This may seem like a lame question, sorry if it is, but why is it that the smilies only work some of the time?

A few things could cause that to happen.
When making a post make sure the "Never show smilies as icons for this post" is not checked.
Click Profile > Display
and make sure "Show smilies as graphic icons" is checked.
There must be a space between words and smilies or sometimes they won't display. Example:
no space
space
If those don't fix it you'll have to call the FC technical support hotline.

LOL. Good one.
Thank you vtac. I wasn't always leaving a space. It was blowing my mind that sometimes, during the same post, it would work and sometimes it wouldn't. Little thing, but annoying, you know?

My posts would show some smilies as images and some as type. Now that I've added the space, all is well.
