I always start my reviews off with some information about the company and where the product is made. The company is Zephyr Vaporizers out of Tarzana, CA.

Durability/Claims
The Zephyr Ion vaporizer comes with a 2 year warranty, but in reality I feel the way Zephyr believes in its product and the way it works that if you did have an issue down the road they would quickly solve the problem even if its after the warranty date.

The only downfall which is just a bad "stereotype", is that the vaporizer is made in China. Vaporizers are manufactured in China to save on labor costs and costs of circuitry and other small parts. When I found out the Zephyr was made in China with a price tag of $360 I was a little perturbed, but Zephyr explained the manufacturing plant is ran by Zephyr not out-sourced, to help insure quality control, safety and by the look of things on the Zephyr digital vaporizer itself it was designed with quality in mind. If it was made in the USA the cost of the herbal vaporizer would be closer to $500 MSRP instead of $360.

Since its soo new we are even on a waiting list for them to come in; there is no actual experience about handling warranty claims but I have talked to the guys of Zephyr a bunch and they really are good with replying to emails and returning voice mails something many other already established named companies are not good at it.

Automatic shut off will help save the life of the heating element... No more going to bed to find out that the next morning you left your vaporizer on all night at 360+ degrees.

Design/Ease of Use
The solid construction of the vaporizer gives the Zephyr a sturdy feel and will make you feel better about spending $360 on a vaporizer. If it weighed nothing you would think it wasnt made well, with the added tough construction it won't tip over easily and risk breaking the straw. The actual visual appeal of the Zephyr is a mix between a digital appliance from your kitchen and something Craftsman tools would design both because of its shape and texture. It reminds me of shoulders and half a face of a robot.

The buttons on the control panel are super easy to see, read and use; great job on Zephyr's part on the ease of use when it comes to working the vaporizer. There is no heat indicator light but instead you get a night-light style LED screen, when its at its desired temperature it will turn green Green; means go vape and Red means wait another 30 seconds, because it heats up soo fast you probably only have 30 seconds left of waiting at any temperature point. The Zephyr's screen will stay red whether it's on or not something that would be a little annoying if it was in your bedroom at night. The Zephyr heats up lightning fast if you keep the lid closed though they suggest you open it between sessions and when not in use. Even then its still one of the fastest heat up times on the market.

The filling chamber basket works well and is efficient but it's kind of big. But I also feel the same way about the Volcano's filling chambers they are both tough vaporizers for single use for one or two persons. A normal amount of your herb just looks ineffective maybe forcing you to using more herb than need to be efficiency is key when it comes to choosing a top rated vaporizer.

The valve and mouthpiece are both one unit. You could kind of compare it to the Easy Valve on the Volcano except the mouthpiece tip is detachable with the Easy Valve. The Valve clamp opens by squeezing the valve and to be honest its a tough, it might get easier with more use but I think it's so when you secure the valve onto the straw [see pic below] to help seal it better. If youre an older aged person or have arthritis in your hands it might be a two hand open and close valve. There is a noticeable amount of leakage from the top of the valve where the balloon attaches only when you're filling up the bag and especially when its the first bag and the vapor is thick and visual. The leakage is not coming from the valve, stem, or lid but the way the actual bag is fastened onto the valve with a zip tie.

The balloon the Zephyr vaporizer uses is the standard oven hose material you would find with the Volcano and Extreme vaporizers. Figure a life span of 1-2 months maybe even less depending on how often you use it now here's the issue we were having about the leaking. Changing the balloon is a tad on the un-easy side due to the tiny push pin that you would find on an electronic sensor on your car. Push in the "pen tip sized" tab and lift the top part up. Thats the cover that keeps the valve clean looking compared to just seeing the end of the balloon zip tied to the valve and then trimmed around the edges. We have used other vaporizers that try to use a zip tie to hold vapor and it will never be completely air tight. Is it a major problem? No, but maybe a better o-ring or something will eventually come out.

Aromatherapy
For those of you who enjoy herbal aromatherapy; lavender, chamomile, damiana etc, then your in a for a treat. The unit works well through both inhalation methods but also if you leave the straw into the atmosphere you can make any room "aroma-tized" in few a seconds. We have been leaving it on here at the office with Damiana (a relaxing herb) and the Zephyr works really well like this as well, a selling point for massage therapist, yoga and Pilates instructors and anyone else in the business of relaxing yourself or your clientele.

Taste
The taste and effectiveness of your vapor is exactly the same as the Volcano vaporizer. Super clean tasting what your herb smells like is what you taste. Every time you fill a bag its the same consistency and same effectiveness. Be prepared of the strength it will extract from your herb just another great quality factor in this vaporizer.

