Favorite hip-hop/rap to listen to while smoking?

I am very white, but I hate most music made by white people. If it involves an electric guitar played by somebody who needs sunscreen and made since 1980, I'm not interested. Hip-hop, reggae and jazz and my tastes in music. I've found that these genres are being abused or neglected by the Top 40 culture, and that the best way to hear about new artists/songs is by word of mouth, or keyboard.

My favorite hip-hop smoking songs are, off the top of my head:

-Sour Diesel by N.O.R.E.
-Let Him Be High All the Time, a remix of a 50 cent song and the Beatles' Let It Be
-Let a Thug Smoke by The Individuals
-When I'm Lit by M80
-Big City Life by Mattafix (not really hip-hop, but good)
-Damn it Feels Good to Be a Gangsta by Geto Boys
-Growing Pains by Ludacris
-On My Block by Scarface

Immortal Technique, Eminem, Lil Wayne, and Dr. Dre.

Damian Marley is pretty sick, too, he's sort of a hybrid. Though it should be noted that rap is a reggae derivative. "Toasting" is Damian's specialty, and that is reggae's "rap."

I agree on Damian Marley, Confrontation is one of my favorite songs but Jamrock was overplayed in the clubs and therefore ruined for me. I personally think Immortal Technique has no flow whatsoever and is way too political, but I know I'm in the minority on that one.

It's been years since I've listened to Hip Hop on a regular basis, but I'll probably be checking out Dre's Detox whenever it drops. Rap may not be my thing but I'm always down for some classic Soul/Funk/R&B. I listen to plenty of white folks music too. :cool:

I won't say his flow is "bad" but it certainly isn't usually traditionally "good," either. But he's unique. I like his voice. That's very important in rap. You can't really change your voice and he doesn't sound generic. As for him being political, well, that's why I like him. Dance with The Devil is pretty sick and not overtly political. He does it well and he has a lot of interesting things to say. The beats he uses I like also.

And Confrontation is great! I love Jamrock still, but I only recently got into him and I never go to clubs. I found out about him since he was on a Cypress Hill track, haha.

Yep, Outkast. That's a big miss. And Lil Wayne's Tha Carter 3 really surprised me. I always liked his flow back in the day with the Hot Boys, etc. But the subject matter, music, and the other rappers turned me off. But his latest (he hasn't released that rock album yet has he?) album is spectacular. What he does with his voice...That's fuckin' New Orleans right there.

Thanks for the tip reece, I'll check those out. This is what I meant, music has such worldwide variety now thanks to ipods and the internet that you can find out about so much obscure but good stuff but not without the help of a recommendation.

And guitars are fine, as long as they are played in a certain style.

Digable Planets is great. I didn't like them at first. But once you're hooked...

Street Sweeper Social Club. Tom Morello plays guitar and bass. Boots Riley (from The Coup) is the vocalist. Stanton Moore (from Galactic, see post #7) on drums. Can't be classified solely as hip hop but elements are undeniable.

He came out with the rock album and even with me intentionally trying to be biased toward it I just couldn't like it. It is not good. It is horribly corny and not good as either rap or rock. It's just bad. It's cool what he was trying to do and was able to do something different, but it isn't really that different from things that already existed. Just different from what he did. You're not missing much.

Tha Carter III is insanely good though.

Yeah, I was worried about that, but much props for the effort. That took balls. I still have to hear it 'cause I've been known to like things others don't. But, my instincts are what you describe so I'm not expecting much.

It's funny how small the world is. He and I are from the same neighborhood but he is 11 years younger and I was definitely not into the lifestyle he was (Momma woulda killed me for sure) so our paths never crossed. So, I guess it's a big world too.

He recorded it from prison over a phone and the shitty sound quality adds to the song. Great song when you're cruising and smoking, especially if you have a system in your cherry red '67 Cadillac Fleetwood like I do. Gotta be careful what neighborhoods you go into while smoking in that car though, cops have used profiling and pulled me over so many times thinking I'm black and then they make up some bs usually about how a car matching my description was just stolen or something and they let me go.

Also this song is so great if you haven't heard it. Smoking outside with some friends on a spring/early summer afternoon in the sun and listening to this track is soooooo nice.

Blue Scholars and Macklemore are both part of the underground Seattle hip hop scene and are extremely good.

Lol Brother Ali isn't white. He's an albino african-american.

Incorrect. He does have albinism, but he is white. Here's a bit from his wikipedia page:

"Brother Ali was born with a rare genetic condition of Albinism, and his body cannot produce normal levels of pigmentation.

While Brother Alis family is white, he has often described a childhood marked by cruelty and exclusion by his white classmates as a result of his obesity. Hes often explained that, from an early age, he felt most at home amongst black people."

Having seen him at a show up close, I can confirm that he is, in fact, white-albino (despite the lack of pigment, it's usually possible to distinguish between black and white albinos.)

Still, glad you've heard of him. And lord knows it's an understandable mistake to think he's black considering his delivery, which I would say sounds more like Jay-Z than anyone else...

While we're talking about foreign rap (great idea!) I wanted to share this Israeli group, Hadag Nachash (which means 'the fish snake' literally, but it's really just a pun on 'Nahag Chadash,' which means 'New driver' and is a sign that Israeli kids have to put in their cars when they first get a license.)
