position on the dial. Any Herbo users know how voltage corresponds to positions on the dial? Don't have a multimeter at the moment unfortunately...

And looks like a smaller than 2.5 mm male plug is needed for my OAB from Collyland. Adaptors here I come! Just need to track down VapBong plug diameter. While I don't have a multimeter, I do have calipers...

I run my Ti around 9.7v. Anywhere from 8-10 seems pretty good, with 8 being light terpy hits. A few pulls at 9.7 produces medium/dark roast.

For the Collyland products, you will want a converter tip that converts your 5.5x2.1mm male to a 5.5x2.5mm male. The Collyland products have a 5.5x2.5mm female jack which has the 2.5mm center pin, larger than the 5.5x2.1mm male tip can accommodate.

Well, that certainly answers those questions. I'd quite liked 8V on Herbo Ti for my first round of the ATM, and converter to 2.5 is on its way!

Really loving this kit!

Next ATM question. It seems that the display will always be on whether on or off as long as it is plugged in. Or am I missing where this can be set.

Not ideal for a bedside setting.
