best way to store batteries?

i'm taking a little break..
so was just wondering how do you guys store your batteries?
i'm afraid to ruin them so now they are just laying around,
some fully charged, some not..
i don't have a volt meter and read that they need to be at some charged level to be stored properly?
also, where? in the fridge? room temp?

IIRC it is 40-60% charge, cool dry place.

I do have a follow up question. What if you've stored your batteries at 100% and then come back to them after not using them for a few weeks: Best to charge or discharge prior to use?

that's why i asked,
because i read you suppose to store them NOT fully charged. only about 1/3, or something like that.
