Holding in your hits

After years of experimenting with vapor, have to agree with many here that what @lwien and others are saying is the most effective way to absorb vapor. Once the lungs gather the O2 (and other things mixed with it) they seem to stop absorbing, or at least do it much more slowly. Adding fresh air by exhaling part of your hit and breathing in again introduces more oxygen and more absorption. Do this a few times every hit and you will notice a difference.

Also worth noting is that when you are exhaling vapor, we don't really know what is in it without some serious testing. May just be that your stash was rather moist and you're exhaling simple steam. Or, could be that you're exhaling more actives than you just absorbed into your lungs. Depending on your vape temps, could even be that what you're exhaling are things you don't really want anyway.

Do what you like and think works best for you, but at least try the several inhales on one hit. Your stash will shrink slower if nothing else.

Regarding the whole "wasted vapor" thing, I can only go by my personal experience. When I take a huge bong rip off of my LSV, and exhale HUGE vapor clouds, I get a LOT higher than taking a smaller hit and producing smaller clouds.

Why do you think that holding in hits from his bong caused his COPD rather than his tobacco smoking?

Docs said it was a contributing factor to his idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Among many other things.

Regarding the whole "wasted vapor" thing, I can only go by my personal experience. When I take a huge bong rip off of my LSV, and exhale HUGE vapor clouds, I get a LOT higher than taking a smaller hit and producing smaller clouds.

But, what about a huge bong rip compared to several small hits (same amount of material vaped)?

I find the several small hits works better for me AND makes my meager stash last much longer.
I strive to exhale no vapor, as that vapor likely contains goodies that are escaping :)
If I had a decent supply of herb, ya I'd probably create a few clouds...

If anyone has a partner to vape with, who doesn't mind inhaling your exhale, they should take a big rip, hold it for like 3-5 seconds, exhale it into either their partners mouth, or a bag (loses a tiny bit more do to condensation of your hot moist breath), and report how high both got.


The cloud size : highness ratio is a correlation. I believe it's due to both the psychological effect of seeing the clouds,(exhale with eyes closed maybe?) and also, probably mostly, the fact that in order to be exhaling clouds that dense, they must've gone Into your lungs even denser and given you a big dose In One shot.

I just tried the @lwien method with a dab, it definitely worked and broke through my tolerance to get me to a [9.5]. Downside is my lungs were very irritated for a minute of two and had a hacking fit. I'll have to try it with smaller dabs and less harsh oil.

I oftently use the exhale/rebreath tech as well. I have an hypothesis that the air movement inside the lungs adds to the absorbtion efficiency as well. Something with shaking the alveolus with the airflow.

I have another hypothesis where the rebreath tech just makes me feel relax just because im holding my air in and adds to the herb effect without extracting much more from the cloud.

I've always done it that way, seems natural. I think that the additional oxygen could provide for better oxidation and molecular exchange, like how a fire burning gets bigger with more air introduced.

I tried the slight exhale/reinhale on my hits during my lunch break....felt pretty high! Don't know how much higher but I thought it worked to some degree.

Usually I just take massive long tokes. Destroys my lungs, gets me ripped, but these got me as ripped and were a bit easier on my chest.

Ya know, I'm kinda known around here for having a really low tolerance based upon how long a gram will last me vaping 5 to 6 nights a week, but considering what you just said, maybe it's this technique that's playing a bigger part in this than I thought as far as bud conservation goes.

I really never gave it much thought though because this is the way I always consumed weed, even back when I smoked joints back in late 60's.

I need to try this technique with my Herbie then as i know that by the end of bowl 3, using my normal method i am pretty medicated.
With the Nano it is 3 stems of 2mm of bud per stem and i am done!

I agree that it is this technique that aids absorbing more actives as well as @flotntoke mention of replacing oxygen in order for more absorption to take place.

I've been doing the L.I.T. (lwien's inhalation technique) to get lit for a long time and propose it be named ever thus. Yes...I know there are probably millions of people, like myself, who have naturally adopted this method over time BUT until now it has never had a proper acronym.

Now...If you'll excuse me I will be applying said technique.

Something I always do is fill my lungs with clean air as I'm pulling away, that combined with the minor exhale/reinhale has seriously gotten me retarded high tonight. Great stuff, what a minor moderation with significant results.

I've been trying out @lwien's technique. I don't have a huge amount of lung capacity so I've been tweaking it to fit my needs. Thanks for sharing. I think my draws on average maybe 10 seconds. I exhale after 5 seconds then take a breath, after 3 seconds hold in a draw then I exhale. I may try one more breath in and exhale, if I have more breath. It depends on the mood, regular old school works too.

There's a lot of ideas out there. They are good to see.

This thread speaks to me because due to the costs of an ounce i have to hold every single hit. So i use a water level just 2mm over a simple 4 hole perc watertool, It just grabs particulates not reduce vapor and hold it for as long as i can like you people talk about.

If i exhale against the light and see vapor, Then i am wasting meds but my technique seems the same because i hold it so long (11 seconds) i need a small intake of air to keep me from blacking out lol. So it enables me to keep everything in.

After years of smoking i probably have COPD, I had brochitus before and i think this helps me get more meds and boost lung capacity. But i have noticed some weird pain lately in my lower left which doesnt seem to be related to anything but stabs like a devil. Somehow in my mind i am thinking about it being muscle related maybe? Can you injure a muscle in the diaphram doing this? It is just around my lower left hip under the lung and i do a lot of this breath holding daily.

You may want to consider a slightly different inhale/exhale technique as I believe holding it in as long as you can and then giant exhale is not the most efficient.

Your lung alveoli grab oxygen or THC/CBD from air that passes over them. If air is not moving, they only grab the little that is in direct contact with them. In other words, keeping air moving in the lungs promotes maximum extraction. Holding for 11 seconds , the air is not moving.

I find drawing in slowly for a nice complete breathe (but not an all out max that you can hold) and a nice gentle hold, like for only 5 seconds, then start a nice gentle exhale that keeps the lung air slowly moving for max extraction.
But you only gently exhale about 1/4 of what you inhaled, then a gentle pause , followed by a gentle inhale, hold for a little pause, a gentle exhale of about 1/4 of your inhale -----and repeat.

With this technique, I still can get visible vapor after 5 or 6 of these inhale/exhale cycles!! And that last vapor has been circulated several times thru the lungs for max extraction. All from only one hit on the vaporizer

Will try for sure, At the minute i am sucking AVB haha and i did a count, ten seconds seems roughly correct for the slow relaxed inhale, And about another ten holding until i can hold no more then i take a little in, Another bit maybe i do exhale sometimes the main thing is not blowing it out though right?

The oil videos are pretty painful to watch and monster dabs where people nearly faint and yet exhale what seems like the entire cloud, I would kill for that exhale nevermind the inhale. I believe years ago on the streets it was termed a "blowback" where some urchin got a free smoke.

@lwien's method or a slow exhale works better than holding in your draw until you can't hold any longer, then you exhale quickly so you're defeating the purpose.

Have you ever been with that person that always takes a huge draw then they try to hold it as long as possible, then they cough all over you. That should be on the thread what stoners hate - maybe it is already.

You may want to reread the sequence. You want to gently inhale, NOT hold until you cannot hold anymore--but rather only hold a few seconds so you can comfortable exhale 1/4, hold slightly, inhale that 1/4 again, gently hold. gently exhale 1/4.

If you hold as long as you can, then you blow it all out--not what you want
