Popcorn Toppings?

Hey guys, maybe you can help me out for my movie night...

I need a topping for my mom's Lightly-buttered popcorn, I can't handle that bland shit. Anyone have ideas for a nice, flavourful topping for the 'corn? The best popcorn I ever had was a paprika and fresh lime mixture, was delicious at a local bar. I sort of want something sweet, yet tangy. I saw a suggestion for lemon juice with sugar which I thought was a good idea, but as I read, the suggestion makes the popcorn slightly soggy. I'm looking for a perfect crunch-to-flavour ratio, if possible.

I found this site that has some good ideas, but I want some 'vaporized' opinions. Come on, hit me with your flavour creations!! I'll compile them to make a tasty snack idea thread haha.

Good old Kraft mac and cheese topping. Sure it wastes the mac, but as stoner's delight on popcorn.

OK probably not the same nowdays, but the old powdered cheese was perfect.

Wow that sounds good. I wonder if the Easy Mac cheese would be better since it just needs H20. Smartfood on steroids.

You can buy the KD powder in a container, it's just Kraft powdered cheese... comes in a yellow container like the Kraft 100% Parmesan cheese.

Haha that's gnarly
I love brewer's yeast on my popcorn, I think it's pretty good for you as well.

Lime and chili powder is delicious, that's the sweet/sour your looking for

There's always chocolate powder

I've put teryaki sauce on popcorn (soy sauce, toppa dulce or some other sweet sugar viscous liquid, garlic and ginger cooked down) - This one is hard to get to stay crunchy though

brewers yeast and lime/chili are my favorites though

old bay seasoning. not sure if it's available everywhere.

and another vote for the cheese powder. i've seen that stuff in bulk on the interwebs, 1 full pound of powdery cheesy goodness.

cinnamon sugar is nice too.

if you spray the popcorn with a spritz of butter flavored cooking spray before adding powder of your choice, it sticks better.

So after my trial attempt, I found that Old Bay was a very nice, flavourful seasoning that obviously allows the popcorn to remain crunchy. I think my favourite was cinnamon sugar though, really complemented the Old Bay nicely.

Chili/lime was good, but I didn't do a great job of it. I need to make a chili-lime sauce mixture that would coat the popcorn better.

I'm also interested for toppings, but for chips. I don't like all the artificial flavoring and monosodium glutamate in chips, so natural home made flavors added to salted chips would be great.

I sometimes use sugar which adds some good sweetness. One time I made a topping out of honey, butter, and cinnamon which turned out ridiculously good but use it sparingly and shake up the bag or else they'll get soggy which takes away the sought after crunchyness.

Garlic kettle corn! :p So good, doesn't sound like it should be, I can't stop eating it when it is made. Thanks to the Gilroy garlic festival for this.

Start heating a thick, heavy bottomed pan over medium heat. Add peanut oil to coat the bottom, add popping corn, and a few tablespoons of powdered sugar (this is to taste, but for a 3 quart pot, 1 to 2 tablespoons works well). Stir the corn, oil and sugar together until everything is coated. Cover and let sit, shaking isn't going to do much because with the sugar nothing is really going to shake around that much, that is way a really quality pot is important.

Meanwhile, melt your butter. I like to use a ratio of about 1/4 - 1/3 of a stick and about 5 cloves of garlic. Peal the cloves, then just smash them once with the heal of a chief's knife so that they are split, crushed, but not minced as they would be coming out of a garlic press. Let the garlic simmer in the butter over really low heat for about 10 minutes or so. Usually I start the garlic and butter first, get the garlic simmering then move on to working on the corn.

As the corn starts popping, and enough has popped to fill the pot perhaps half way, you can tilt the cover away from you a bit and stick a spoon in there to stir the kernels up a bit. If you are uncomfortable with this step, you can skip it, but you will get a bit more popcorn stuck and burned to the bottom of the pan, but it won't affect the other corn. Eye protection is not a bad idea. :)

When done popping, dump into a big bowl, drizzle butter on being careful not to let a clove of garlic slip in the corn. Add salt to taste, get a good movie, some good green, and a bunch of paper towels, and dig in!

Toss the chili powder on top of the kernels then run lime juice down the side of a large stainless bowl and use a flipping/tossing motion to lightly coat all the corn.

Amongst the corn
I like cumin & butter & salt. I also like this on grilled corn on the cob.

All I could think about was Adam Sandlers 'Baffoon on a date' skit.

Old Bay is good on just about anything.:p
i imagine cinnamon sugar would be pleasant and nice complement to the aftertaste of the Old Bay.

i forgot baconsalt http://www.jdfoods.net/products/baconsalt.php

i seem to remember mixing powdered sour cream and dill or something together for popcorn powder once, like years ago. that would probably work for chips too.
*she says as she considers hauling out the dehydrator and some sour cream and dill to dry in it*