USB Device
As shown at Champs show there is a USB cable included and plug on the Zephyr Vaporizer. As of right now the software only works with Windows XP so I couldnt set it up and use it but for demonstration purposes I'm told that you can set a time for it to turn on and to what temperature. Very cool if it works with different operating systems but I feel the unit heats up soo fast that there is no need to worry about it turning on 15 minutes before you get home. But a cool feature on an overall cool vape.

Direct Inhalation Method with Whip
Per request from many members we wanted to use it with a whip Zephyr Ion says they are coming out with a nice whip with valve and mouthpiece but for now I used a SSV quality silicon whip and an SSV mouthpiece (something we will include with your order until Zephyr produces there own). Because the herb basket is completely air sealed under the lid you could use it with or without the fan. Without the fan the whip works really well and is great for single use compared to having to fill up a full bag. With the fan it works just as well and takes the inhale method out of the whip style but probably is more wasteful than direct inhalation without the fan. It also gives the Zephyr extra value compared to being a balloon vaporizer.

Summary
In Summary, the Zephyr vaporizer is a digital balloon style vaporizer with a retail price of $360. It comes with a 2 year warranty and a crew of people at Zephyr who really believe in their vaporizer. The Zephyr is a solid feeling sturdy vaporizer with a super easy valve design though it comes with a kung fu grip valve clamp. The vapor taste is on par with much more expensive vaporizers with a great consistency and true to herbal blend flavor. The few cons it has, made in China, tough to open valve and small leak are not enough to change your mind compared to the amount of pros it provides for its price point in the growing vaporizer market

Edit: Just updated a few minor details - company name is: Zephyr Vaporizers and the unit itself is called Zephyr Ion. I also compared the one piece design of the Valve/Mouthpiece of the Zephyr to the Easy Valve of the Volcano. When the Easy Valve on the Volcano is actually 2 pieces because of the mouthpiece tip.

Thank you for the review and I really appreciate the part about older people and those who may have issues with the bag as well as the whip part.

I'll try and word this the best I can, does the area under the lid fill up with vapor or does the white plastic piece seal directly over the bowl when you close the lid?
The reason I ask is imagine it would be a pain to clean the resin build up if it all fills up with vapor, its not like you can soak it like Volcano chamber.

Does the silver panel on the front look as cheap in person as it does in the video? I think they would have been better off going with a faceplate like the Aromed or Volcano.

Under the lid the white ceramic piece completely seals off from leaking (thats why it works so well with a whip too)

A face plate wouldve been nice but would increase costs Im sure as well. We had mixed opinions on the silver panel/led screen. Some here at the office liked the simplicity of it and for anyone who cant see well you wouldnt have a problem with this unit. I feel like if your okay with the overall look of the unit than you wont have a problem with the front panel in person.

For the price and how it works you are getting a great vape. You can look at an Extreme who does both direct inhale and balloons but its nowhere near as easy to use and tons of glass that can break and that retails for $299. Herbal Aire is $249 and needs an external air pump to fill up balloons and no digital display.

Thats good that it seals, I'm sure you could imagine the cleaning nightmare if the vapor filled in the area under the lid.

Though I wish it was made in the USA the price is not bad and looks to be a better value than the Extreme, which I thought to be well made until I saw one in person and found out that it uses a computer fan instead of a diaphragm pump like the Volcano. I read somewhere that they use the same pump as the Volcano which is a good thing.

Oh and when I said faceplate I meant the brushed aluminum looking thing that is already on there, I just thought it would look better with a polycarbonate (lexan) faceplate with some color to make it look more modern like they did with the Volcano Digit, that is just me being picky, it wouldn't cost them anymore for that.

We wanted to let everyone know that we are also now carrying the Zephyr Ion for $359.99. From our tests we've concluded that it's a very good model, high quality components, pure vapor, easy to use. It's nice to see some new, more advanced bag fill vaporizers hit the market:

If anyone has any questions about the Ion, just let us know and we'll be happy to answer them.

Just read a report at another site from someone who just got one and he stated that his unit had vapor leaks. Just a heads up. Could be user error, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

You need to make sure the seal under the lid is sitting correctly. Its a flimsy o-ring that easily comes out of place and causes it to leak from under the lid while using it with the fan.

If its leaking from the valve its becuase of the zip tie holding the bag to the valve is not tight enough.

Here is the new video on youtube showing the leakage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uze-7C-rQhI
Maybe this is just a defective unit since the other videos show no leakage.

I can't tell where the vapor is leaking from. Can anyone see?

If it is just leaking at the connection of the bag valve and the white straw it doesn't seem like it would be a big deal, but if it is leaking from the lid that means vapor is filling the entire area under the lid which would make this machine hard to clean. In that case you would have to use handfulls of alcohol soaked Qtips intead of just soaking the whole filling chamber like you can with the Volcano.

