The fences had been left unsecured Tuesday at the Muskingum County Animal Farm in Zanesville, in east-central Ohio, and the animals' cages were open, police said. They wouldn't say what animals escaped but said the preserve had lions, tigers, cheetahs, wolves, giraffes, camels and bears. They said bears and wolves were among 25 escaped animals that had been shot and killed and there were multiple sightings of exotic animals along a nearby highway.

If I was driving down the highway and saw a fucking giraffe I would consider putting the LB down for a minute LOL

It was unclear how many animals remained on the property when he died, but he had said in a bankruptcy filing in May 2010 that he owned four tigers, a lion, eight bears and 12 wolves. The U.S. Department of Agriculture had revoked his license to exhibit animals after animal-welfare activists campaigned for him to stop letting people wrestle with another one of his bears.

 You are too funny!

I saw this story this morning and considered posting it myself. Can you imagine waking up with your cup of coffee and seeing a lion in your yard?

ROFL!!! I am reminded of the little kid in Jurassic Park 2 that woke up to a T-Rex drinking out of the pool in his back yard LOL Ironically I was watching that on TV last night hahaha

Oh man if I walked outside in the morning to go to work and spotted a random giraffe just kicking it in my yard, that would absolutely make my day.

I absolutely love giraffes. Beautiful, graceful creatures, especially when they run. They just seem to glide . . . its awesome.

Bit OT, but I used to hate giraffes, but for a total funny reason...

My real name is Jeff, and I used to fucking hate that stupid giraffe mascot/spokesman from Toys R Us (Geoffrey the Giraffe) because his name was spelled different than mine, and I didn't like that for some reason when I was a kid.

My fav animal was always the hippo lol

The worst part is they are killing or have killed most of them. Even the tiger's which are fucking endangered as hell. http://tvnz.co.nz/world-news/endangered-animals-shot-in-ohio-animal-escape-4475570

"One of the escaped big cats reached an interstate highway and was hit by a car." That would put a strange twist to your seemingly average Ohio day.

I can't say I blame them for shooting the animals, but I wonder how much effort or thought was put into trapping and tranquilizing them. The owner of the animals was apparently abusive as well, which won't make a happy tiger or bear that's for sure. I thought this was really shitty news to hear today.

I have to agree that once the shock of it and subsequent humor of what a shock it would be wore off, and the reality of what was happening to these animals sunk in, I felt the same way aesthyrian. So sad to see so many animals put to death. They weren't equipped to deal with this and had to move swiftly though. These animals were on the move and there was danger outweighing keeping them alive.

It's worth mentioning that the (private) zookeeper seems to have committed suicide before letting the animals loose, perhaps some last-ditch attempt at redemption (re: prior reports of his abusing his animals)? In any case, these animals are clearly not "free and safe," its an interesting question to put forth IMO then whether or not the escaped exotic animals are truly "free" considering their "liberty" is not in the context of their natural environment.

I can't imagine seeing exotic animals outside of a cage in these places! Even the free-roaming peacocks at some zoos strike me as odd.

But like I quoted before...

Dude was nuts and wanted to go out with a bang I guess. He was already fucked. Its really HIS fault they were all getting shot tho. I read somewhere else cops/animal control said something about tranquilizing large animals can cause them to freak out for a bit after getting shot before they go down. If they were running loose in the woods that's a different story, tranq them and wait, don't kill. If they are in a backyard eyeing up the neighbors kids or running wild down main street and peoples lives are in danger, then they need to go down, and fast. I'm all for animal rights but in some situations they need to go. The way this was handled sounds like a little of both tho....some needed to get dropped and some were prob just offed by cops that wanted a free exotic animal hunt.

Regardless, giraffes should not be in Ohio unless its a fucking city zoo.

It breaks my heart that so many of these animals died because some jackass decided to leave their enclosure doors open. I don't want anyone to commit suicide, but if a person refuses to listen to reason, PLEASE don't take anyone or anything else with you. :(
