Lab-Grown Quartz

Supersniffer 2000 - robot fart detection device
I have used quartz beads in my attempt for a DIY Glass Symphony, they were the round and polished type i am sure those will make some scratches and possibly dust.
I used the ones like in the second link,i think it was mountain quartz.

They have holes in them. I wonder if that changes anything compared to beads without holes

@Abysmal Vapor How well did it work? Did the extra nucleation sites make a noticeable difference with beads like that? I'm leaning towards the first link, as I expect the faceted finish will increase nucleation compared to the smooth surface.

@Diggy Smalls I think having the holes in them is a good thing, another route for nucleation as well as more contact surface. Similar to a knot.

I'm just about ready to pull the trigger since it's cheap, but just waiting to hear from anyone with experience or safety info :p

Edit: In fact, there are some more interesting options in the first link....

Anyone have any insight regarding which of these would be superior?

Edit 2: FUCK IT - I'll be the guinea pig. I bought the crackle faceted:

The 1's you purchased would most likely be the worst to experiment with being that they are not round and more oval. Looks like they would have a hard time spinning around in a banger which I believe is the intended purpose of this all. Also with that crackle design they may scratch up your quartz so just be careful. I hope it does work out though.

@Justpassedu In regard to the scratches that's a great point! Fortunately I'm trying it in a china banger. They just came in, and I tested a dab with some of them in the banger after cleaning them and letting them get to temp. Compared to dabbing at the same temp without them, there's a noticeable difference in how quickly it vaporizes. These definitely don't spin, but they do move. They don't move as freely as the spheres, but they do move a bit.

I hadn't thought about this before buying those, but I did just realize something that may make these better than spheres, though I don't have spheres to compare with. These have more surface area in contact with the bottom of the banger than a sphere would, improving heat transfer and decreasing the rate of loss (I have an enail with a coil that covers the bottom of the banger too, so there's constant heat below them).

I don't really care about the novelty of the spinning things; for me this is to improve vaporization similar to core reactor bangers.

I'll need to give it some more testing, but so far so good!

Alright I did some more testing. 2-3 of these wasn't an improvement. 8 of them was great, and it was vaping more efficiently at the same temp; more volume. They barely moved at all, so I think it was just the increase in surface area. The most testing was done with 20-30 of these (I tried a few diff amounts) in the banger, hoping to emulate the effect of the diamond knots. The best run was at 15 degrees hotter than usual (I let it sit for 30-40 mins first), and I turned on glob mode 15 seconds in. I've never tried one of the knots, but there was a significant improvement in efficiency; unfortunately the flavor was more muted pretty consistently. If anyone has any ideas or something they want me to try, let me know. It will take a bit for me to get back to you, though... Had a sudden thing come up (nothing serious) that has me away from my setup until next Sunday/Monday, so no more testing for a bit.

Edit: Also, on some of the tests I mixed up the beads mid dab with the dabber about 30 seconds in, after second rip. Not sure if it had any effect.
