Kanye West "Runaway" (Full-length Film)

I checked out the beginning of it. I'll take a look at the rest later for sure but I'm much more interested in his music than his film. Unfortunately the recently released track-list for his upcoming album reveals that about half of the songs have already been released (mostly as G.O.O.D. Friday songs). Will still be buying the album of course.

Yea I listened to 7 out of the 12 songs so far and I am digging it it. A billion times better than that last "Heartbreaker" album he came out with. Make sure you check out the actual runaway scene/performance in the film at about 14 minutes in. Best scene in the film in my opinion.

Fine line between genius and insanity. And then you add "artist" to that mix and whatdya get?

Kanye does some good work though.

MCing = wack
production = wack

dood is as fake as it gets from his demeanor to his "next levelness"... please. this guy is NOT pushing any artistic boundaries. he is out to make a buck and thats it. he compares himself with the likes of god... the guy is just doosh all the way around.

i think his production is excellent, but i'm not sure how to begin having that argument. i'll grant you that as an MC he leaves something to be desired, but i also find his delivery enjoyable, even when it's stupid.

i think his public persona is absolutely hilarious, even though it doesn't seem like he's in on the joke

People throw the word genius around a bit too loosely these days. Myself included. With music, it generally has to do with how the music "hits you" (as Bob would say).

That said, I've never heard a Kanye West song I didn't like. I'm actually surprised at how good the music is, over and over again. His flow, while no where near Rakim, works very well with his music. Plus, whenever I hear another rapper's song that is produced by Kanye (which is how I first heard of him, on Talib Kweli's album) it is usually very good.

As a side, if you're going to insult someone, you should spell the insulting word properly. D O U C H E, not doosh. ;)

Oh, and he isn't in on the joke and I hope it stays that way.

Nothing wrong with voicing your opinion. I don't think you sound like a dick at all, but please elaborate on why you think Kanye is a "wack" MC, and producer. Yes, most here already stated that they understand that Kanye is a "douche," but you are the only one in this topic so far saying West is NOT talented, so why don't you show us other wise instead of the other way around?

I used the word genius because to me, if you can mc, produce and your making the kind of music and numbers Kanye is without having to resort to the typical image of what a hip hop artist/rappers are suppose to act/sound like then you have something above average I believe.

Kanyes image and music has been constantly ridiculed by individuals in the hip hop game and he has yet to revert to the typical look and style of most hip hop artist so I really don't understand what you mean by his "image" being wack and him being fake. I'm very curious to know.. who do you see as being a talented lyricist and producer?

i know how to spell the word. im an educated person. i just like it the way i spelled it originally. shouldnt matter how i spelled it... you understood it right? that should be all that matters. i know how to spell the word, but i like it the way i spelled it originally. can you say grammar police...?

and im not here to insult him... well maybe a little, but only because he totally deserves it.

above average is far from genius.

his MCing is wack because its so dumbed down. the guy used to be credible in hip hop. then he wanted to get rich and now he makes music to do just that. his lyrics are childish at best. no real substance in what he is saying. unoriginal flow at that. that is all of course my opinion of him. his writing skills are MTV quality and thats it. he belongs on MTV and should stay there. his production is equally as dumbed down as his writing. unoriginal synths and drums... the list goes on. this is all of course just my opinion.

his whole 80s, collar popped, frat boy X b-boy persona is so lame. again my opinion. yes he is different from most in hip hop. most of it is still cheez dick money making, gangster bullshit, horrible breaks and unoriginal sounds and MCs with no skillz. but that does not excuse his lameness.

i dont really have any MCs to show you as talented these days as i dont believe there are many left. i say that as far as any MCs pushing the art form instead of just recycling the same ol shit. ill have to get back to you on this one.

as for production

flying lotus
clutchy hopkins
madlib
peanut butter wolf
shadow
gaslamp killer
d styles
lorn
asura
stuff like that

big fan of the ubiquity and stones throw labels

well far be it from me to come after a guy who lists peanut butter wolf as a favorite producer, that guy is indeed the shit.

but i do have to take issue with you when you say kanye's a bad writer. he might be a bad stylist...are there any other major hip hop acts out there that try to "rhyme" a word with itself as many times as kanye?

but i think he's actually a very good writer, and his best songs are some of the most evocative and poignant in modern hip hop. ("all falls down" is a great example.)

and even as a stylist he does have his moments - witness the breakdown and conclusion on "Gone", probably his best track.

i also disagree about persona, i think describing kanye as a "frat boy" is a little too simplistic. in the space of 5 or 6 years the guy has transformed himself from an also-ran into a hip hop icon, and you need more than just a frat boy look to do that. he has great style (style in this case meaning his look and the way he acts in public) and charisma, and lots of kooky obsessions to keep us guessing - glam rock, techno, anime, etc.

anyway enough of that, i guess you either like him or you don't. but that's my case

The really successful artists are those that know how to market themselves, and in that aspect, that may be where his real genius lies, eh?

i can understand that

but when i say wack i mean it in regards to his art only. i dont care how many records he sells. record sales mean jack shit. does he sell records? hell yes he does so in that aspect he is great, but the art itself is lacking substance IMO. i feel dumber when i hear his super commercial music on the radio.

im sorry to sound so negative about him its just that i dislike him that much. to me he is an imposter... a front. he acts like hes is this artistic revolutionary... and that couldnt be further from the truth.

to me he is all image. btw i said "frat boy X b-boy". and those kooky obsessions you refer to... glam rock, techno, and anime have all been beaten to death... played... nothing new there. but claims he music is "next level"... its simply not. he isnt doing anything new that others havent been doing for years now.

sorry to be such a hater.... :o i guess i should let yall know i was voted "hater of the year" 6 years inna row and countin...

Really? Wow.....for a guy who has generated as much money and as much interest in his persona as he has done, I would tap his brains for any marketing, PR and media ideas that he would have, for as a business man, he is surely a helluva lot more successful than any of us.

yes really

money is not that important to me. i dislike him that much. call it self respect or call it dignity... whichever you like.

but i take art very seriously. too seriously sometimes i suppose but i believe that sustaining an amount of integrity in art is important.

kanye i believe is on the other side of the fight... you couldnt pay me enough to let him help me make any money.

besides i can do it without him. trust me.

im going to stop posting my views on kanye in here though because i feel ive totally derailed the thread. for that i apologize to the OP and any readers of this thread.

i don't think there was an actual discussion that you derailed and i enjoyed your opinionated and civil replies...and misspellings.

most of the music i listen to is not mainstream and certainly not anywhere near pop-culture, so thanks (as sincere as you can be on forum with the word fuck in it) but no thanks. gay fish, wow. guess i'll google that. :uhoh:
