A while back ago i decided to get a nalgene vac chamber. This time I noticed on the manifold hoses that theyexpose to lead. It also lead me to believe that the bho was purged being that the wax was pulled at -1 or very close to it and done expanding like marshmallow. This resulted in a taffy consistency that I decided to Dab Inhaling butane still present and causing illness. I am beginning to believe a nice digital hotplate would have been a wiser investment. Or maybe a better manifold? Does vaccuming do anything or is heat purely the best way to purge? Comments Please

-1 hg is not a very strong vacuum, ideally you would want to be able to pull at least -15hgs of vacuum.

Its 30psi -1 bar on this manifold

im not too familiar with PSI, only inches of vacuum measured in hg's, so i have no idea what that means. a better question would be what kind of pump setup are you using? ideally you should be pulling the vacuum while your oil is in a molten, almost liquidy state to ensure the escape of butane. most people pull and release a vacuum multiple times, ensuring that the oil has collapsed after the seal has been broken, and even razing it with a torch inbetween vacs.

if you feel a vac is unnecessary, then you definitely do not have a proper vacuum setup or are not using it properly.

Don't think of it as an either/or situation. The best solution is low heat + vacuum purging. If you warm your oil to between 100f - 150f and then immediately vacuum purge the oil while it's warm, you'll get all the butane out.

What Vacuum purging has the potential to do, is to remove the butane using less heat. The hotter you get your oil, the more you risk releasing other compounds (terpenes) in the oil that most people consider beneficial.

There is a great Vacuum Pump thread over at TC that I would highly recommend reading if you want to get your vacuum purging technique down.

a 6CFM single stage should be fine for your intended purposes, keep in mind that a vac should be putting the finishing touches on your purge tech, not used to get the majority of the tane out. i would double boil your oil on a low heat, perhaps 140-170F, though others prefer different temps, until nearly all the bubbles have popped, you can also accelerate this process by lightly razing with a torch. after that, i would either turn up the heat a bit to get your oil into a gooey consistency (oven works too) then vac immediately. repeat the vac step (make sure your oil is viscous enough when going in!) as many times as you see fit.

i use vector simply because it is the only 5x refined butane that is easily accessible around here. i mostly do smaller batches, so price is not an issue to me.

I think vector might be overall a cleaner butane than power maybe theres a reason why it costs about 3 times as much. However, from what I've read most people who have tried side by side have not noticed any difference. Vector has a MSDS and website available while power does not although I don't believe a ppm is listed (I could be wrong). Does ppm make a difference? I've read Vector is made in Korea and so is Power some claim they are made in the same refinery. I did buy a half gram of BHO made with vector months back and from what I recall it seemed very clean so maybe I'll give it a try again. Extractionexperts.com sells power with their extractors which is what I use usually. On another note, the strain I use will budder on a low heat double boil with alot of whipping/stirring. After that is the best time to throw it in the vac if you want IMO. no need to turn the vac on and off because it doesn't move at full pull... the butane is gone already. Also no need to scrape with this technique unless you need every last bit (small runs).

Many people speak about CFM for vacuum pump, but CFM means the speed to have proper vacuum, not the power of the vacuum. The power of the vacuum is Pa (I have a pump 1.1CFM 5Pa).
    Is it right ?

Personally I don't use a vacuum even though I have one, a nice 500$ one, I don't use it for my particular runs that are always constant( as in the same material ) because I've found it unnecessary for purging in my particular case using the methods that I do. I keep my vacuum just for purging garbage oil I may buy from someone who did a run without knowing what their doing. So many times I've had to do what I call re-cooking where I'll stick the material on a nonstick pad in the chamber in a hot water bath on the stove at 115 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit for about an hour or more, and sometimes I even go as far as re diluting the oil in butane, so that my processes can be applied to achieve my desired consistency and proper purging. Consistency has 100% to do with the process that it was purged. Once your process is perfected, so will be your product.

Just to raise a point, one reason people mess up vacuuming still is because of a misunderstanding about what exactly is going on. When you activate the vacuum pump and create a vacuum in a chamber, that environment is now ( at least in theory ) air tight, and thus unable to allow any air in or out. This creates an environment where only X amount of butane ( the goal element your attempting to remove ) it's able to leave that environment, where X can only represent the amount of butane mixed with the air being sucked out while the pump is running. So now, when you shut off the pump, no more butane is able to leave the environment, it will expel fromthe oil still at whatever rate, but since it can't go anywhere other then in your chamber, odds are very good, due to the sticky nature of the oil, that some, obviously not all, is capable of rebinding. For this reason, many people constantly drain and revacuum the environment, to allow for a recycling of the air within the chamber itself, thus allowing a majority of the available butane in the environment to be cycled out, greatly reducing the chance for butane to be available in the final product.