Edit: After reading the above review again I have answered my own quesiton.

With the O-ring under the lid we found that on some units the screen under the lid that goes over the basket was not pushed in all the way up into the straw during assembly. This means there is not enough room for the height of the O-ring and it pops out. We solved this problem on all the units we've encountered it on by taking the O-ring out, pushing in around the edge of the screen with our fingernails, and then fitting the O-ring back in and firmly pushing it up as far as it will go. This should solve all leakage issues from under the lid.

I picked up one for $235 a few days ago. Yeah, the little bit of leak is a drawback. But other than that, I've got zero complaints - in fact, it's easier to use than my volcano in most ways. Still cloudy on the exact materials used in the unit however...

The Extreme is made in China too but everyone seems to think it is made in Canada. I bet the Herbal Aire is also made in China because if you look on their website they say nothing about where it is made, only some of the distributers claim it is made in Canada.

$235 is a price I can get down with, where's this deal at? $360 is too high, I just don't see myself paying an extra hundo over the herbal aire for a digital temp. I've been craving a bag vape for some time, and I'm leaning towards the herbal aire over the extreme just because long term durability is important to me, and I think the HA wins in that category. This new ion almost tempted me away, but the combination of it being too new for any long term reliability testimony and costing the extra hundred...

Has anyone owned both the ion and the Herbalaire? I'd love to hear a comparison.

B. -- why you craving a bag vape...do you have a lot of group sessions? Looking at your vaporizer lineup, I'd get a PD or AZ and call it a day.

Bags are dope.

The herbalaire is kind of a bitch for bags though. 235 for this thing sounds like a deal if it's comparable to a volcano. That shit's in another league bagwise vs. herbalaire or extreme

How did your extreme die?

@blunt : I don't really know how my extreme broke, it just stopped heating up and started making a weird noise. It took a couple of tumbles off of my coffee table onto a carpeted floor, but never anything too bad. Arizer was totally willing to fix it, I just didn't like the idea of shipping it internationally considering my choice of materials used with it. As much as I loved it and wanted it fixed I couldn't bring myself to take that risk. Already owning a SSV made that an easier decision, that's for damn sure. If I had no backup vape, I may have taken the chance. Why are bags a bitch with the HA? I've read the stock pump is a bit slow/weak, but thats easily fixed.

@sticks : Oh, a PD or MZ is on my wishlist too, and probably before a proper bag vape. The vapir bag vape I have does work, but I know it's not on par with some of the other bag vapes, and sweet baby jesus is that fan annoying. Anyone who's been in the room with one on for more than a couple of minutes knows what I mean. I like bags sometimes just to mix it up. I'm also a big fan of trying to convert people to vaping, and for certain people who may not pick up the whip or LB technique quickly, I want to have a good bag vape around to give them a simple delivery. Most importantly, I like new toys :)

Also, as long as people keep making cool new vapes, I don't know if I can ever call it a day :p

Will the dispensary sell/ship me one if I live in chicago?

Ion sounds like a winner if you're after bag delivery.

How much personal use are you basing that statement on? I've used one for several years now and for me, it's far from being a "bitch for bags", no matter what you mean by that vague criticism.

My friend owns one and I've used it a lot. It's a bitch to get out the aquarium pump out and deal with all the tubing and shit. Compared to something like the volcano it's kind of a bitch. I'll gladly do it though.

There's more 'stuff' to it than with the Volcano, but having a separate pump that can replaced (or upgraded) with pretty much any inexpensive aquarium pump is an advantage as far as I'm concerned. There has to be a price to pay when you're saving $300. In this case it's slower bag fill and an external pump. On the plus side, it's a whole lot cheaper to have multiple/different sized bags ready to go with the herbalAire, vs. the 'cano.

Why not look at the Extreme?, almost the same price + you get a great whip vape when using the elbow pack that you can hit hard. With friends over you can both pack the elbow and the bowl and really overwhelm your friends, the vapor just keeps coming K.O. I've had my Extreme a long time and it never fails to get me really fucked up. Parts are cheap too, get extra bowls and elbows and have them pre loaded ready to go for party time.

while i did look at the extreme, its not for me. i want a vape that does its intended purpose well. i feel that a multifunction vape, like the extreme, cant do the all the jobs as well as say a designated whip vape, and a designated bag vape. this is just personal preferance though. and i also dont like the idea of having to 'modify' the operation of the vape with using the elbow pack method vrs using the standard bowl. and for close to the same price, i also feel i dont need 2 differant whipbased vapes. i feel the one i will be purchacing next month will be more then good enough in that department. thank you for the suggestion though.
