Use, Misuse, and Abuse!
Any advice or suggestions would be helpful, I’m wanting to make stems and things, possibly some things out of metal.

Check out the PenPal lathe if you're low on space. It's small but good quality. It's meant for making pen bodies, so making stems on it should be pretty easy.

So, very vague. I have a small Craftex lathe. I do mostly metal, it has feed and can do threading. Depends on your location and situation. New, Canada, Busy Bee, US, Harbour Freight. Used, Canada, Kijiji, US, Craigslist. If you like beauty, Myford made a lathe 60-80 years ago that is wonderful to look at and can do everything and can be had reasonably if you keep an eye. Also many of a certain age are coming to the end of their hobby life and you can get complete setups, ready to go for fair prices as family has no interest. Area has some to do with it, here I could find a great lathe setup for $600-1000.
