Question about my Steinel

So I've decided to use a heat gun to vaporize my goodies. Went to Amazon and picked up one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Steinel-UltraHeat-Variable-Temperature-Without/dp/B000HT8L8M Have any of you guys used one of these before?

Well the first time I turned it on, it totally stank up my garage. Now I know the manufacturer said this is the result of residue burning off or whatever, but it still freaked me out. Is this a natural occurrence and is the heat gun safe to use for vaporizing after all the residue is burned off?

Also, does anyone have any guidelines on what temperatures the various settings (1-6) are? I don't have a thermometer or anything so I'm not sure which one to set it on.

I think most vapes are going to have a stinky break in period. You should be fine - as far as others using a heat gun, I think Jackstraw (in the chat rooms) uses one.
